Ecce Sacerdos Magnus (“Behold the Great Priest”) comes from the early European tradition of plainchant. Bruckner’s setting of the responsory, originally scored for eight-part mixed choir, organ and three trombones, brings certain medieval qualities to an otherwise Romantic-era composition.
This transcription for 10-part brass choir is appropriate for intermediate level and above and attempts to retain the majesty, power, and beauty of the original piece. It should be approached as a choral piece: connected and fluid. The harmonic language is essentially triadic; great care should be taken in the tuning of each chord throughout the piece.
Instrumentation is for: 3 Trumpets in B-flat, 2 Horns, 3 Trombones, Euphonium and Tuba.

The publication consists of full scores for each hymn plus separate instrumental parts and an optional simplified keyboard part. All the arrangements are in four parts, reflecting the traditional SATB voicing. The parts include 1st trumpet in B flat; 2nd trumpet in B flat; horn in F; horn in E flat; trombone and optional tuba; optional bass in B flat and bass in E flat. There are also two optional baritone parts in B flat (TC) and C (BC) in case you need them. They are the same as the tenor part. In some carols, you might prefer to assign any baritones to doubling the bass or doubling the melody an octave lower. The baritone part in C is also playable by trombone. The trombone and tuba parts appear on a single staff. Of course, you can use any number of instruments to a particular part. The optional keyboard part has been simplified and whenever possible limited to single notes in the left hand part and no more than two-note chords in the right. Using the keyboard part, you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios. The scores and all the parts are contained in a single 129-page PDF file.Because the music has been set in brass-friendly keys, the arrangements are not necessarily with other Colin Kirkpatrick arrangements published by Glyn Joseph Editions. This publication includes full four-part instrumental scores plus parts for 1st B flat trumpet, 2nd B flat trumpet, horn in F (with a separate optional part for horn in E flat), trombone and/or tuba. The tuba part is also optional because it either doubles the trombone part or plays an octave below. Both trombone and tuba parts appear on a single staff in the bass clef at concert pitch. The arrangements can be used with brass quartet, brass quintet or brass ensemble. There’s also an optional but useful simplified keyboard part intended for less experienced keyboard players. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. It could be used as the basis of an accompaniment which means that you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios. The arrangements are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a concert or service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. The arrangements been written in brass-friendly keys as often as possible. While the hymns mostly use the traditional harmonies, the carols have been treated more freely. Sort of like the sounds from a group of neighborhood children in the days before play dates, private lessons and organized kids’ sports. These sounds were part and parcel of the games they played, games that originated years, even centuries, before and involved high energy levels and top-of-their-voices counting, chanting or singing (with an occasional Nyah-nyah nyah-nyah nyah nyah thrown in for good measure!). Rowdy and raucous, indeed!  This composition is one that will entertain both adults (who, after all, are just grown-up children!) and youngsters. Like children at play, it races right along. In one 6-minute work, it incorporates tunes of eleven children’s game and campfire songs: Michael Finnegan; Ring a Ring o’ Roses; Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star; London Bridge; Hickory Dickory Dock; Three Blind Mice; John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt; My Pony Boy; Old MacDonald Had A Farm; The Farmer in the Dell and Bingo. And, again, like children at play, there is fun, humor and a surprise at every turn.  A Rowdy, Raucous Rumpus is a hoot to play. At a cut-time tempo of 132 and with 14(!) changes of key, it keeps all five musicians on their toes. And busy: on the Tuba part, there are V.S. (turn the page quickly) indications on the bottom of 6 of the 8 pages, 5 for Trombone and Horn in F, 3 for Trumpet 2, and 2 for Trumpet 1. In Bingo, the last tune, the group intermittently stops playing and claps or foot-taps loudly (which is a good spot for audience participation!). On the audio clip, this is indicated with a click (actually, a tambourine sound).  There are a few high notes scattered throughout. Trumpet plays B above its staff once and A a number of times. Trumpet 2 has one A above its staff. Trombone has one F above its staff. Tuba has one G in the top space of its staff.
