Originally it was credited as written by Jack Judge and co-credited to Henry James Harry Williams. It was allegedly written for a 5-shilling bet in Stalybridge on 30 January 1912 and performed the next night at the local music hall. Now commonly called It's a Long Way to Tipperary, the original printed music calls it It's a Long, Long Way to Tipperary. It became popular among soldiers in the First World War and is remembered as a song of that war.Welcoming signs in the referenced county of Tipperary, Ireland, humorously declare, You've come a long long way... in reference to the song.This is a very simple arrangement for Brass Ensemble playable by all levels of player.

Versatile Brass 'Old Time Favourites' CollectionWe're Going to Hang out the Washing on the Siegfried Line is a popular song by Ulster songwriter Jimmy Kennedy, written whilst he was a Captain in the British Expeditionary Force during the early stages of the Second World War, with music by Michael Carr. It was first published in 1939The Siegfried Line was a chain of fortifications along Germany's Western border, analogous to the Maginot Line in France.At the first big wartime variety concert organized by ENSA, which was broadcast by the BBC from RAF Hendon in North London on 17 October 1939, Adelaide Hall performed the song accompanied by Mantovani and his orchestra. A rare newsreel of this concert exists, and the footage is thought to be the earliest surviving film of a performer singing the song.The song was used as a morale-booster during the war, particularly up to and during the Battle of France.This is a simple arrangement of the song with a vocal line added if required.

Versatile Brass 'Old Time Favourites' CollectionThis is another popular song from the WW2 era, although it was written a few years before for a film of the same title.Sing As We Go is a 1934 British musical film starring Gracie Fields, John Loder and Stanley Holloway. The script was written by Gordon Wellesley and J. B. Priestley.Considered by many to be British music hall star Gracie Fields' finest vehicle, this film was written for her by leading novelist J.B. Priestley. In this morale-boosting depression movie, set in the industrial north of England, Fields stars as a resourceful, determined working class heroine, laid off from her job in a clothing mill, who has to seek work in the seaside resort of Blackpool. This gives her the opportunity both to fall into many misadventures and, of course, to sing.The decision to film on location brings the film a life and immediacy all too absent from most films of the period. The film provides us with a snapshot of life in a seaside resort in the 1930s. The final scene of the millworkers returning to the re-opened mill while Fields leads them in the rousing title song has become an almost iconic film cliché.This is a simple arrangement of the title song with the lead line on solo Cornet. The Versatile Brass Sextet CollectionSuitable for players of all levels (Includes treble clef parts for trombone and Eb bass plus Eb Horn)Suitable as a light concert item, singalong or as part of a Beer Keller SetOom-Pah-Pah is a lively and somewhat risqué show tune with music and lyrics by Lionel Bart and appearing in the musical Oliver!, when it is sung by Nancy and the crowd at the Three Cripples tavern. The word oom-pah-pah is seemingly used euphemistically to refer to both intoxication and fornication; however, as the song points out, the word's meaning is only as dirty as the listener interprets it. Although not an original music hall song, it recalls that genre well and, in terms of both its tempo and suggestiveness, shares characteristics with such late 19th century songs as Ta-ra-ra Boom-de-ay.In the stage musical, the song opens Act II and does not contribute to the storyline. For the 1968 film version, it was moved to near the end and given a dramatic purpose. Sikes has refused to let Nancy take Oliver out of the pub and, unknown to him, to Mr Brownlow and rescue. He orders Bullseye to guard Oliver while he immerses himself in discussion with Fagin. So Nancy starts the song and gradually works the pub crowd into a raucous singalong, hoping their noise will drown out Bullseye's barking long enough for her to get Oliver away.

The Versatile Brass Classical CollectionThis is the Full Brass Band ArrangementI did this arrangement originally for Versatile Brass, which we played on a number of concerts. This is not an arrangement for the 'faint of heart'. It is difficult, because the piece is difficult... but what a magnificent piece of music it is. According to legend, Death appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death calls forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle (here represented by the trumpets). His skeletons dance for him until the rooster crows at dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year.The original piece opens with a playing a single note, D, played twelve times on the Harp, in my arrangement this is played by Tuba and Tubular Bell (the twelve strokes of midnight). The trumpet enters playing the tritone, which was known as the diabolus in musica (the Devil in music). Out of interest in the original, the solo violin plays this, during the Medieval and Baroque eras, consisting of an A and an Eâ™-in an example of scordatura tuning, the violinist's E string was actually been tuned down to an Eâ™ to create the dissonant tritone., no need for such alterations here.
