Published by Kevin P Holdgate (A0.862274). This is an 'abridged' arrangement of the famous overture to Rossini's opera 'The Barber of Saville' but retains all of the character of the original. I originally completed this arrangement as part of an entertainment contest tracing the development of brass band arrangements and the music played by brass bands through the years. The original brass band arrangement of this work was far too long to sensibly fit into an entertainment program so I went back to the original Rossini score and did my own; very much to suit the brass band that I was conducting. This effectively means that it can be played by all grades of band and makes a great concert opener that is not overly long.

The script was written by Gordon Wellesley and J. B. Priestley.Considered by many to be British music hall star Gracie Fields' finest vehicle, this film was written for her by leading novelist J.B. Priestley. In this morale-boosting depression movie, set in the industrial north of England, Fields stars as a resourceful, determined working class heroine, laid off from her job in a clothing mill, who has to seek work in the seaside resort of Blackpool. This gives her the opportunity both to fall into many misadventures and, of course, to sing.The decision to film on location brings the film a life and immediacy all too absent from most films of the period. The film provides us with a snapshot of life in a seaside resort in the 1930s. This is an arrangement with a tale to tell... A few years ago my wife and I were invited to attend a surprise 90th birthday party for the legendary brass band conductor James Scott. The party was held at Uppermill golf course in the heart of Saddleworth. Anyone familiar with the annual brass band festival that is the Whit Friday March contests will be familiar with the area and perhaps also with its somewhat damp climate. My wife and I decided that we would make a mini-break out of it and took our touring caravan to stay on a small farm site near Freisland (another Whit Friday venue). the weather was as predicted and it rained... and it rained... and then it rained some more to the extent that we had a family of ducks swimming around outside our caravan door. TV, and Internet connection in Saddleworth, in a caravan in the rain is virtually non-existent so we were well and truly stuck. We ventured out into nearby town of Oldham and eventually found a bookshop. Browsing through the music section I stumbled across a piano reduction of the show score to Mary Poppins. Contained in the score was a 32 bar, simple piano reduction of Step in Time... The rest, as they say, is history... This arrangement is not such a simple reduction. There are frequent changes of key, and time signatures throughout, but it has proven to be great fun to play and rehearse. Particularly with bands that are not the best 'sight readers'...

Published by Kevin P Holdgate (A0.791040). There's No Business Like Show Business is an Irving Berlin song, written for the 1946 musical Annie Get Your Gun and orchestrated by Ted Royal. The song, a slightly tongue-in-cheek salute to the glamour and excitement of a life in show business, is sung in the musical by members of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in an attempt to persuade Annie Oakley to join the production. It is reprised three times in the musical but for the purposes of the show that I made this arrangement for only 2 verses were required... a third verse could easily be added of course with appropriate lyrics.The song is also featured in the 1954 movie of the same name, where it is notably sung by Ethel Merman as the main musical number. The movie, directed by Walter Lang, is essentially a catalog of various Berlin's pieces, in the same way that Singin' in the Rain-which starred Donald O'Connor as well-was a collection of Arthur Freed songs. There was also a disco version of the song made during the 1970s, with Merman reprising her singing role in The Ethel Merman Disco Album. The song became one of Ethel Merman's standards and was often performed by her at concerts and on television.This is a simple arrangement of the song playable by all levels of ensemble

I arranged quite a few...Suitable for those summer small group jobs that are becoming ever more popular in the UK, particularly for lower section and non-competing bandsWe'll Meet Again is a 1939 British song made famous by singer Vera Lynn with music and lyrics composed and written by English songwriters Ross Parker and Hughie Charles. The song is one of the most famous of the Second World War era, and resonated with soldiers going off to fight as well as their families and sweethearts.The song gave its name to the 1943 musical film We'll Meet Again in which Dame Vera Lynn played the lead role. Lynn's recording is featured in the final scene of Stanley Kubrick's 1964 film Dr. Strangelove, and was also used in the closing scenes of the 1986 BBC television serial The Singing Detective. British director John Schlesinger used the song in his 1979 World War II film, Yanks, which is about British citizens and American soldiers during the military buildup in the UK as the Allies prepared for the D-Day Invasion.The obligato euphonium part can be omitted if required. The vocal line is also on the 1st Cornet line so this could be played as a standalone item.
