A Musical Offering, BWV 1079, is a collection of canons and fugues based on a single musical theme given to Bach by Frederick the Great of Prussia. The Ricercar a 6 is a 6-voice fugue considered to be the highlight of the entire work and described as possibly the greatest piano composition in musical history. Mr. Sauer has brilliantly scored Bach’s fugue for 14-piece Brass ensemble the texture of which is quite transparent until the ending, which goes out in a blaze of glory. Instrumentation: 4 Trumpets in C, 4 Horns, 4 Trombones, 2 Tubas (optional single tuba part also included). The work is about 8 minutes in length and is suitable for advanced performers.

He and Edvard Grieg wanted to create a Norwegian musical expression and a Norwegian music based on Norwegian folk music traditions. In addition, he was known as a positive, cheerful and excited person. However, as is well known, Nordraak’s life ended abruptly, he became infected with tuberculosis, and died a painful death on a beautiful May day in Berlin in 1866. Score and parts. 20 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #3213035. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808676). Marvin Hamlisch’s score for the 1973 movie The Sting revived interest in ragtime music. Ragtime, of course, is music, often in march-time, that features syncopation, a ragged beat. It originated in African-American districts of large cities and first flourished during the period, 1895-1918. One of the most successful ragtime composers was Scott Joplin, known as the King of Ragtime. Hamlisch used several Joplin compositions as background music for the George Roy Hill-directed film, and one of those was this beautiful and contemplative 1909 composition, Solace: A Mexican Serenade. In All Music Guide to Classical Music: The Definitive Guide to Classical Music (Woodstra et al., ed., CMP Books: 2005), Blair Johnston called Solace a musical hybrid neither authentically Mexican nor authentic ragtime. It is, instead, a habanera, but also a very lovely piece of Americana. This brass quintet arrangement of Solace was adapted from the Joplin piano score. Like the score, this arrangement is in 2/4 time and contains a lot of 16th notes. Joplin’s tempo instruction, however, is Very slow march time, and the metronome marking suggests 96 eighth notes a minute, so in reality the actual tempo is an andante 4/8. Trumpet 1 has some B-above-the-staff notes in the last section, Trumpet 2 has a few interesting rhythmic figures in section B; Trombone has 3 or 4 F-above-the-staff notes, and Tuba plays a couple of top-of-the-staff A’s in section D and at the very end. Plus, of course, the piece is syncopated. Completed in 2017, this arrangement runs about 6 minutes, 10 seconds. A Piacere was a phrase used in the 19th century to leave the interpretation of a musical passage up to the player. In this piece, this is done by leaving an improvising soloist to play as he or she wants accompanied by a large brass and percussion ensemble. The brass ensemble plays written rhythmic and melodic cells, the order of which is indicated in concert by the conductor. A Piacere was a Commande d'Etat, from the French government in 1996. Depending on the improvisations, the duration is between 20-30 minutes. Explanations are to be found at the end of the score.A Piacere was premiered by Michel Godard, tuba soloist with the ensemble A Piacere, Philippe Barthod, conductor at Contrexeville, France on October 29, 1996.

Published by Randy A. Steinberg (A0.870397). Giovanni Gabrieli was no mere composer. He was an event. The figure at the nexus of many things all coming together in one grand tide. The greatest church in the greatest city of Europe. Freedom of intellectual thought. A Venetian School of composers at the forefront of musical innovation. The printing press and musical publishing. A Doge (Chief Magistrate or Duke) willing to spend, and spend big, on musical pomp and ceremony. A dearth of wealth and money to fund the grandest celebrations. He was the leading Italian composer and organist in Venice at its greatest heights at the chasm between the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque period in music. Presented here is a Canzona published around 1615 for 6 brass. A variety of substitute parts are also included to handle the trombone parts with French horns and tubas. A great work that draws from Gabrieli’s many styles. The piece starts with a song like tune that is repeated throughout. Each variation is separated by a 3/4 dance-like chanson repeated throughout. The final cadence is classic Gabrieli with its grand finale. A Gabrieli instrumental ensemble work that provides listeners with a variety of common Gabrieli touches all in one piece without requiring a lot of musical forces.

Presented here is a wonderful Canzona published around 1615 for 10 brass with substitute parts for trumpets and trombones. The 4th Trombone part can also be played with Tuba if so desired. A great representative work of Gabrieli’s, this piece presents a 1 bar dance-like rhythm that is repeated and underscored throughout. After many variations, a chanson-like dance theme can be heard followed by a final presentation of the original melody that heads to a grand conclusion. An impressive and fun work for almost any church or concert setting.

One of Gabrieli’s more beautiful and triumphant works, this piece starts out with a somber harmonic display that soon turns major alternating between the choirs. A brief chanson-like dance interlude then leads to the triumphant finale. A great work that displays the full harmonic range of the brass with many of Gabrieli’s typical antiphonal effects.

He was the leading Italian composer and organist in Venice at its greatest heights at the chasm between the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque period in music. Presented here is a wonderful Canzona published around 1615 for 3 brass choirs each with trumpets, trombones and tubas. Substitute parts are also included to handle the trombone parts with French horns. Each choir starts out with a pleasing harmonic chorale-like melody which then devolves into antiphonal and echo effects that Gabrieli is best known for. An impressive work for almost any church setting.
