Procession of the Nobles (Cortége) was written in 1889 as part of the opera Mlada. The Procession is the only part of the opera that is still performed and is the introduction to Act II, which begins with a town festival. The colorful scene bursts to life with a rousing fanfare by the brass.

It may also be performed by a double/triple brass quintet, a larger brass ensemble, or the brass section of a concert band/orchestra, with percussion. For the sake of simplicity, the various, advanced cadenzas near the end of the original fanfare have been omitted. The duration is just under 2 minutes.(According to Wikipedia: The film, made on a budget of just over $1 million, was a sleeper hit; it earned $225 million in global box office receipts, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1976... The work for advanced performers is 5 minutes in length and has five slow sections and three fast sections alternating throughout. Pugh uses dissonance and unison as a way of adding and releasing tension throughout the work. Pugh writes that this work is his most personal composition and deals with his search as an adopted child for his birth mother. The work begins in-utero and through all of the complexities of relationships between the child and others in his life. Parts are supplied for C & B-flat Trumpet, Horn and Trombone. This 5-minute work is written for very advanced performers.

Most of the higher and more difficult licks are concentrated in the top 4 parts, and the 1st part requires particular skill (leading me to mark this arrangement's difficulty as advanced intermediate), but each trumpeter involved will have have at least one moment of guitar-solo glory.
