This is a three movement pantonal work for unaccompanied solo violin. Each movement has it's own personality and character. The first begins freely and expressively in the beginning and builds momentum to a somewhat sporadic series of various motivic manipulations, ending in an aggressive, accelerating repetition of the motif, which can be heard in various places of the following two movements. The second movement, somewhat more quirky, is meant to provoke a sense of temporary confusion and disorientation. The pizzicato open G in the first few measures is the disorienting element, interrupting the melody every few beats. The rest of the piece gradually becomes more and more playful before slowing down as if unsure what lies ahead.The third movement is the shortest of the three. It begins very eerily and slightly chilling with a downward glissando on artificial and natural harmonics. It almost seems as if a character in a story is lost in an unfamiliar place, trying to find the way home. As the movement progresses, it builds in expression and intensity the way a light in the distance becomes closer as one walks closer to it. From this climax, to the end, it becomes gradually softer and slower, mimicking the burning embers of a dying fire, reminiscing of warmth and comfort.

It was included in a book of canons and rounds by British composer Philip Hayes in 1878 called, The Muses Delight. American artist Don McLean recorded it on his album American Pie under the title Babylon. Isaac Wardell set new lyrics from Isaiah 53 with in his song By His Wounds. Here is an arrangement of this tune for violin and piano.The violin part is at a difficulty Level 6. It includes passages in 1st - 6th positions. There are sixteenth note arpeggiated figures and some 4 note rolled chords that will give a challenge to any player. The mournful tune will also give players an opportunity for bow control development and work with the long phrases this tune carries. A simplified part is included that can be used with the same accompaniment. It is set at a difficulty Level 4. It uses 1st and 3rd position with a 4th finger extension for harmonic E6. The 4-note chords have been simplified to using a grace note before the beat and then long arpeggios have been simplified to include only 1 beat of arpeggios per measure.

There is a good reason for studying the odd-numbered positions first. The body of the instrument and the crook of the neck provide solid reference points for finding these positions. Hamonically, first, third, and fifth position outline the triad, the foundation of Western tonal music. The fingering of fifth position matches first position, making it easy to learn. It is unfortunate that this focus on third and fifth position has often been at the cost of any discussion of the even positions: 2, 4, 6, and 8. I first heard Irina Muresanu, maybe five years ago, with the Boston Trio in Jordan Hall at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. I was impressed from the very first note she played on her violin. Subsequently I heard her in a chamber music duo recital with pianist Ya-fei Chuang at the Harvard-Epworth Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I remember saying to myself, Wow, she has a big, warm sound! One day I would love to write a violin concerto for her! Last year I heard her play the Brahms and the Tchaikovsky violin concerti on separate occasions with the Lexington Symphony and the Boston Classical Orchestra. It was that wow factor again … When I proposed to write a violin concerto for Max Hobart and the Boston Civic Symphony Orchestra, he asked me who I would like to feature as the soloist. I said Irina Muresanu. Max said it was a fabulous choice since he has been thinking of engaging Irina to play with the Civic for some time. Over the past summer I indulged myself in a buying spree of scores and CD recordings of violin concerti. Many composers’ works stood out: concerti by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Stravinsky, Elgar, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Saint-Saëns, Dvorak, Paganini, Glazunov, Dohnanyi, Nielsen, Spohr, etc. And of course, I did not ignore the gems by Bach and Mozart! The listening to and research of all these concerti masterpieces were quite overwhelming, to say the least. So, by the time I was ready to begin work on my Concerto, I had to put all those scores and CDs aside and begin to find the music in my head. I must confess that it took a while. But eventually I found the seed that brought everything together. And within six weeks, between late September and early November, I completed the short score of the concerto. The orchestration took approximately ten days and the complete work was done on November 21st, 2009. My Violin Concerto, opus 129, is in two parts. Each part consists of a slow section that is followed by a fast one. Part I: Largo, Moderato, Allegro ma non troppo. Part II: Largo, Adagio, Prestissimo. Enjoy!! Another great thing (for multi-instrumental arrangements) is that I include cue lines on each part, so that every player in the ensemble can see one other person’s music at the same time. This is so amazingly useful and has saved countless performances in the past. If someone skips a beat or misses a measure, you can now see where they are and reconnect!
