Although published as a piano solo (1902), A Breeze from Alabama is subtitled March and Two Step and has a dedication on the cover to P. G. Lowery (Perry George Lowery, 1871-1942), World's Challenging Colored Cornetist and Band Master. Thus, A Breeze from Alabama may well have been conceived as a march for military band but published only as a piano solo. No band arrangement by Joplin is known to exist, but Joplin could have done this, as he himself was a cornetist as well as pianist, and had played cornet in bands like Lowery's many times. Drawing on this information, the present arrangement by James Siddons (2017) is based on the following assumptions: 1. A Breeze from Alabama originated as a march (in march-trio form) for military band. 2. The 1902 publication for piano solo by Scott Joplin is a piano reduction of that band work. The melodic lines intended for cornet solo are generally discernible in the piano reduction. 3. A setting for piano duet (or ensemble) keeps this work in the tradition of ragtime piano while also emulating the fulsome tone colors of brass instruments to a degree that a solo piano cannot do. Thus this arrangement is not a solo-and-accompaniment setting, but a setting for large ensemble with soloist. It is collaborative music, akin to a concerto. This is the part for cornet in Bb (or trumpet). A performance also requires the piano duet score (also playable as a piano ensemble), and the full score if a conductor participates. The audio track posted here has the piano music only, and is for rehearsal by the cornet soloist. A cadenza for the cornet, composed by James Siddons, begins at measure 116 in the score and part, and at 2 mins, 44 secs in the audio recording. In the audio track, five seconds of silence begin at 2 mins, 44 secs. To practice the cadenza, press the pause button on your media player. To rehearse without playing the cadenza, simply wait out the brief silence. At 2 mins, 49 secs, the piano music resumes at measure 120 of the score or cornet part.

