Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767268). As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The first four songs form a kind of introductory 'scena', which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. A little later, there is a set of 6 songs which he grouped together under the title Sestina. A Sestina is a complex poem made up of 6 stanzas each of 6 verses with rules regarding hoe the last line of the first verse is repeated. Obviously, we are not using the lyrics, but we need to be aware of the structure so that when the music reappears we can treat it appropriately. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres, despite the fact that all of the lyrics deal with loss of one kind or another. Monteverdi uses some very close dissonances to describe death and release. Often with wrenching results for the harmony.Please note, there are two extra parts for No.13, which is for 7 voices. Part 6 is an Alto voice (Horn/Alto Sax/Clarinet) and part 7 is a tenor voice (Trombone/Baritone/Tenor Sax/Euphonium).

There’s no doubt that this is one of the saddest and yet beautiful works ever, The Urlicht from Mahler’s 2nd Symphony in C minor for alto voice and alternatively here for Flugel solo. I arranged this 14 years ago for a dear friend trumpeter of mine who passed before his time and a favourite of his.I discovered Mahler 2 at the age of 16 and like Kaplin, it has been a journey of understanding and study for me sifting through Mahler’s own handwritten score at times and through his letters at the time of composing which on and off was near 20 years! The recording you will here attached is by The Fairey Band (from my album with them It's Not Unusual worldofbrass) conducted by Frank Renton and sung by one of the most beautiful alto voices in this land, Margaret McDonald. I’ve no doubt in my mind this arrangement works 100% hence me including the recording itself. Alternatives within the score are Picc A tpt in lieu of Sop, the solo line flg instead of mezzo voice, vibraphone instead of harp.

Hope PrevailsThe composition consists of six movements and is for a Brass Quintet with guest instrumentalists of Oboe, Violin, Viola and Soprano voice.The piece explores the moods that many encounter as they go through life from loneliness through to elation. the composers brother experienced these extreme emotions and it resulted in him taking his own life. This piece is dedicated to his memory.The MP3 contains a very short extract from each movement that is a direct download from computer composition software and is therefore not of great quality.The composer is looking for a group to record this piece. Please get in touch if you wish to be part fo a collaborative project perhaps as a school, college, university or other group.The Struggle of the night - 4:09 in length:The first movement commences with sonorous chord sequences and quickly moves to a lively section. The piece incorporates the tune of the Welsh National Anthem along with the hymn tune Cwm Rhondda. The movement moves between the despair and loneliness of the night that one can feel, even when sleeping next to a close partner, and the racing desperation of the mind, whereby patriotic affiliations will calm the soul at these times. the movement finishes with the tune of Land of my father's resonating but even this is of no comfort, and the troubled mind lies awake and the movement finishes with a flurry of discord.The Solitude - 5.34 in length:The movement begins with a haunting melody led by the Oboe. the Horn soon joins in as do other instruments of the quintet. A simple Gregorian type rhythm and chant passes through the quintet with the Oboe leading the movement.Crescendos and attacked notes give the piece a rise and fall showing the mood of the soul that alternates between a calm and a peak of mood as sleep is hard to come by and a restless state is invoked.It appears that the oboe will be leading the soul into peace yet, at the last moment, the quintet joins in with chords of attack and crescendo followed by a sharp diminuendo to end the piece.The soul has sought solace, yet, all they find is loneliness.Brad's Broadcast - 3:01 in length:The restless soul awakes after a restless night. The world is full of voices, advice, motivation and answers.In this lively movement, the soul searches for solace and finds sense from some sources, yet, the cacophony of contrary advice and the nature of some disciples of business and life coaches becomes confusing. there are some real gems of advice available, but, the noise of others drowns out the sense and sanity.The soul manages to find some humour in the forums and media, they smile, but the relief is short lived.The movement ends with all voices descending away in a glissando and silence is restored.By His Own Hand - 4:26 in length:This movement reflects the desperation of the soul. they have sought solace, humour has passed them by, they do not feel that they can continue to live.The piece starts with a cadenza played by a viola. A violin soon duets in this Jewish styled lament.Throughout the movement the brass are spartan, reflecting the confusion of the soul. The ability to cling onto the world and to continue living is a losing battle.The waves of the lament increase in their presence, but not velocity, for the depressed souul is reaching the point of no return and of no choice.They will soon depart from the world by their own hand. The end ofthe movement is a descent and a unifying discordant sound as the soul leaves.Dreaming of Heaven - 2:31 in length:The soul is now rising and an ancient Celtic tune accompanies the soul in the form of a Soprano voice singing words of hope and light.The soul's path is lit and the ancient bell of.

