Published by David Healy-Richards (A0.1015626). Moon Chasers is my third musical work and is dedicated to my Girlfriend who I met in the International Brass Band Summer School in Swansea in 2016. This piece of music is aimed at capturing the feeling of a young couple savouring the moment as they experience it. Not worrying about the future or the past just the here and now. I tried to capture this feeling with suspensions and utilising the different sections of the band. The intro represents the end of a manic day, driving home until A. Where the duet kicks in A melody and a counter-melody representing two young lovers. It starts as a minimalist quartet before the scoring becomes a lot thicker allowing more colours to come out. We hear echoes of the next section which starts at (D) with a rhythm that feels like its slightly behind the beat. It's a simple harmonic line but as it feels behind the beat this achieves a kind of euphoric feel to the music. This is then decorated by the twinkling stars that we here popping up every now and again which are represented by the Glockenspiel.

In this collection of songs, Monteverdi, for the first time, starts to bring small groups of songs (2 or 3) to form a 'Scena - a collection with similar words or on a similar theme or by the same poet and keeping them as a little group within the book of madrigals. The sixth song, O Nightingale is a song expressing the lover's feelings about the song of teh nightingale.As with all of Monteverdi's vocal music, it translates really well onto instruments. The individual madrigals are available separately. Published by Phillip Lawrence (A0.883769). I recently published Romeo & Juliet Tchiakovsky which is a big bridge musically technically and and needs a big chunk of stamina. Before I did this there was another work on my mind of an opposite challenge for band in the orch rep dep.An impressionist work of great delicacy, subtle beyond belief, the fabric is fragile like lace with a feeling of transparency and lucidity and must move as if played by one person, colour and timbre, light, lithe, the orchestration a masterpiece, utilising fx from all dep’s often at ppp and most difficult to replicate at all for brass band.And, it’s a fair cop! The purists outsiders will say that this is the last piece that should be arranged for a brass band. So why arrange the greatest impressionist work ever written, for Brass Band?Well, because it’s there, and I believe it can be played with the above requirements by band. The work was written in the summer of 1894, and finished in the September. Three months later in December the Societe Nationale de Musique conducted by Gustave Doret with Marcel Moyse playing the opening flute solo gave the first performance. The concept of the piece was built around a poem by Stephan Mallarme, who describes the wishes and dreams of a faun in the heat of a summer afternoon. Prep for tres difficile?

Symphony No. 4, also known by the composer himself as the Romantic was written in 1874, but revised several times and premiered in 1881 in Vienna. The subtitle actually does not refer to romantic love, but a medieval romance such as some of Wagner's operas.The movement titled Scherzo is full of adventure and vitality with a relaxed middle section. Bruckner himself hinted that the Scherzo movement was a Jadthema or hunting theme and Volkfest or people's festival. The hunting horns are calling, the brass are blowing their fanfares and it is a good day to be hunting. The main feeling from this movement is a strong feeling of the great outdoors.Mr. Johns has arranged this work for 14-part brass ensemble including optional Timpani.The instrumentation is: 4 Trumpets (including piccolo, C, B-flat and Flugelhorn) 4 Horns 4 Trombones, Euphonium and Tuba Timpani (optional)This work is suitable for advanced performers and is about 5 minutes in length.

The original Old Glory was a flag owned by the 19th-century American sea captain William Driver (March 17, 1803 – March 3, 1886), who flew the flag during his career at sea and later brought it to Nashville, Tennessee, where he settled.That of course, is the historic description. (From Wikipedia) Part of a larger work entitled, An American Salutation this piece was written in commemoration of the flag and for the people it represents.Patriotic in its sound, Old Glory would be suggested for any historic American holiday or function, i.e., Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, etc and gives one a proud feeling when played. Also makes a nice addition to any brass quintet program.

Published by Phillip Lawrence (A0.883782). The original folk tune as picked up in the 1960's by Simon & Garfunkle, for Intermediate/Jnr. Brass Band. The tune is anon and indeed very old. In my title, the word Impressions is used to describe the harmonic style which is decidedly French of a Darius Mihaud style or even a light Messian. It should keep the young players on their toes in an aural sense and the tuning of a challenge, and perhaps feeling rather musically grown up delivering this in a concert?

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808675).     The defeat of Igor Svyatoslavich, a Rus’ prince, in his 1185 campaign against invading Cuman (Polovtsy) tribes was immortalized in the Russian epic, The Lay of Igor’s Campaign. Seven centuries later, Alexander Borodin started work on an opera based on that old tale. Borodin died before finishing, but Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov completed Prince Igor, and it was performed for the first time in 1890. Sixty-three years later the Broadway production Kismet opened featuring songs adapted by Robert Wright and George Forrest from the music of Borodin. Arguably, the most popular of the show’s songs was Stranger in Paradise, which was based on the Gliding Dance of the Maidens from the Polovtsian Dances of Prince Igor.     This beautiful brass quintet arrangement of Gliding Dance of the Maidens was adapted from the orchestra score. The key is A major, time signature is 4/4 and tempo marking is Andantino at the opening, slowing to a suggested quarter note = 63 at measure 15. Trumpets, Horn in F and Trombone all play a few grace notes. Highest notes for Trumpets are their G-sharp just above the staff; for Trombone, E above the staff. While not particularly challenging technically, the key to playing this piece is interpretation and feeling.    This arrangement was completed in 2017, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 38 seconds. Elizabeth Raum's Quintet for Brass was written in 1980 and is just now being published for the first time. The work is in four movements: 1. Prelude, 2. Scherzo and Blues, 3. Passacaglia and Fugue and 4. Rondo. It is written for traditional brass quintet with Trumpets in B-flat for advanced performers and is about 15 minutes in length. The music is very expressive and tonal. Below is a brief description of the work by the composer, Elizabeth Raum. This piece is very much based on various musical forms. The Prelude has opened many a musical work from Baroque to the present. Then follows Scherzo and Blues, a light hearted bonbon moving into a lazy blues. Next is pure Baroque starting with a Passacaglia followed by a Fugue based on the Passacaglia progression. And finally finishing up with the Rondo, in a major key, light-hearted, canonic in places, with a feeling of the evolution of musical form.
