Throughout the movementthere are a number of places where two ideas converge to become one. Opening witha fanfare-like gesture, the music then becomes more flowing before building up againto a climax.The second movement, Memorial Song, is a lyrical duet for flugelhorn and euphonium.The movement was not conceived as a specific memorial, but its lyrical and elegiacmood represents the many memorials that we all celebrate, both personal andcorporate.The third movement, Bridges to the Sky, celebrates Pittsburgh as a city of bridges. Holst's 7-movement Suite, The Planets was written between 1914-16 and its first version was scored for two pianos except for the Neptune movement, which was written for organ alone. The music is the first ever composed with a fade-away ending using a womens' chorus. Later, Holst completed his orchestration of the 7-movement Suite, which has become one of the most popular works in the repertoire. Mr. Sauer has brilliantly scored this movement of about nine minutes in length for 14-part brass ensemble with Timpani and Glockenspiel. This concludes his arranging of the complete suite for Large Brass Ensemble. The entire 7-movement Suite is also available for sale as a complete set on our website. Composed about 1810, it wasn’t until 1867, forty years after Beethoven died, that Ludwig Nohl found, transcribed and published Für Elise. Alas, the original signed manuscript that Nohl discovered has since disappeared.     One mystery of course, is Who was Elise? While scholarly guesses have identified several women who could or might have been Elise, there is still no definitive proof.    Another mystery: Did Beethoven actually write this piece? The pianist and musicologist Luca Chiantore has suggested that the original Beethoven manuscript, upon which Ludwig Nohl claimed to base his transcription, may never have existed. On the other hand, there are two surviving preliminary sketches for Für Elise in Beethoven’s hand, and the British composer and musicologist Barry Cooper has pointed out that the rough draft closely resembles the published version.    In this brass quintet version, Trumpet 1 and Trumpet 2 handle the melody-i.e., the right hand in the piano score-for much of the piece, both taking turns and playing together. Most of the time Tuba, Horn in F and Trombone do the honors for the left hand. Horn in F does, however, take the melody line occasionally, sometimes with Trumpet 2 playing a harmony line above. The score performance level is marked Advanced, and with all the sixteenth notes, this arrangement may look difficult. But it’s really more Intermediate, with the only really tricky parts coming in sections D and G.

It is a charming example of neo-classicism, attempting to echo the music from Holberg's era of the 17th century. James Haynor has once again done a splendid job of scoring a major new work for Brass ensemble. The work is appropriate for advanced musicians and about 15 minutes in length.

Debussy's original six movement suite was written and first performed in 1908 on the Piano.It was dedicated to Debussy's daughter, Claude- Emma who was only three at the time. The four movements for brass are: 1. Jimbo's Lullaby (about an elephant) 2. Serenade for the Doll (about an Oriental porcelain doll) 3. The Little Shepherd (a shepherd with his flute) 4. Golliwogg's Cakewalk (they were stuffed black dolls with red pants & wild hair. This 11 minute suite is suitable for advanced performers and is the only arrangement published of this work for brass.

The Holberg Suite, Op. 40, more properly From Holberg's Time (Norwegian: Fra Holbergs tid, German: Aus Holbergs Zeit), subtitled Suite in olden style (Norwegian: Suite i gammel stil, German: Suite im alten Stil), is a suite of five movements based on eighteenth century dance forms, written by Edvard Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Danish-Norwegian humanist playwright Ludvig Holberg. It exemplifies nineteenth century music which makes use of musical styles and forms from the preceding century. The movements of the suite are: Praeludium (Allegro vivace) Sarabande (Andante) Gavotte (Allegretto) Air (Andante religioso) Rigaudon (Allegro con brio) The Holberg Suite was originally composed for the piano, but a year later was adapted for string orchestra. The suite consists of an introduction and a set of dances. It is a charming, early essay in neo-classicism, an attempt to echo as much as was known in Grieg's time of the music of Holberg's era. This edition is an arrangement for a traditional Brass Band, and the music works very well for the band.

Mr. Sauer has brilliantly scored Bach’s fugue for 14-piece Brass ensemble the texture of which is quite transparent until the ending, which goes out in a blaze of glory.
