It was written and produced by Stock Aitken and Waterman, and released as the first single from Astley's debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody. The song was a worldwide number-one hit, initially in the United Kingdom in 1987, where it stayed at the top of the chart for five weeks and was the best-selling single of that year. It eventually topped the charts in 25 countries, including the United States and West Germany, and winning Best British Single at the 1988 Brit Awards. The song is considered to be Astley's signature song and it is often played at the end of his live concerts.

Gilligan's Island is an American sitcom created and produced by Sherwood Schwartz.The series followed the comic adventures of seven castaways as they attempted to survive on an island on which they had been shipwrecked. Most episodes revolve around the dissimilar castaways' conflicts and their unsuccessful attempts, for whose failure Gilligan was frequently responsible, to escape their plight. Sherwood Schwartz not only created and produced Gilligan’s Island but he wrote the famous ear-worm theme song as well. One can argue that the demonstrative and jaunty theme song now precedes the show itself in terms of popularity. It is the theme song that lays out the premise of the show perfectly: Five passengers set sail from Hawaii aboard the S.S. Minnow, crewed by the quick-tempered Skipper Jonas Grumby and enthusiastic screw-up Gilligan. When a storm shipwrecks them on a deserted island, what was supposed to be a three-hour tour turns into a three-year limbo, the passengers forever on the verge of escape but never quite succeeding. For those who remember, this little novelty cannot fail to please performers and audiences alike.

It was allegedly written for a 5-shilling bet in Stalybridge on January 30, 1912 and performed the next night at the local music hall. Now commonly called It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, the original printed music calls it It’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary. It became popular among soldiers in the First World War and is remembered as a song of World War I. Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile is the full name of the World War I marching song, published in 1915 in London. It was written by Welsh songwriters, George Henry Powell under the pseudonym of George Asaf, and set to music by his brother Felix Powell. It was featured in the American show Her Soldier Boy, which opened in December 1916. This skillful arrangement by Jari Villanueva captures the flavor of the original tunes and would be a great selection commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I. The arrangement includes the verses of the tunes and the British bugle call Fall In. This clever arrangement culminates in a rousing section that superimposes both tunes. Included is a Full Score and parts for Brass Ensemble. Also included are substitute parts for Eb Horns and Treble Clef Baritone Horn A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by bands, brass ensembles and brass quintets all over the country including many military groups. Published by Warren J Wernick (A0.948762). Blackadder is a series of four BBC One pseudohistorical British sitcoms, plus several one-off installments, which originally aired from 1983–1989. All television episodes starred Rowan Atkinson as the antihero Edmund Blackadder and Tony Robinson as Blackadder's dogsbody, Baldrick. Each series was set in a different historical period, with the two protagonists accompanied by different characters, though several reappear in one series or another, e.g., Melchett (Stephen Fry) and Lord Flashheart (Rik Mayall). The theme song is composed by Howard Goodall, an English composer of musicals, choral music and music for television. He also presents music-based programs for television and radio, for which he has won many awards. In May 2008, he was named as a presenter and Composer-in-Residence with the UK radio channel Classic FM. In May 2009, he was named Composer of the Year at the Classic BRIT Awards. Goodall said of the Theme, They asked me if I would have a go at the tune. With all of these things, although I do come up with my own ideas, you don't really come up with a good one unless you talk it through with them and the vision they've got. It was quite obvious, the historical approach they were going for. What's interesting is that the first series, the medieval one with 'Richard the Fourth', was much more filmic and much more historical. That's why we ended up with that tune. Whereas had the first series been the Elizabethan one, the theme would have been slightly gentler, less heroic. .

