I was thinking about all the ways in which we could not breathe in 2020 - George Floyd's last words, the COVID-19 pandemic putting us all on masks and respirators, the wildfires filling our homes with smoke, the racism that has silenced so many for so long. I thought it would be interesting to write a piece with all that in mind for flute, an instrument which is, of course, all about breathing.  The piece is one movement with four sections: George Floyd, Protests, Respirators, and Wildfires. It runs approximately 9 to 10 minutes, at the performer’s discretion. It requires some improvisation, a few special effects (multiphonics, use of voice, jet whistle), some serious breath control, and a lot of energy. The performer is asked to breathe in specific ways, to make the audience aware of the breathing, and to become uncomfortably short of breath.  There is also optional use of electronic Loop for layering voices in the final section.This piece was premiered by Anthony Trionfo at the National Flute Association convention, Aug. 4, 2023. Check out the Youtube link for an exciting performance.This is an intensely emotional piece and unlike my other compositions. The work was written in memory of American composer Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) – a composerwhose music, advocacy, and personal support meant a great deal to me over the years I knew him.Throughout his distinguished career as a composer, keyboard performer (on harpsichord and organ),teacher, and conductor, Dan Pinkham served as an inspiration for countless American composers andmusicians.I had planned to write a solo flute sonata for a few years and made many sketches towards such a work. Inearly 2007, reflecting on Dan’s passing in December 2006, I threw out everything I already had and begananew, conceiving the work both as a tribute to Dan and a piece for his close friend and frequentcollaborator Fenwick Smith.The five movements of the work each explore ongoing transformation of their opening materials. Thoughthere are elegiac moments in the work, the tone throughout is zestfully celebratory, with touches of humor,representing Pinkham’s irrepressible and memorable wit.The first movement, Caprice, flies through a series of arpeggio figurations in changing modes (often adifferent mode “going up†from “coming downâ€).The second movement, Folk Arabesques, is based on a Kentucky folk ballad, “John Riley.†The unusual leapsin the original melody and its modal shifts are explored in the surrounding commentaries, which takecombine bits of the folk ballad with arabesque figurations.The third movement, March, leaps through the total chromatic spectrum. Though the march is a form oftenignored by American composers, Pinkham often employed such sections and rhythms in his own music.The fourth movement, Aria and Interludes, uses a common Pinkham form—where the basic musicaldialogue (in this case a straightforward ‘aria’ melody in G minor) is interrupted by “interludes†ofcontrasting nature. In the case of this movement, it is gradually revealed that the interludes are alteredversions of the aria material.The fifth and final movement, Hootenanny at the Gates of Heaven, is a joyous romp, combining together boththe chromatic/modal shifts of the earlier movements with pentatonic figurations and melodies in the spiritof American folk fiddling.

SeptemberHelsinki). He was one of the best known authors in Finland and his works were translated into 30 languages. 1908 in Helsinki, †26. August 1979 also in This is the story of the adventures of the doctor SinuheCrete and other regions of the known world at that time. who lived from 1390 to1335 B.C. who was initially the personal physician at the court of the Pharaoh Akhenaten before subsequently visiting Babylon, Waltari was inspired by the Ancient Egyptian text The Story of Sinuhe which is considered to be one of the earliest literary works (20th century B.C.). The author additionally undertook comprehensive historical studies, and the novel with its extensive cultural history and customs of the Orient in pre-Christian times became a worldwide success. The novel also gained recognition among Egyptologists. Sinuhe the Egyptian was in turn an inspiration for the composer Olli Mustonen to create a work for the “archaic†instrument the oboe. The original version of this two-movement piece additionally fulfilled the composer’s wish to dedicate a composition to his wife Sole who is also an oboist.The current version for flute was written for the Danish flutist Janne Thomsen.Der 1945 erschienene finnische Roman Sinuhe der Ägypter schildert das abenteuerliche Leben des Leibarztes von Pharao Echnaton. Ancient Airs (2004) for solo flute was written for and is dedicated to flutist Sandra Ragusa.It is in two movements, each with a spirit of ancient airs re-imagined in a modern context.The ancestry of the modern flute as a folk instrument is the inspiration for the work's concept.They should always be played with a lyrical, singing approach.Beyond the Mountain uses as its basic musical material a simple transformation of a modalmelody in D minor. Gradually tones are added borrowed from other modalities. The openingsection is slow and lyrical. The middle section is more active -- contrasting the D minorchord tones with the added diminished tones of the first section. The final section recalls thematerial of the opening with a wider transformation.Forgotten Incantation uses a wider modal language than the first movement. Although stillgenerally slow and song-like, it is more energetic. Energetic gestures interrupt and drive thesong narrative forwards.

The sonata begins with the unmistakable sequence of tones of the Prelude from the Partita in E major, BWV 1006. Abruptly, almost as a shock, this theme is replaced by the ancient Dies Irae sequence from the Mass for the Dead.I adapted the first movement of Obsession, which has no double stops, for the flute. Struggling to find a jumping off point, I turned to the internet in hopes for a spark, and instead ended up on Reddit looking at the daily viral internet. For unknown reasons, this was the inspiration I needed, and I turned to old school memes, and decided to write a collection of short character pieces based on the origin of some of my favorites. Success Kid is based upon the internet’s favorite fist-pumping toddler. I imagined my nephew, Georgie when he was three, and once stayed in continuous movement for nearly ten hours. I was exhausted watching him, and his frenetic energy is the driving inspiration. The performer is instructed to play this just “within control,†meaning that one click faster on the metronome could bring it to a crashing halt. Annoyed Picard is based upon a single screenshot of the syndicated classic Star Trek: The Next Generation. Although this meme is shows frustration, the shot in questions is actually famed Shakespearean actor, Patrick Stewart, quoting Shakespeare in a vain attempt to woo one of his crewmates away from an evil alien species. I thought it only fitting to write a simple melodic melody, fitting for the words of Shakespeare, that slowly morphs into an exciting sci-fi riff. This is fine is based on the single panel that is synonymous with the worst possible situations. A dog drinks tea in a room slowly filling with flames. The truth is that all isn’t well, and in the final three panels of the comic strip, the room slowly is engulfed in flames and the dog melts. I wanted to show the chaos and destruction of this comic strip by taking the same melody and distorting it past the point of comfort. Of course, the movement has to end with the joke of the meme. (Sing along the words “This is fine.â€) -.

Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as a M.M. and Bch.Sc. from Ball State University.
