Gordon Cherry #4806569. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792347). Debussy wrote this five minute work in 1904 for a production of King Lear. The music is in A-B-A form beginning with a fanfare containing a combination of open and complex chords, giving it an ancient sound. The middle section is a relaxed intermezzo called Lear Asleep which is followed by a return to the fanfare. The music has been beautifully scored by Ralph Sauer for a 16-part large brass ensemble with timpani and percussion and is appropriate for advanced performers. Mr. Sauer has dedicated this work to the memory of Adolf Bud Herseth.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808632). Edmund Sears wrote the words to It Came Upon the Midnight Clear in 1849. A year later, the tune to which this carol is usually sung in the United States was written by Richard Storrs Willis. This arrangement features an introduction and three different versions of the carol. All throughout, the melody is handed is handed off from one instrument or group of instruments to another in novel but logical fashion, making it thoroughly fun to play. This arrangement was completed in 2012, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 4 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, can be reached at lessmith@ufl.edu. They are presented in a set of two books and include full four-part instrumental scores plus parts for 1st B flat trumpet, 2nd B flat trumpet, horn in F (with a separate optional part for horn in E flat), trombone and/or tuba. The tuba part is also optional because it either doubles the trombone part or plays an octave below. Both trombone and tuba parts appear on a single staff in the bass clef at concert pitch. The arrangements can be used with brass quartet, brass quintet or brass ensemble. There’s also an optional but useful simplified keyboard part intended for less experienced keyboard players. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. It could be used as the basis of an accompaniment which means that you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios.The arrangements are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a concert or service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. Also thank you to anyone I tortured with the many edits and editions before this was finalized. This piece is inspired by the following stanza from Paradise Lost: Whence and what art thou, execrable shape, That dar'st, though grim and terrible, advance Thy miscreated front athwart my way To yonder gates? Through them I mean to pass, That be assured, without leave asked of thee. Retire; or taste thy folly, and learn by proof, Hell-born, not to contend with spirits of Heaven. Here we see Lucifer, even after he has fallen so far, his wings bound by adamantine chains, still view himself with pride for being filled with the light of Heaven. He challenges Death, thinking himself superior to the foul (and more powerful) being. This piece explores the arrogance and emotions that I associate with the work as a whole, but particularly in Lucifer’s ego. The MP3 given here is just the render off of staffpad. Enjoy! Published by Randy A. Steinberg (A0.870434). This arrangement of a popular fanfare from Handel’s Water Music has been commonly played at church services and weddings for many years. The Water Music itself is a collection of pieces written at different times between 1717 and 1733. It is not clear as to the setting these were written for although most speculation seems to believe that these were pieces written for King George I during his many river outings. The collection of the pieces was assembled and published under the title Water Music in 1740. Although commonly written for small orchestra or larger brass ensembles, usually with two F Horns, this arrangement has been specially scored for a standard brass quintet instrumentation. In addition, the seldom played middle section has also been included. The fanfare’s popular melody is easily recognized by audiences and the work is still as exciting today as it was when first performed in the 18th century.

This publication includes full four-part instrumental scores plus parts for 1st B flat trumpet, 2nd B flat trumpet, horn in F (with a separate optional part for horn in E flat), trombone and/or tuba. The tuba part is also optional because it either doubles the trombone part or plays an octave below. Both trombone and tuba parts appear on a single staff in the bass clef at concert pitch. The arrangements can be used with brass quartet, brass quintet or brass ensemble. There’s also an optional but useful simplified keyboard part intended for less experienced keyboard players. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible.