The first performance of "Martha, or The Market at Richmond," a romantic comic opera by the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, took place in Vienna in 1847. Subsequent presentations were performed in a number of other languages, including Hungarian, Czech, English and Italian. Two of the most memorable arias from Martha are “The Last Rose of Summer” and “Ach! so fromm.” “Last Rose” was, of course, based on the poem by Thomas Moore. “Ach! So fromm,” known more familiarly by its Italian lyric, “M'appari, tutt'amor,” was an original composition by Flotow, a piece he had composed for an earlier opera and inserted into Act 3 of Martha as Lyonel’s tenor solo. In 1955, The Crew Cuts, a Canadian pop singing group, recorded a song titled “Mostly Martha.” Written by Dorcas Cochran (words) and Ralph Sterling (music), it charted in early 1956. As so many pop song writers have done, Sterling borrowed the melody from a piece of classical music: “M’appari.” While “M’appari” and “Mostly Martha” share the same melody, the words and sentiment are quite different. Lyonel laments that Martha has left him, while The Crew Cuts jauntily proclaim, “Mostly Martha, Mostly Martha. What has she got? She's got the most.” This brass quintet arrangement takes a middle ground. It follows closely the basic structure of Flotow’s operatic aria but does so in a sort-of up-tempo manner and with a great deal of variation in the accompaniment. It’s not really The-Crew-Cut-style “She’s got the most,” but it’s certainly more positive than Lyonel’s song of longing. The piece starts with a suggested tempo of 90 bpm, changes to 80 at section C, and speeds up to 92 at the end. All instruments get a turn playing the melody, and there are no really tricky rhythmic patterns. There are, however, grace notes, rallentandos, an “a piacere” and a number of fermatas. All notes are, for the most part, within normal playing range of each of the five instruments, with two exceptions: near the end Trumpet 1 has an A above its staff, followed two measures later by a high B-flat. Probably the accomplishment for which he’s most remembered today is his composing of There’ll Be Some Changes Made, published in 1921. Billy Higgins, popular stage comedian, wrote the lyrics, and Ethel Waters, then just 24, recorded the song on the Black Swan label. The disc quickly achieved hit status, and the song has remained popular across multiple musical platform styles ever since. This arrangement is a happy, fun piece and includes some of the great (and familiar) Vaudeville-style ornaments and phrases. It’s a real toe-tapper. For the most part this arrangement is up-tempo, about 140 bpm. It does slow to 92 at the first iteration of the verse and again for the final ¬6 measures of the piece. Time signature is 4/4 except for measure 89, which is 6/4. The key is B-flat throughout, and the melody weaves among all instruments. Trumpet 1 plays B5 (B-flat trumpet’s high C) briefly at measures 4 and 35 and for two measures at the very end of the piece. Tuba plays G3 briefly several times in measures 90-93. Other than that, there are no exceptionally out-of-normal-range notes. Trumpets 1 and 2 may wish to double-tongue at measure 64. Chicago’s Root & Cady published it in April of that year, Christy’s Minstrels premiered it and it became enormously popular. The lyrics to Kingdom Coming, also known as The Year of Jubilo, were written as though slaves in the Confederacy were celebrating their upcoming freedom. However, the song was actually released eight months before President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Interestingly, Kingdom Coming also gained popularity in the South. A Southern edition was published in August in 1864, and the song remained a favorite in the former Confederacy for some years. Kingdom Coming has been used as theme or background music in a number of film, television and radio settings. Almost certainly its most popular iteration in modern times was the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra’s 1952 recording under the title Doodletown Fifers. This arrangement is a show-off piece for each member of the quintet. It moves along at a brisk pace of about 108, begins in the key of C and changes to A-flat, then B-flat. The first time through the melody, all instruments perform ensemble. Each succeeding repetition features an instrumentalist, starting with tuba and working up to Trumpet 1. The piece ends with another ensemble version. There are no exceptionally out-of-normal-playing-range notes: Trumpets 1 and 2 both play their B-flat below the scale several times, and Trumpet 2 plays G below the scale; Horn in F also plays its G below the scale; Trombone’s range is G at the bottom of the scale to D above the scale; Tuba’s lowest note is A-flat below the scale. Trumpet 1 will probably triple tongue its repetition of the melody, and some triple tonguing may be called for near the end of the piece for Trumpets 1 and 2 and Trombone. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.817619). James Alan Bland, composer of “In the Evening by the Moonlight,” was a prolific song writer. He is said to have created the words and music for more than 600 compositions. Born in 1854 to a free African American family in Flushing, New York, he made a name for himself as musician, composer and minstrel performer. Among his compositions were “Oh, Dem Golden Slippers,” “In the Morning in the Bright Light” and “De Golden Wedding.” His most famous song by far was “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny,” which the State of Virginia used as its official anthem for over 50 years. Bland, in keeping with his persona as a minstrel, wrote the lyrics to “In the Evening by the Moonlight” in dialect. Years passed and sensitivities changed, but the song’s poignant melody and basic sentiment survived. Latter day recordings, such as those by Bing Crosby and the Ray Charles Singers, dropped the dialect and objectionable terms. One of the most notable versions was by singer, pianist and civil rights activist Nina Simone, released in 1960 on the album Nina at Newport. This brass quintet version begins with the group instrumentally humming along under an eight-measure Horn in F introduction. The first statement of the melody initially takes the form of a partial call-and-response between a Trombone/Horn duo and Trumpet 1, then switches to an exchange between Trumpet 1 and Tuba. Next, the melody is repeated but in a rhythmic pattern reminiscent of the 1880 tune “Here Dem Bells”; Tuba plays counterpoint. Third time around, the melody is presented almost exactly as Bland wrote it and as Hitchcock’s Music Store published it in 1880. Finally, the tempo slows and the melody is presented as so many have sung it around campfires at YMCA, 4-H and other youth camps all over the country: softly and tenderly. The arrangement ends with a brief recapitulation of the introduction. There are no really difficult or tricky rhythms in this arrangement. Trumpet 1’s highest note, which occurs in Section D, is A above its staff; Tuba’s lowest, G below the staff. Otherwise, there are no exceptionally high or low notes. The piece opens in the key of F major then, about halfway through, changes to G major. Tempo opens with a suggested MM of 104, speeds up to 120, slows to 66, increases again to 122 and finally slows to 66. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 4 minutes, 22 seconds. (5 tpts, 4 troms, tuba, rhythm section). We colleges giggled, Manchester gigged, and after 4 years we ended up in Ronnie Scott’s. In The Stone seemed to be a must for brass band and difficult dictation and I don’t like to leave things out or simplify. So I’m starting an EWF collection with September and Fantasy to come soon. The semiquaver syncs will take some time to give it the relaxed feel especially in the bass dep. Here’s to the memory of Brass Injection and RNCM days.

