Vivaldi, Largo from Winter (The Four Seasons) Advanced Intermediate LevelUnaccompanied Violin part: 1 pageTime: 2:00Yes, making music with others is one of the best things about being a violinist, and a string duo, trio or quartet is great for weddings and other private or corporate events.  But sometimes through constraints of availability / space / budget – or just for the thrill of it - we need to go it alone.  That’s when music for unaccompanied violin (not merely solo violin) comes into its own.Here’s the slow movement from Vivaldi's Winter concerto, from The Four Seasons, with the bass line folded into the violin part. I've recorded this with eighth notes, but think of them more as indications than full-length quavers, so you can take care of the upper line. I've written in some ornamentation as well - but feel free to improvise, if you're that way inclined!If you like this, please check out my other arrangements for unacompanied violin, including Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Classic Jazz.

Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

It was written as a part of his ViolinFutura commissioning project. The missionof the project seeks to commission pieces connected to the deep historical traditions ofsolo violin literature. The work takes its inspiration thus from these historical works and alsofrom a brief poem by American poet Elizabeth Kirschner.The work begins with slow, melodic music in firm tonality. A fast, dancing section emergesand becomes gradually wilder – abandoning its tonal grounding through chromaticalternation. After this fast music stops, the initial slow music returns to conclude the piece,with darker interjections now inserted into the tonal texture before ending in quiet repose.

One of the most iconic guitar solos of all time, written by one of the most influential guitarists in history, and now arranged for violin!!As a violinist who has extensively studied both the classical & rock genres, I made it my goal to be as faithful to EVH's original performance as possible, while also making this version more adaptable to the different virtuosic techniques available to violinists. We may not be able to tap out those signature arpeggios with 2 hands, but arpeggiating them with the bow creates a similar texture with a distinctly more violin-friendly approach! I've also used octave transpositions and re-voiced some of the chords to make them more adaptable to the violin's range without feeling chopped up.The result: a fresh take on this timeless solo that can be performed on any standard violin. No need for extra strings or electronics (though I'll admit, it will probably sound pretty awesome on an electric violin...) and no need to re-tune your instrument. This version is written a half-step higher than the original recording in concert A. Int.: Eya Grimonia.Even the simplest things need a solid internal structure that supports their discourse and transcends it. This work was a birthday present to an 11-year-old girl who was born on the 11th of the month 11, and is built on her onomastic numbers [4, 5, 5] which generate the harmonic and melodic basis together with those of the composer [9, 7], those of her mother [6, 5, 7] and those of her brother [5, 5, 5]. Thus, the first movement, “Dawnâ€, is structured in 11 sections (it is a gift from the age of 11) of 4+5+5 bars. “Reading†has 9 sections of 4 bars and the melodic-harmonic sequence is formed by the complex [4, 5, 6, 7, 9], so we all find ourselves involved in the reading plot. The third movement, “Slowlyâ€, in 5/4, a reference to the names of the girl and her brother, has 3 sections of 5+5+5 bars; the brother’s turning round endlessly while the girl thinks about the turns that the world takes. It is probably recommended for Advanced players if at tempo and advanced intermediate players if taken slower. The audio file is voiced in violin. The YouTube link is voiced in violin. I think we erred and have the violin playing off the trumpet page. There are transciptions for recorder/oboe, trumpet, and violin. This sheet music listing is of the violin transcription.
