An aubade is the twin of a night-time serenade; an aubade is a love song originating amongst the medieval Provençal troubadours, depicting the morning departure between two lovers. An aubade is a song in honor of the slow cosmic percolation of a late summer morning. On a personal level, the composer is reminded of his own experiences camping in Northern Canada as a young man–a simpler and less demanding time. This piece formally begins the series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies–his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!–though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his first symphony; I envisioned, once my piece concludes, his beautiful drawn-out chords presenting themselves–the dawn of his special genius.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

After playing hundreds of events throughout the years I have finally put some of my personal arrangements down on paper. This version of the Star-Spangled Banner is both fun to play and enjoyable to listen to. There is a balance of jazzy chords without losing the character of the piece. This is both a challenging work to practice a multitude of finger patterns and a great performance piece.
For those who are still working on chords and double-stops, the three-note chords can be altered to just playing the top two bringing the difficulty down.

The first theme, which also lends the piece its title, comes from the Kol Nidre declaration, recited during the evening service on Yom Kippur. In Bruch's setting of the melody, the solo instrument imitates the rhapsodic voice of the cantor who chants the liturgy in the synagogue. The second subject of the piece is quoted from the middle section of Isaac Nathan's arrangement of O Weep for Those that Wept on Babel's Stream, a lyric which was penned by Lord Byron in his collection Hebrew Melodies. This arrangement is faithful to the original and is ideally suited to the Viola as the solo instrument .

It has long been accepted pedagogical practice that, after first position, the next positions a violin or viola student learns are third and fifth positions. There is good reason for studying the odd-numbered positions first. The body of the and the crook of the neck provide solid reference points for finding these positions. Harmonically, first, third, and fifth positions outline the triad, the foundation of Western tonal music. The fingering for fifth position matches first position, making it easy to learn. It is unfortunate that this focus on third and fifth position has often been at the cost of any discussion of the even positions: 2, 4, 6, and 8. This is evident in the traditional etudes and study material available for violin and viola. With new tonal demands of twentieth and twenty-first century music, knowledge and familiarity with the entire finger board is essential.Like the relationship between first and fifth position, the same relationship can be found between second and sixth positions and fourth and eighth positions. Appalachia Waltz is a piece composed by Mark O’Connor for unaccompanied violin which gained fame as the title track from the album featuring O’Connor, Yo-Yo Ma, and Edgar Meyer. The Sony Classical release remained for many months in the top ten of Billboard Magazine’s Classical music chart. O’Connor originally composed the piece as a solo for unaccompanied violin in 1993 before he brought it to the trio when compiling material for their album. Here, adapted to viola, “Appalachia Waltz” is very similar to the violin version O’Connor performs in his solo concerts. With the musical influences coming from Scandinavian and Appalachian folk fiddling, it is one of O’Connor’s most beautiful pieces. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.
