Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018933). Fugue: Wear Pearls and Smile is, on the outset, a fast, rambunctious adventure for many voices playing at the same time. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings , with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Settings vary from lyrical to marcato and tempos range from adagio to allegro. Using serial twelve-tone technique, each study's tone row is used only in original and retrograde (reversed) forms. Interval review in the studies begins with seconds and gradually expands to focus on thirds, fourths, tritones, fifths, sixths and sevenths. While 14 different time signatures are presented, beat subdivisions are not complex to facilitate precise rhythmic execution. Initially I wanted to write musical etudes or exercises that would improve my own playing but, as more and more ideas came together, it gradually became its own interesting piece requiring different styles and techniques that I thought others might enjoy playing. There are elements of music in these three miniatures that may come easy, but are intertwined with later challenges to keep the player’s interest. The Be-Bop Range Book is a creative approach to developing range, technique and improvisational be-bop skills for trumpet.IntroductionTrumpet range and developing it is one of the most common and controversial subjects among trumpet players, teachers and authors. Without delving too far into the physical and scientific aspects of trumpet playing, allow me to paraphrase the great Yogi Berra;The upper register of the trumpet is the same as the middle and lower registers, just different.All trumpet playing is a coordination or balance of three things: air, tongue level and embouchure. It is through sensible, intelligent and consistent practice that we develop the skills necessary to play throughout the entire range of our instrument.Purpose Of This BookAlthough hitting the high note may be the quest for many trumpet players, a more useful and musical goal is developing a large playable range. This means being able to articulate and play musically and dynamically throughout the entire range of the instrument. This is accomplished through the use of Range Arcs, which are musical phrases that cover a large range. In addition to building our playable range, we are working on technique and adding to our jazz vocabulary.I originally developed the concept of Range Arcs in The Modern Jazz Trumpet Method. Many players have commented on how useful these studies are, so I decided to expand on it here. For more rudimentary range, flexibility and endurance study, seeTongue Level & Air.The Approach NoteI have found that how we approach the highest note of a musical phrase is critical to range development. This aspect of range development is presented here in a progressive, creative format.Exercises 1-5 use the Chromatic Approach. This means that the highest note of the arc is approached from a 1â„2 step below. The exercises continue, adding a 1â„2 step to the approach note every five exercises.Articulation & PhrasingAll exercises in this book are to be played in a swing style. However, if you are having trouble with an exercise, sometimes playing it straight may help. Jazz articulation should also be employed throughout. What does that mean exactly? Jazz trumpet articulation is as spontaneous and individual as an improvised solo. Honestly, if I have to think about it, I can’t do it. The best advice is to listen to the trumpet players quoted in this book and to as much jazz trumpet as you can. Transcribe and play solos while emulating their style and articulation.Immersing yourself in this will result in your own personal style of articulation. Jazz articulation on trumpet is also born out of necessity. Some slurs in a line may just not be possible so you must tongue. This will be revealed when you start some of the exercises that contain wider intervals.How To Use This BookEach exercise group consists of a Range Arc, Range Builder and Range Builder Extended. Each group should be practiced for at least one week before moving ahead to the next one.Range ArcsThe Range Arc is the original lick. Many of these have been borrowed from some of the great jazz trumpeters of all time; Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Chet Baker, Tom Harrell, Randy Brecker, Fats Navarro and Blue Mitchell.You should begin with the key that is marked with an asterisk * ; it is an easy key and range and will help you familiarize yourself with the lick. Practice slowly at first and then work for speed. Once you are familiar with the * lick, start at the beginning of the Range Arc. Work on each key until you get it smoothly. Repeat as needed and rest between each key. Take the D.C. and play 8va through the indicated key (see the box at the end of the Range Arc) that takes you to High C. Rest for 15 minutes.Range BuildersAfter resting, you are ready for the Range Builder. These are short.

Newton Antiphonies (2008) for two or more trumpets was composed for the First Unitarian Society in Newton, Massachusetts on the occasion of its 160th anniversary in November 2008. The score of the work consists of seven cells, each with a different tempo. It is important that the distinct tempo and character of each cell be observed. Other than starting points (as described below), no rhythmic coordination between the performers should be attempted in any way. A performance should begin with the first trumpet playing cell #1. When he reaches the point in the cell marked with an asterisk (*), the second player begins playing cell #1. Once the first player has finished cell #1, after a brief pause, he may choose any one of the other six cells to play next. When the second player has reached the point in cell #1 marked by the asterisk, the third player begins cell #1, continuing after a pause to whichever cell he has chosen next. This thus continues in this same manner for each trumpet. Ideally, the piece will last between 2 and 5 minutes, although if there are an exceptionally large number of trumpets used, it may be longer. Each player thus always begins with cell #1 and after finishing it, plays the remaining cells in any order he chooses, not repeating any and pausing briefly between each one. Once finished with playing all seven, the player stops. When only one player (the last player) is left playing his final cell (and ideally at the point marked with the asterisk in whichever cell he is playing), the first trumpet should begin playing cell #7 again. Thus, the first player will always end the piece alone with cell #7, which is the only repetition of a cell that occurs in the context of performance. The composer recommends between 4 and 6 trumpets for an ideal performance, however any number (two or more) is acceptable. It is also strongly requested that the trumpets surround the audience antiphonally. The work may be performed on any matched trumpets (i.e., do not mix C and Bb instruments).

Trumpet Folk Fill in the Blank is a book of thirty folk songs and nursery rhymes. Each song is presented first in an easy key, like C, F or G. Then it is transposed to other keys and certain strategic notes are left out. Those notes are replaced by question marks. The students are to practice the first version of the song until they get the sound of the melody in their ears. After they master the first version, then they are ready to play the fill in the blank versions of the songs in other keys. We use a total of seven key signatures in this book, up to three flats and three sharps. Any student who knows their scales up to three flats and three sharps should have a lot of fun playing these fill in the blank songs. Benefits of playing the fill in the blank songs include ear training, finger technique, sight reading, phrasing and tone.

In 1853 Charles Czerny took this polka tune and created a piano etude as part of his set Amusement des Juenes Amateurs. I have taken some of his themes and adapted and arranged them for instrumental solo. I have assembled them into a Rondo form: Intro-A-B-A-C-A-D-A-Coda. It is an etude (study) to sharpen your playing of scales, arpeggios, melodic interval leaps, and various articulations. But it doesn't at all sound like an exercise because of the playful nature of the polka. This dramatic piece shows your technical accomplishments while delivering a crowd pleasing tune with great flourish.I have marked it as Intermediate in difficulty as a general average.
