As the tune is occasionally sung to other hymns at various times of the year, this prelude and fugue is also suitable for other times of the year.

The opening movement is composed in a sonata form and consists of three sections: exposition, development and recapitulation.The exposition begins with a stately introduction that consists of pointed rhythms. After the opening theme has been stated, there are two sections that employ canonic imitation of motives at measures 9 to 12 and 21 to 32. The closing theme depicts a bugle passage that is imitative in nature. The development section usually states thematic materials from the exposition section, but it is not always the case in some compositions. Take, for example, the middle section (measures 42 to 83) that contrasts the opening theme in its lyricism; its melody is written in the stepwise manner and is imitated in the pedal part. The recapitulation is a section where the restatement of the main theme and other sections, including the extended version of the bugle theme, recur after concluding the middle section of the sonata form. The piece ends triumphantly in a FFF passage.The work is educational in that it teaches students the sections that make up a sonata form. This piece is suitable for recital use.

It was premiered on August 22, 2021 by Ethan Neal at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity in Georgetown, KY.Solemn Fanfare has three main ideas or themes: the opening fanfare material and two hymns: Christ the Victorious (RUSSIAN HYMN) and Be Still, My Soul (FINLANDIA). The piece is grandiose throughout and is meant to express the triumph of victory over cancer, whether in this life or the next. The solo trumpet presents RUSSIAN HYMN in an embellished and rhythmically altered manner within the flourishes of the opening and closing sections. In the middle section, FINLANDIA provides the strong chordal foundation above which the solo trumpet adds its triumphant yet sometimes dissonant fanfares, recalling the struggle and the pain that are part of the journey.

Although the suggested registration is for three manuals, the piece can easily be played on two manuals, e.g. with the solo played on a trumpet stop (or 8 4 22/3 2 diapasons if there is no trumpet stop) and the accompaniment played on 8 &4 diapasons (or 8 diapason & 4 gemshorn) on the second manual coupled to the pedals. My Prelude on the hymn tune Revive Us Again (We Praise Thee O God) was conceived for a three-manual organ and has a somewhat challenging pedal part. The harmonic idiom reflects the influence of certain 20th century techniques (such as building chords by fourths), which create a sound world that, while still tonal, embraces somewhat greater dissonance than traditional practice allowed. Modern ears though are accustomed to, and even enjoy, such sounds. The introduction and interludes are based upon a rhythmic motive taken from the hymn tune, which itself is treated canonically at one point. In another instance, even two different phrases are vertically combined. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.
