My Variations on St. Christopher (Beneath the Cross of Jesus) require a wide range of technical prowess from relatively easy (Variation II) to advanced (Variation VII). The Theme presents the unadorned hymn tune with an original 4-part harmonization. Variation I is another 4-part setting but with a more rhythmically active acompaniment in the lower voices. Variation II, a duo for the hands alone, is in the dominant key where the tune is accompanied by an unrelenting stream of triplets. Variation III is a 3-voice canon in which the tenor and pedal bass imitate the soprano, though with a certain amount of intervallic freedom. Variation IV is a trio in which the middle voice presents an ornamented version of the hymn tune. Variation V is a brief fughetta, while Variation VI presents the tune in the pedals against quietly undulating triplets in the hands. The final variation (entitled Introduction and Fugal Fantasy) is by far the most challenging and employs considerable chromaticism toward the end. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangememts of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

He wrote the mass for the Cathedral at Reims, where he served as a canon and a permanent clergy member. According to a rubric at the Cathedral, it would have likely been performed for the Saturday Lady Mass. Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is significant in the history of music for several reasons: It is the first complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer that has survived. It is a unified mass, meaning the composer selected relevant chants for each section as the borrowed tenor. It was composed in four voices, which was unusual at the time. The texts of both Gloria and Credo are pretty lengthy. Therefore, Machaut set these movements in a style reminiscent of the earlier discant style, having short phrases, similar rhythmic motion in all parts, and a low ratio of notes per syllable of text, ending with long, rhapsodic sections for the final word, Amen. Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is a landmark in musical history, but it is far from being avant-garde merely for its uniqueness. It is considered to be a culmination of the musical style of the Ars Nova period, which was characterized by complex polyphonic textures and rhythmic innovations. Over the past couple of years I have written a number of film music transcriptions on and for the organ of the Royal Albert Hall in London. While the transcriptions are written with this organ in mind, often calling for specific colours such as the bass drum, carillons or tubular bells, they are adaptable on a number of different instruments and I’ve loved tweaking them in order to play them on organs all across the world. I hope you enjoy playing them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them! One of the soundtracks that I get asked to perform most regularly is Test Drive by John Powell. This is one of the earlier transcriptions I wrote, and I often use it as a piece to illustrate the difference between different organs. It’s quite useful to have one piece to use as a comparison point, so I post little videos of this wherever I’m playing to demonstrate how radically different the same piece of music can sound depending on the kind of instrument. For me, this piece feels like an instant serotonin boost. There is a great crescendo where you get to take the organ from relatively quiet to earth-shatteringly loud over the course of about 30 seconds, and I always say that playing that part feels a bit like flying a dragon! - Anna Lapwood

Playtime: also about a cat, the composer's own cat who is playful and rushes around the house but occasionally stopping to pummel the soft furnishings. 4. Early Evening in Camden Town: a more serious and sad piece - in 3-3-2 time. It is an evocation of the poor folk in Camden and their dreams of what could be, if only….. It was originally a song, which the composer wrote when he was living in London, based on a poem by fellow Londoner Sandra Erös The streets are part of a toy town, waiting to be played with…. 5. The Bishop's Dance: a curious and comical piece in 11 time (3, 3, 3, 2). It comes from the legend of Robin Hood, in which Robin meets the bishop of Hereford, who had hoped to get the better of him, but Robin prevails and forces him to dance. The clumsy attempts of the ungainly Bishop to obey Robin's commands cause great merriment among the merry men To quote our vicar, Rev Barbara, after the recital For me music paints a picture, and, for that, I have got this picture of someone going for a stroll in their village and then they came across a very old cat wandering down the street imaging it could catch birds but never catching them. And then it would lie down for a sleep and dream of the days when it was a kitten.... It was a very reflective programme and turns our mind about What for the Autumn, what do we need to do next.. it really did fit in with the mood of the year, as we turn towards building up the programme for next year... So thank you, it gave us time to reflect in a very beautiful manner.... I vividly remember watching the film for the first time with my family, hearing the music and feeling an incredible emotional response to it. I wanted to work out how the music worked, so I sat in bed with a torch and manuscript paper, writing out the harmony, and trying to understand how Hans Zimmer achieved such emotion through repetition and orchestration. The piece begins softly, building in volume and intensity to a dramatic ending on full organ. The passacaglia theme is the first seven notes of the hymn tune placed into triple metre. Bars 72-76 introduce two cruciform motifs; 4-note ideas in which lines drawn between the outer two and inner two notes bisect each other to form a cross.
