Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810972). Albert Robert Mueller (Müller) was a German trombonist born in 1849. He initially received violin lessons and discovered his talent for trombone playing at the age of twelve. He eventually settled in Leipzig and became a member of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra as well as a teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He wrote the School for Trombone in 1902. (Wikipedia) The School for Trombone (part of our Vintage Brass Series, not to be confused with the Technical Etudes) is a very detailed and comprehensive book in three volumes totalling 208 pages, the text being divided into German, English and Russian languages. • Volume I includes detailed lessons on music theory including all scales and keys, rhythm, time signatures, rests, accents, accidentals, explanations of tempo markings, dynamics, posture, tone, a table of positions and notes. The lessons go through different keys starting very slowly and methodically with short exercises....not going too fast for the beginning student. Along the way Mueller inserts easy duets to perform with teacher and student, including many Bach chorales, etc. to get tuning and tone solidified. • Volume II for the intermediate level student, begins with the first studies of slurs and legato. He introduces simple songs and famous melodies including more duets. The exercises get progressively more difficult and include the entire collection of ornaments. • Volume III, for the more advanced student, introduces tenor and alto clefs in scales and studies including more duets. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792139). The Brahms Ten Studies were originally written for Horn or Trumpet and were first published soon after his death in 1897. Unfortunately there is not much written about the origins of the Studies. There are questions as to whether they are original or manufactured by an enterprising musician. In my opinion, a few of the studies, especially the slower ones have the stamp of the Master on them. Mr. Cherry believes that the Studies are authentic. It is fairly certain that Brahms’s father did play some horn and there is a good chance that Johannes performed in a horn club as well. The Studies were all originally written in the key of C treble clef. Mr. Cherry has taken the liberty to transpose many of them into different keys for musical variety and technique. This is a common practice for many Trumpet and Horn study books. He has also added some breath marks and alternate slide positions. Many thanks to friend & colleague, Ralph Sauer, who helped with the editing of these studies. These studies are all in bass clef and appropriate for performers of intermediate level and higher.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792269). The Clarke Method for Trombone has some uncommon features not found in other method books. 1. First, is the use of the key of C for the initial 33 exercises. The author then progresses through all of the keys, alternating the sharp (first) and flat keys through to six sharps and six flats by the end of exercise 155. 2. Secondly, there are no exercises devoted solely to minor keys. However, Clarke employs the minor mode in all of his exercises through the use of scales and arpeggios, so in fact the performer is receiving a steady diet of minor melody built in for him/her. 3. Thirdly, Clarke uses no metronome markings. He explains; each exercise should be practiced carefully over and over again until every difficulty is thoroughly overcome – until the exercise can be played through correctly – before going on to the next. His purpose is to avoid speeding through them. Clarke’s exercises are progressive throughout the keys, however each one starts out easily in order to keep the student focused on the new key and the new progression notes that come with it. For the advanced performer, this book is great to use as a way to ease back into shape after a rest from the instrument, allowing the performer to relearn the instrument carefully and methodically. I use it also for tone building, phrasing, and breath control. Throughout the book, Clarke reminds the performer to always produce a noble sound, stressing natural playing (without forcing) and relaxation. His phrase, the breath is the life of the tone, is a phrase that Remington used throughout his great teaching career as well. Clarke talks about tonguing, saying that, the tongue is used merely as an aid in articulating – not as a necessity... the tone does not depend on the tongue... the tongue should not be made too important...

