The Slavonic Dances are a series of 16 orchestral pieces composed by AntonÃn Dvořák in 1878 and 1886 and published in two sets as Op. 46 and Op. 72 respectively. Originally written for piano four hands, the Slavonic Dances were inspired by Johannes Brahms's own Hungarian Dances and were orchestrated at the request of Dvořák's publisher soon after composition. The pieces, lively and full of national character, were well received at the time and today are considered among the composer's most memorable works, occasionally making appearances in popular culture. In this arrangement for sax choir (Eb Sopranino, Bb Soprano 1-2, Eb Alto 1-2-3, Bb Tenor 1-2-3, Eb Baritone 1-2, Bb Bass) we have the Slavonic Dance No. 8 (Op. 46): Furiant.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was a German composer who crafted his works using the techniques of musical counterpoint within traditional forms. Within those strictures he created many beautiful and powerful works. This Intermezzo was published in 1893, the last set of pieces that he composed for piano. It was given as a birthday present to Clara Schumann (a famous piano virtuoso in the 19th century). Brahms admitted to writing these just for himself, casting them with an introverted and somewhat melancholic tone. This is an arrangement by Richard Byrnes for 2 Soprano Saxes, 3 Alto Saxes, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, & Contrabassoon. In Salt Lake City, it has been performed every year since 1963. The New York City Ballet gave its first annual performance in 1954. It is an orchestral work comprising fourteen variations on an original theme. Nimrod (Adagio) was the 9th variation. The name of this variation refers to Augustus J. Jaeger, who was employed as a music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar's, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks.