It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings , with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Capriccio was originally written as a piece for unaccompanied clarinet in 1984 while I was a clarinet student at the University of North Carolina, School of the Arts in Winston Salem, NC under the tutelage of Robert Listokin. Bob Listokin was one of greatest individuals I’ve ever known. He taught me so much more than how to play the clarinet. His example of love, humility, and kindness has been a guiding force throughout my life. This little piece was written while I was little more than a child and one of the few compositions that I would risk publishing today. As I sat down to revise it, I was amazed at how it foreshadowed many of the defining characteristics of my current style. Without delving too far into the physical and scientific aspects of trumpet playing, allow me to paraphrase the great Yogi Berra;The upper register of the trumpet is the same as the middle and lower registers, just different.All trumpet playing is a coordination or balance of three things: air, tongue level and embouchure. It is through sensible, intelligent and consistent practice that we develop the skills necessary to play throughout the entire range of our instrument.Purpose Of This BookAlthough hitting the high note may be the quest for many trumpet players, a more useful and musical goal is developing a large playable range. This means being able to articulate and play musically and dynamically throughout the entire range of the instrument. This is accomplished through the use of Range Arcs, which are musical phrases that cover a large range. In addition to building our playable range, we are working on technique and adding to our jazz vocabulary.I originally developed the concept of Range Arcs in The Modern Jazz Trumpet Method. Many players have commented on how useful these studies are, so I decided to expand on it here. For more rudimentary range, flexibility and endurance study, seeTongue Level & Air.The Approach NoteI have found that how we approach the highest note of a musical phrase is critical to range development. This aspect of range development is presented here in a progressive, creative format.Exercises 1-5 use the Chromatic Approach. This means that the highest note of the arc is approached from a 1â„2 step below. The exercises continue, adding a 1â„2 step to the approach note every five exercises.Articulation & PhrasingAll exercises in this book are to be played in a swing style. However, if you are having trouble with an exercise, sometimes playing it straight may help. Jazz articulation should also be employed throughout. What does that mean exactly? Jazz trumpet articulation is as spontaneous and individual as an improvised solo. Honestly, if I have to think about it, I can’t do it. The best advice is to listen to the trumpet players quoted in this book and to as much jazz trumpet as you can. Transcribe and play solos while emulating their style and articulation.Immersing yourself in this will result in your own personal style of articulation. Jazz articulation on trumpet is also born out of necessity. Some slurs in a line may just not be possible so you must tongue. This will be revealed when you start some of the exercises that contain wider intervals.How To Use This BookEach exercise group consists of a Range Arc, Range Builder and Range Builder Extended. Each group should be practiced for at least one week before moving ahead to the next one.Range ArcsThe Range Arc is the original lick. Many of these have been borrowed from some of the great jazz trumpeters of all time; Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Chet Baker, Tom Harrell, Randy Brecker, Fats Navarro and Blue Mitchell.You should begin with the key that is marked with an asterisk * ; it is an easy key and range and will help you familiarize yourself with the lick. Practice slowly at first and then work for speed. Once you are familiar with the * lick, start at the beginning of the Range Arc. Work on each key until you get it smoothly. Repeat as needed and rest between each key. Take the D.C. and play 8va through the indicated key (see the box at the end of the Range Arc) that takes you to High C. I originally composed Ping-Pong for tuba solo. The following is a trumpet transcription. Although the program note relates to the tuba version, trumpet players might find the explanation of the genesis of the music helpful.When I first spoke with Sande MacMorran, the tuba player for whom I composed the piece, we discussed the technicalities of the instrument; its optimal range, timbre, and articulation. Sande mentioned, in passing, that the rhythm of swing music is a natural fit for the instrument and even sang a few lines to give examples.In the following days, when I began to plan the new composition, I was surprised that the idea of playing ping-pong unexpectedly took hold of my mind and I couldn’t shake it off. At first, it seemed random and unrelated, but then, as I thought about the rhythmic patterns of the game, it all became clear.In ping-pong, the paddle hits the ball and then the ball hits the table in a pattern reminiscent of the rhythm of swing. While beginners tend to play slower, in triplets, the professionals, much faster, with the table note dotted or even double-dotted. Once I realized what my subconscious was trying to tell me, I listened to (not merely watched) several videos of ping-pong matches and discovered a wealth of entertaining rhythmic patterns. Thus the idea for this miniature tuba piece was born.While the tuba may seem a clumsy and awkward instrument, it is actually quite agile and flexible. It can perform many challenging melodic figures or quick jumps between registers, and it can certainly play ping-pong.Total duration: 1'25, for advanced players.

It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.PDP092). 9 x 12 inches.Solus was commissioned by Mark Ponzo for inclusion on a compact disc devoted to trumpet music by Reynolds. He had been coached by Reynolds in a brass quintet for several years while a graduate student at the Eastman School of Music and has always had tremendous respect for Reynolds as a performer and composer. Ponzo requested that the piece exploit the range of timbres available from various instruments and so the work uses five different horns (trumpets in C, B-flat, and E-flat; flugelhom, and B-flat comet). Ponzo premiered Solus on a recital on 12 March 1995 and subsequently recorded it on The Trumpet Music of Verne Reynolds (Mark 4843-MCD). The composer commented that Solus does not have to be performed in its entirety. N.B. Reynolds stated in the holograph of Solus that all the movements are notated in concert pitch.

Justin Bland’s Fanfare and Chorale for four trumpets, composed in 2014, is a playful piece combining a modern compositional style with hints of baroque elements. The three-part opening fanfare movement in B-flat major begins with a majestic figure in trumpets 1–3 set over a sixteenth note flourish in trumpet 4. While the more lyrical middle section moves to the relative minor, hinting at the coming chorale in the final movement, the movement ends in the same stately character as the opening.In the closing chorale movement, the chorale tune, composed by Bland, is divided between the players in the first section; here, each phrase is stated by an open trumpet and punctuated with a muted trumpet. The melody is then set in long notes above lively sixteenth note passages inspired by the opening fanfare. The work ends with a final harmonized version of the chorale that interjects sixteenth note figures from earlier in the moment.While conceived for four B-flat trumpets, the piece can easily be performed on C trumpets (as written) if desired, or even on four horns.