The first four songs form a kind of introductory scena, which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. The second of these is O Teseo, Teseo mio which translates as O Theseus, my Theseus. The young man is pleading with his lover to tell him that she wants him and he is referred to as Theseus in order to fit in with the common mythology of the time. Just as the women have Arianna, Daphne and Clorinda, so the men have Theseus, Clovis and various other mythological fantasies. This song, No 10 starts with the line Here Tirsi laughed and wriggled under the two(twin?) stars of the beautiful Clorinda I think you get the picture! We can see plenty of musical laughing and wriggling in the music with dotted rhythms and semiquaver runs. The top two voices are Clorinda (doing a fair amount of wriggling herself) while the bottom two take the part of Tirsi. There are places where all four voices give vent to an exclamation and where, presumably, the two lovers had to stop for breath! The original incorporates a very basic continuo part, which I have shared between the resting voices. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres.

The songs starting from no 8 form a set of 6 to which Monteverdi gave a separate title Sestina Within this set of songs Monteverdi creates a little dramatic episode which foreshadows many of the developments that we find in his early operas: Monody/recitative, dialogue between chorus and soloist, a tendency to give the high parts strong melodic lines and a clear division of the roles of the singers. For the time being, until someone asks, I am not going to release the separate songs from Sestina individually as some of them are a little short. A sestina is a complicated verse form of six stanzas each of six lines with rules about repeating the last line of the first stanza. The poetic form is of little use to us as instrumentalists, but the dramatic mourning, cries of anguish and the feelings of loss embodied in the music will come through regardless of the lack of words. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres.

The Euphonium and Tuba parts share a lot the same notes also, to help give the piece a solid bottom. That said, this piece can be played with only 5 parts, but it sounds great with 8. Sweetwater Brass Press #3631645. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808685).   What is a Rumpus? Most definitions include words such as noisy disturbance, commotion and uproar. Sort of like the sounds from a group of neighborhood children in the days before play dates, private lessons and organized kids’ sports. These sounds were part and parcel of the games they played, games that originated years, even centuries, before and involved high energy levels and top-of-their-voices counting, chanting or singing (with an occasional Nyah-nyah nyah-nyah nyah nyah thrown in for good measure!). Rowdy and raucous, indeed!  This composition is one that will entertain both adults (who, after all, are just grown-up children!) and youngsters. Like children at play, it races right along. In one 6-minute work, it incorporates tunes of eleven children’s game and campfire songs: Michael Finnegan; Ring a Ring o’ Roses; Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star; London Bridge; Hickory Dickory Dock; Three Blind Mice; John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt; My Pony Boy; Old MacDonald Had A Farm; The Farmer in the Dell and Bingo. And, again, like children at play, there is fun, humor and a surprise at every turn.  A Rowdy, Raucous Rumpus is a hoot to play. At a cut-time tempo of 132 and with 14(!) changes of key, it keeps all five musicians on their toes. And busy: on the Tuba part, there are V.S. (turn the page quickly) indications on the bottom of 6 of the 8 pages, 5 for Trombone and Horn in F, 3 for Trumpet 2, and 2 for Trumpet 1. In Bingo, the last tune, the group intermittently stops playing and claps or foot-taps loudly (which is a good spot for audience participation!). On the audio clip, this is indicated with a click (actually, a tambourine sound).  There are a few high notes scattered throughout. Trumpet plays B above its staff once and A a number of times. Trumpet 2 has one A above its staff. Trombone has one F above its staff. Tuba has one G in the top space of its staff.
