Published by Phillip Lawrence (A0.883769). I recently published Romeo & Juliet Tchiakovsky which is a big bridge musically technically and and needs a big chunk of stamina. Before I did this there was another work on my mind of an opposite challenge for band in the orch rep dep.An impressionist work of great delicacy, subtle beyond belief, the fabric is fragile like lace with a feeling of transparency and lucidity and must move as if played by one person, colour and timbre, light, lithe, the orchestration a masterpiece, utilising fx from all dep’s often at ppp and most difficult to replicate at all for brass band.And, it’s a fair cop! The purists outsiders will say that this is the last piece that should be arranged for a brass band. So why arrange the greatest impressionist work ever written, for Brass Band?Well, because it’s there, and I believe it can be played with the above requirements by band. The work was written in the summer of 1894, and finished in the September. Three months later in December the Societe Nationale de Musique conducted by Gustave Doret with Marcel Moyse playing the opening flute solo gave the first performance. The concept of the piece was built around a poem by Stephan Mallarme, who describes the wishes and dreams of a faun in the heat of a summer afternoon. Prep for tres difficile?

I was at college in the late 70’s (RNCM) and the brass dep fave groups were EWF (and Maynard), we formed a band, brass and rhythm section called Brass Injection where the members of the band arranged EWF/Maynard/Blood Sweat and Tears/Steele Dan and the like. (5 tpts, 4 troms, tuba, rhythm section). We colleges giggled, Manchester gigged, and after 4 years we ended up in Ronnie Scott’s. In The Stone seemed to be a must for brass band and difficult dictation and I don’t like to leave things out or simplify. So I’m starting an EWF collection with September and Fantasy to come soon. The semiquaver syncs will take some time to give it the relaxed feel especially in the bass dep. Here’s to the memory of Brass Injection and RNCM days.

Versatile Brass 'Old Time Favourites' CollectionLeaning on a Lamp-post is a popular song written by Noel Gay and best known in the version by George Formby.It was first performed in the 1937 film Feather Your Nest, in contrasting styles by Val Rosing and George Formby. The film's plot revolves around Formby, a gramophone record technician, hearing Rosing record the song but then breaking the master disc and substituting his own voice. Formby recorded the song for Regal Zonophone Records on 5 September 1937, and it became one of his most popular and best-remembered songs. The sheet music for the song was published by Cinephonic Music Co Ltd. of London, at two shillings.A version by Herman's Hermits, credited as Leaning on the Lamp Post, reached No. 9 on the US Hot 100 in 1966. Key was inspired by the large U.S. flag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, known as the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort during the U.S. victory. His Angry Birds theme is perhaps his most famous work.Pulkkinen was born in Helsinki. At the age of 6 he started studying piano and composed his first song at the age of 12. He was interested in the computer music demoscene and started making music with tracker software under the name ArtZ. He won many music competitions and made his first big public album to accompany a freeware game named Starfight VI: Gatekeepers in 1999. Ari has never studied music composition academically.In 2003 he was hired as in-house audio director to game development company Frozenbyte Inc. Where he made the original soundtracks and sound design for video games Shadowgrounds, Shadowgrounds: Survivor and Trine. In his spare time Ari earned diplomas in Professional Audio Design and Producing and Further Education for Producers and Leads of the Finnish Game Industry with Adulta, and Music Technology with Sibelius Academy. After quitting Frozenbyte in 2008 (though he continues to have a professional relationship with them), Ari started his own sound production company AriTunes. Since then he has made original soundtrack and sound design for over twenty projects, including video games such as Angry Birds, Dead Nation, Trine 2, Outland and Super Stardust HD. Ari releases his music through his own label AriTunes.On 2 September 2011 in Video Game Heroes Concert, Angry Birds Theme was played by London Philharmonic Orchestra. This is the first time Ari's music was played by a full live orchestra.On 4 October 2011, Ari won the Best Finnish Game Developer in 2011 Award due to his contribution in the Finnish game industry.
