Ancient Airs (2004) for solo flute was written for and is dedicated to flutist Sandra Ragusa.It is in two movements, each with a spirit of ancient airs re-imagined in a modern context.The ancestry of the modern flute as a folk instrument is the inspiration for the work's concept.They should always be played with a lyrical, singing approach.Beyond the Mountain uses as its basic musical material a simple transformation of a modalmelody in D minor. Gradually tones are added borrowed from other modalities. The openingsection is slow and lyrical. The middle section is more active -- contrasting the D minorchord tones with the added diminished tones of the first section. The final section recalls thematerial of the opening with a wider transformation.Forgotten Incantation uses a wider modal language than the first movement. Although stillgenerally slow and song-like, it is more energetic. Energetic gestures interrupt and drive thesong narrative forwards.

The work was written in memory of American composer Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) – a composerwhose music, advocacy, and personal support meant a great deal to me over the years I knew him.Throughout his distinguished career as a composer, keyboard performer (on harpsichord and organ),teacher, and conductor, Dan Pinkham served as an inspiration for countless American composers andmusicians.I had planned to write a solo flute sonata for a few years and made many sketches towards such a work. Inearly 2007, reflecting on Dan’s passing in December 2006, I threw out everything I already had and begananew, conceiving the work both as a tribute to Dan and a piece for his close friend and frequentcollaborator Fenwick Smith.The five movements of the work each explore ongoing transformation of their opening materials. Thoughthere are elegiac moments in the work, the tone throughout is zestfully celebratory, with touches of humor,representing Pinkham’s irrepressible and memorable wit.The first movement, Caprice, flies through a series of arpeggio figurations in changing modes (often adifferent mode “going up†from “coming downâ€).The second movement, Folk Arabesques, is based on a Kentucky folk ballad, “John Riley.†The unusual leapsin the original melody and its modal shifts are explored in the surrounding commentaries, which takecombine bits of the folk ballad with arabesque figurations.The third movement, March, leaps through the total chromatic spectrum. Though the march is a form oftenignored by American composers, Pinkham often employed such sections and rhythms in his own music.The fourth movement, Aria and Interludes, uses a common Pinkham form—where the basic musicaldialogue (in this case a straightforward ‘aria’ melody in G minor) is interrupted by “interludes†ofcontrasting nature. In the case of this movement, it is gradually revealed that the interludes are alteredversions of the aria material.The fifth and final movement, Hootenanny at the Gates of Heaven, is a joyous romp, combining together boththe chromatic/modal shifts of the earlier movements with pentatonic figurations and melodies in the spiritof American folk fiddling.

Due to health problems, however, he had to end his career as a violin virtuoso prematurely. He subsequently made a name for himself as a composer and conductor. In 1923 he composed six solo sonatas, including Obsession, which have a high status in violin literature.The name of this second sonata could come from Ysaÿe's obsessive preoccupation with Johann Sebastian Bach. The sonata begins with the unmistakable sequence of tones of the Prelude from the Partita in E major, BWV 1006. Abruptly, almost as a shock, this theme is replaced by the ancient Dies Irae sequence from the Mass for the Dead.I adapted the first movement of Obsession, which has no double stops, for the flute. The arrangement was first played publicly on October 19, 2014 in the Giacometti Hall, Zurich, and was subsequently published on YouTube.

This unaccompanied flute solo is all about freedom, including freedom meter, key and tempo. The work also utilizes many contemporary techniques, such as wind tones to recreate the effect of a breeze softly blowing across a flute embouchure hole. The piece develops in such a way to mirror the way our own mind develops and grows upon ideas, especially in moments of meditation. **The sample recording for this piece was performed by Barry Griffiths.---------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

I was thinking about all the ways in which we could not breathe in 2020 - George Floyd's last words, the COVID-19 pandemic putting us all on masks and respirators, the wildfires filling our homes with smoke, the racism that has silenced so many for so long. I thought it would be interesting to write a piece with all that in mind for flute, an instrument which is, of course, all about breathing.  The piece is one movement with four sections: George Floyd, Protests, Respirators, and Wildfires. It runs approximately 9 to 10 minutes, at the performer’s discretion. It requires some improvisation, a few special effects (multiphonics, use of voice, jet whistle), some serious breath control, and a lot of energy. The performer is asked to breathe in specific ways, to make the audience aware of the breathing, and to become uncomfortably short of breath.  There is also optional use of electronic Loop for layering voices in the final section.This piece was premiered by Anthony Trionfo at the National Flute Association convention, Aug. 4, 2023. Check out the Youtube link for an exciting performance.This is an intensely emotional piece and unlike my other compositions. SeptemberHelsinki). He was one of the best known authors in Finland and his works were translated into 30 languages. 1908 in Helsinki, †26. August 1979 also in This is the story of the adventures of the doctor SinuheCrete and other regions of the known world at that time. who lived from 1390 to1335 B.C. who was initially the personal physician at the court of the Pharaoh Akhenaten before subsequently visiting Babylon, Waltari was inspired by the Ancient Egyptian text The Story of Sinuhe which is considered to be one of the earliest literary works (20th century B.C.). The author additionally undertook comprehensive historical studies, and the novel with its extensive cultural history and customs of the Orient in pre-Christian times became a worldwide success. The novel also gained recognition among Egyptologists. Sinuhe the Egyptian was in turn an inspiration for the composer Olli Mustonen to create a work for the “archaic†instrument the oboe. The original version of this two-movement piece additionally fulfilled the composer’s wish to dedicate a composition to his wife Sole who is also an oboist.The current version for flute was written for the Danish flutist Janne Thomsen.Der 1945 erschienene finnische Roman Sinuhe der Ägypter schildert das abenteuerliche Leben des Leibarztes von Pharao Echnaton. Das bedeutende literarische Werk inspirierte Olli Mustonen, ein Stück für das „archaische Instrument Oboe zu schreiben. Die Originalfassung dieser zweisätzigen Komposition widmete er seiner Frau Sole, die selbst Oboe spielt. Die vorliegende Fassung für Flöte schrieb Mustonen für die dänische Flötistin Janne Thomsen.