Al Jolson introduced it to live audiences, Marion Harris’ record went to #1 in early 1919, and since then dozens of artists have recorded it . . . and many are still doing so. The words are rather sad-she’s leaving and he’s trying to get her to stay-but played up tempo, the melody is bouncy and fun. That sad-versus-happy dichotomy is incorporated in this arrangement. It begins with a bright, bouncy introduction and first-time-through of the chorus, then slows so the Horn in F can play a melancholic and somewhat schmaltzy rendition of the verse. The Tuba provides a transition back to the upbeat chorus, and we are again off to the races. Layton’s melody slips and slides from one instrument to the next (with the Tuba getting an entire iteration all to itself!), until the pace again slows for a 4-bar reminder of the sentimental verse, which then gives way to a rousing Dixieland-like closing.

The second, a product of Scandinavian imaginations, is a rather unattractive dwarf (or maybe a giant) that dwells in caves or on mountains. The third is a small, hirsute and naughty household spirit. In other words, these are just the types of beings that show up on your doorstep on October 31 evenings threatening to play tricks unless you provide treats.  This composition exemplifies not only these creatures, but also the witches, skeletons, ghosts, vampires, black cats and other scary beings that populate Halloween. Written in the key of C minor with a 6/8 time signature, it rolls along at a suggested tempo of 96 BPM. Based primarily on the traditional melody, The Hearse Song (the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out), it also quotes the composer’s own The Eerie Night and Chopin’s Marche Funèbre. And like the worms of the song, the melodies work their way sinuously in and out among the five instruments. Most notes are well within normal playing range: Trumpet 1’s highest is five A notes above its staff; Tuba’s lowest, G below the staff. There are no tricky rhythmic figures. It’s just a fun piece for Halloween . . . or any time of the year.  Completed in 2021, performance time for Gremlins, Trolls and Hobgoblins runs about 3 minutes, 33 seconds. Published by Albismusic (A0.1107288). Julius Katterfeldt was born in Wandsbek in 1813. Wandsbek was not yet part of Hamburg at that time. His father Johann Hinrich Katterfeldt was the organist at the famous Schnitger organ of Hamburg's main church St. Jakobi. He also gave his son first music lessons. Later he was a pupil of the famous Christian Heinrich Rinck in Darmstadt. Julius Katterfeldt was first organist at the church of St. Johannes in Eppendorf. In 1840, Katterfeldt was appointed by the Danish king to the post of cathedral organist in Schleswig. After the Schleswig-Holstein uprising (1848 to 1851) he had to give up his organist post at the cathedral. Friedrich von Reventlou (1797-1874) brought Katterfeldt to the monastery church in Preetz, where Renventlou was provost, because of the political quarrels over the county of Holstein. In Preetz he even had to take on sexton duties in addition to organ duties. After the war (Battle of Dybbøl/DK), Schleswig once again belonged to the Republic of Prussia. For this reason, the German Emperor had a new tower built for Schleswig Cathedral in 1864. It can be assumed that the church symphony by Julius Katterfeldt was composed for this purpose beforehand and was therefore later published by the renowned Berlin music publisher BOTE & BOCK. His Church Symphony Opus 18, for brassband and organ, is dedicated to the Prussian Emperor Wilhelm I. Katterfeldt’s Church Symphony is the first original symphonic work for the instrumentation organ and brass band. His son-in-law was the Schwerin cathedral organist George Hepworth (1825-1918). Through his contacts in England, some of J. (A0.873896). Hey Friends! As always, I have a couple public domain arrangements on my website, peteyc.com. Check them out, they're cheaper and support me more than the pennies I get from SMP.In it's original key, this arrangement sits up pretty high for a couple of the horns, so I included a 2nd version that is a whole step down and is a little more comfortable to play. The trade-off is that horn 4 is mostly in bass clef in the lower pitched version. Choose whichever one you like though!The Four Seasons makes for great chamber music though. It's melodic, harmonic, tasty stuff. This one is short but sweet. I hope you enjoy it!
