I was asked to arrange a selection of music that was heard during the conflict, and to supplement that with songs from between the wars and from WW2... I arranged quite a few...Suitable for those summer small group jobs that are becoming ever more popular in the UK, particularly for lower section and non-competing bandsWe'll Meet Again is a 1939 British song made famous by singer Vera Lynn with music and lyrics composed and written by English songwriters Ross Parker and Hughie Charles. The song is one of the most famous of the Second World War era, and resonated with soldiers going off to fight as well as their families and sweethearts.The song gave its name to the 1943 musical film We'll Meet Again in which Dame Vera Lynn played the lead role. Lynn's recording is featured in the final scene of Stanley Kubrick's 1964 film Dr. Strangelove, and was also used in the closing scenes of the 1986 BBC television serial The Singing Detective. British director John Schlesinger used the song in his 1979 World War II film, Yanks, which is about British citizens and American soldiers during the military buildup in the UK as the Allies prepared for the D-Day Invasion.The obligato euphonium part can be omitted if required. The vocal line is also on the 1st Cornet line so this could be played as a standalone item.

Hymns for Brass BandI arranged this version of the fabulous funerary hymn for a friend of mine who was a cornet player in a local brass band. He specifically asked for a version that had a Cornet fanfare into the last verse and a scale based 'obligato'. As he put it very succinctly when I showed him the arrangement a few weeks before he died - 'I have been telling those buggers on the cornet section how important learning scales are. Now they might realise why'This is a straightforward arrangement of the hymn. The final fanfare and scales from the cornets can be omitted at the discretion of the conductor

This is an arrangement with a tale to tell... A few years ago my wife and I were invited to attend a surprise 90th birthday party for the legendary brass band conductor James Scott. The party was held at Uppermill golf course in the heart of Saddleworth. Anyone familiar with the annual brass band festival that is the Whit Friday March contests will be familiar with the area and perhaps also with its somewhat damp climate. My wife and I decided that we would make a mini-break out of it and took our touring caravan to stay on a small farm site near Freisland (another Whit Friday venue). the weather was as predicted and it rained... and it rained... and then it rained some more to the extent that we had a family of ducks swimming around outside our caravan door. TV, and Internet connection in Saddleworth, in a caravan in the rain is virtually non-existent so we were well and truly stuck. We ventured out into nearby town of Oldham and eventually found a bookshop. Browsing through the music section I stumbled across a piano reduction of the show score to Mary Poppins. Contained in the score was a 32 bar, simple piano reduction of Step in Time... The rest, as they say, is history... This arrangement is not such a simple reduction. There are frequent changes of key, and time signatures throughout, but it has proven to be great fun to play and rehearse. Particularly with bands that are not the best 'sight readers'...

The Versatile Brass Classical CollectionThis is the Full Brass Band ArrangementI did this arrangement originally for Versatile Brass, which we played on a number of concerts. This is not an arrangement for the 'faint of heart'. It is difficult, because the piece is difficult... but what a magnificent piece of music it is. According to legend, Death appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death calls forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle (here represented by the trumpets). His skeletons dance for him until the rooster crows at dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year.The original piece opens with a playing a single note, D, played twelve times on the Harp, in my arrangement this is played by Tuba and Tubular Bell (the twelve strokes of midnight). The trumpet enters playing the tritone, which was known as the diabolus in musica (the Devil in music). Out of interest in the original, the solo violin plays this, during the Medieval and Baroque eras, consisting of an A and an Eâ™-in an example of scordatura tuning, the violinist's E string was actually been tuned down to an Eâ™ to create the dissonant tritone., no need for such alterations here.

Over the last few years, this particular song has proved to be very popular with couples getting married. The solo part can be played on the 1st Trumpet/Cornet part or can be sung. For this purpose, the words are added to the solo part.This is a simple arrangement that can be played by any level of ensemble. The String Synth Part can be omitted if not required. At a little over 2 minutes, this is ideally suited to the procession of the bride into the church, or for the happy couple leaving after the ceremony. Published by Kevin P Holdgate (A0.791040). There's No Business Like Show Business is an Irving Berlin song, written for the 1946 musical Annie Get Your Gun and orchestrated by Ted Royal. The song, a slightly tongue-in-cheek salute to the glamour and excitement of a life in show business, is sung in the musical by members of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in an attempt to persuade Annie Oakley to join the production. It is reprised three times in the musical but for the purposes of the show that I made this arrangement for only 2 verses were required... a third verse could easily be added of course with appropriate lyrics.The song is also featured in the 1954 movie of the same name, where it is notably sung by Ethel Merman as the main musical number. The movie, directed by Walter Lang, is essentially a catalog of various Berlin's pieces, in the same way that Singin' in the Rain-which starred Donald O'Connor as well-was a collection of Arthur Freed songs. There was also a disco version of the song made during the 1970s, with Merman reprising her singing role in The Ethel Merman Disco Album. The song became one of Ethel Merman's standards and was often performed by her at concerts and on television.This is a simple arrangement of the song playable by all levels of ensemble