Gordon Cherry #4806563. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792345). The Otto Langey Tutors were the method books of the early 20th century. Langey, a cellist, was a German immigrant to America who wrote method books for most of the major instruments. Many young instrumentalists used these books for their first studies including Mr. Sauer who in the foreword of the book describes how the Langey Method was one of his mainstays during his early musical years. I started using this method book at age 14 with my teacher Robert Harper (bass trombonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1943 to 1981) and still refer to it today. The rudiments of music are clearly explained, and the scale and arpeggio exercises are excellent for avoiding the boredom that can sometimes set in with other methods. The short etudes starting on page 42 were some of Mr. Harper’s favorites. With these interesting little pieces, I learned how to play exactly what is on the page. Mr. Harper would stop me multiple times (even within the same measure!) to point out the little things that I had ignored or didn’t play correctly. Without this ability to play what is written, it is impossible to build a musical interpretation later on. In addition to Langey’s own etudes, a selection of etudes by other composers (Vaubaron, Belgke, Dieppo, Manna, Clodomir) plus some solo pieces, round out this wonderful old book. If I were limited to one etude book on the proverbial desert island, this would be it. Ralph Sauer This book of over 120 pages is suitable for performers from beginner right up to advanced. His relatively unknown HIGH TONE STUDIES FOR TROMBONE were written in 1936. Teagarden's studies are designed to teach the student how to reach into the high register up to high D, through the patient and slow practice of four introductory warm-ups and fifty-one progressively difficult exercises. None of the studies are more than three lines in length, forcing the student to rest frequently in his own words. In reading through his concise instructions at the beginning of the book, it is obvious that Teagarden had put a lot of thought into his technique. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792651). Bach's Partita BWV 1013 is a wonderful unaccompanied work, and in all likelihood, was written for the Transverse Flute, though that is by no means certain. In fact, there is an earlier version of the Allemande for a keyboard or stringed instrument. The Partita, originally in the key of A minor has been transposed down into D minor, putting it into a perfect range for Solo Trombone. The work is in four movements: Allemande, Corrente, Sarabande and Bourrée Anglaise. It is appropriate for advanced performers. Cherry Classics has acquired Ralph Sauer's earlier edition of the Bach Partita, BWV 1013 for Trombone Alone from Balquhidder Music. Mr. Sauer has taken this opportunity to update the transcription.

These Smears were very popular and cool to perform when they were composed over a century ago. Mr. Hettinga has combined all five of them into one collection. They are appropriate for a moderately advanced performers and are about 6 minutes in length each.Here is an abridged description of them by Bass Trombonist Douglas Yeo.African American trombonist, composer, and bandleader Nathaniel Cleophas Davis (also known as Nathan Davis) was born in Tennessee on August 14, 1888. By 1908, he had moved to Nashville where he directed the band at the Tennessee School for the Blind.Among his musical compositions were five trombone features for band in ragtime style which included Oh, Slip It Man (1916), Mr. Trombonology (1917), and Miss Trombonism (1918). Upon returning from fighting in WWI, Nathaniel Davis continued writing ragtime trombone features including Master Trombone (1919) and a tribute to his wartime service in France, Trombone Francais (1921). Nathaniel Davis died in Atlanta, Georgia, on December 19, 1972, at the age of 84 and is buried in South View Cemetery, Atlanta.

From its earliest beginnings in 1742, others have modified it to suit more modern-sized (larger) orchestras. From the original small baroque-sized orchestra in the early 18th Century to the Classical-sized of Mozart through to the full 20th Century version including percussion and tuba by Sir Thomas Beecham. Others have felt that if Handel had lived in their century he surely would have written his grand masterpiece for larger forces, given the passion of the work.This is Mozart's arrangement from 1789 which was subsequently first published in 1803 and has a Classical-sized orchestra including Alto, Tenor and Bass Trombone. The name, IDIOM comes from the style of writing which reflects the typical use of the French horn in Romantic composition. There are the hunting calls, the hand stopped stings, the long melodic lines, and the waltz...all taken from the customary uses of the instrument and developed into the original work for solo horn. The composer's husband, Richard Raum, who plays trombone requested this transcription.

This transcription is in the original key of A minor, where it lies perfectly in the bass trombone range while also playable on the tenor trombone with F attachment. The first two movements can be reversed to create a traditional fast-slow-fast pattern, or played as originally published. The length of the three-movement work is about 10 minutes and is appropriate for advanced performers.
