Published by William Ortiz (A0.1008980). Quinteto para Metales is a three-movement brass quintet. The first movement, Moderato fantasioso, is episodic and phantasmagoric in nature. Commences with a flamenco fanfare like motif in the first trumpet. Incisive rhythmic patterns, repetitive and fluctuating motives emerge and collide in paired and contrapuntal fashion. The second movement, Sandungeo, is in complete contrast to the first. This modal movement utilizes Caribbean and Hip-Hop dance motifs to discern a livier, sunny and festive milieu. Just like in a Jazz ensemble, there are sections in which each instrument is called upon to solo against a rhythmic basso continuo. Rhythmic and melodic motifs from the first two movements are used to construct the final movement: Coral gótico. The recurring coral theme and the transformed motivic material recalls and conjures cyclic unity and closure for the whole work.

A fanfare for a graduation ceremony is unusual in celebrating the whole assembled company: students, their supporting families, distinguished guests and the staff. Wishing to make the piece relevant to York St John's University, I considered its religious foundation and dedication to St John, the apostle. I was delighted to find reference to a Missa Brevis by Robert Hugill, which has never been performed and may never have been published: this includes an Agnus Dei. The composer very generously sent me a copy, and I have inserted a well-disguised quotation from it. Agnus Dei, Lamb of God, is taken from the Gospel of St John, Chapter 1 Verse 29. My central section is a slow peacock processional pavane, as I anticipate the parade of begowned personages. I wanted to avoid unnecessary dissonance and confusion to be created by York Minster's echo. I hoped the echo would enrich the texture rather than muddy it, therefore, I used a scale without semitones--the whole-tone scale, and the lack of rapid passage-work will also help in this acoustic. I love the antiphonal works of, for instance, Giovanni Gabrieli, which were intended for cathedrals, and Decani-Cantoris antiphony appears in, for example, Orlando Gibbons' O Clap Your Hands, which can be found in the 17th century Bing-Gostling part-books at York Minster. The Graduation Fanfare lasts about 1 minute 50 seconds.

Published by Bill Malcolm (A0.786174). I wrote the Fanfare and Scherzo for this quintet in 1979 using an ink pen and manuscript paper the old-fashioned way. These two movements were premiered by The Palos Verdes Brass Quintet that year and then were largely forgotten as I started working in non-musical areas the next year.After I retired, I ran across them while cleaning out my desk and offered them to the current PVSB Brass Quintet (none of whom were in the original group) and they graciously played them again. I always intended to write two more movements and finally did it 40 years later.The Lullaby calls for flügelhorns and has a vocal part. It is not intended to be sung necessarily but for the lyrics to provide a mood for this dark piece, which is probably best suited for Eddie Munster or Lio. I have sort of a warped sense of humor. The Finale is more serious, but not that much. Aside from the Scherzo the piece is not too difficult. The duration is about 12 minutes.

British composer Alexander Robert Reinagle wrote this melody about 1836 and named it after the church where he was organist, Oxford's St. Peter-in-the-East. First published as a musical setting for Psalm 118, it was adapted to John Newton’s How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds in 1861 and then to the hymn by John Oxenham (William A. Dunkerley), In Christ There Is No East or West, in the early 20th Century. While some sources specify that the St. Peter melody should be played without any festive fanfares, this brass quintet version does contain a few ceremonial flourishes. Most players will have little or no difficulty with this piece. The andante moderato tempo should be interpreted as somewhere in the vicinity of quarter note = 92. Most of the rhythm patterns involve quarter and eighth notes, with a few 16th-note passages scattered throughout. Trumpet 1’s highest note is its high A; tuba’s lowest is G below the staff. Otherwise, the music remains well within the normal playing range of all instruments. This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 4 minutes, 13 seconds. Published by Randy A. Steinberg (A0.870434). This arrangement of a popular fanfare from Handel’s Water Music has been commonly played at church services and weddings for many years. The Water Music itself is a collection of pieces written at different times between 1717 and 1733. It is not clear as to the setting these were written for although most speculation seems to believe that these were pieces written for King George I during his many river outings. The collection of the pieces was assembled and published under the title Water Music in 1740. Although commonly written for small orchestra or larger brass ensembles, usually with two F Horns, this arrangement has been specially scored for a standard brass quintet instrumentation. In addition, the seldom played middle section has also been included. The fanfare’s popular melody is easily recognized by audiences and the work is still as exciting today as it was when first performed in the 18th century.

Inspired by the music of medieval community brass bands, this short piece is a fun folk-like dance in which each of the 5 instruments' lines are viewed as separate and equally important melodies.
