Lili of St. Luke'sbyFran OlsenIn 1990, a small black and white spotted dog, who had been found wandering, abused and sick in Surry County, Virginia, was scheduled to be put down by the Surry SPCA as unadoptable. Â Three placements had failed because the young female was too afraid of the people. Â Her last chance was Richard Lee Austin, curator of Historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, Virginia. Â Austin had reluctantly agreed to look at the small spoodle. Â He had just lost a beloved Pekingese of 18 years and did not want to go through the pain of another loss. Â Lili, however, immediately seemed to know that this was her person, came directly to him and won his heart. Â It was a mutual love affair.Lili went eagerly to work with Dick at the Gift Shop of Historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, Virginia, for the next 11 years. Â She was gracious and never intrusive with the visitors. Â Small children were able to approach Lili without fear. Â She seemed to understand that she needed to be quite still with them.In 2000, Lili became the star of her own book, Lili of St. Luke's: Â The Blessing of the Animals. Â Written by Fran Olsen, a volunteer at the church, and illustrated by Buttons Boggs, the charming book tells the story of Lili's desire to go to church. Â The animals in the church yard scoff at her. Â She finally succeeds in going to church for the annual Blessing of the Animals service which commemorates the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. Â Since the book was published many children have come to the church to have their picture taken with Lili.Mrs. Olsen, who is also the publisher, has donated a dollar from the sale of each book to be shared with Historic St. Luke's Church and three area humane societies with which Lili has been associated. Â Contributions in the first six months of publication were $1200.Lili died on June 7, 2001, from cancer. Â A week before she died, she made a personal appearance at a local elementary school. Â As always, she was gracious and gentle, even though later it was apparent that she was deathly ill. Â A bronze statute is planned to honor the gentle spoodle and will be placed at the church so children can continue to have their picture taken with her. Â This elegy was commissioned for performance at the annual Blessing service.

Though appropriate for Pentecost there is no direct connection to the scripture readings or sacramentary prayers for that Feast. The composition was written in the early years succeeding Vatican II (October 11, 1962 – December 8, 1965), a time of creative freedom. The language is period specific to that time, yet the music is universal.Rehearsal recommendation:The verse text is notated in consistent eighth-notes. Used as Easter prelude and postlude in different years, this composition uses this hymn as the primary hymn to include first line in canon but also intertwines Lo, In the Grave He Lay using some pedal double counterpoint during plus The Strife Is O'er with all three melodies involved during the ending to include simultaneous play of first lines of two hymns.. This 7.00 minute composition is somewhat challenging but not greatly difficult. A great blend of classical structure while using hymns people know. Very, very well received after played as prelude. This arrangement of Elgar's, Pomp and Circumstance March, No. 1, a perennial favorite for graduation ceremonies, is here abridged for use as a postlude, recital encore, etc. Pomp and Circumstance Marches, Op. 39, are a series of five marches for orchestra composed by Sir Edward Elgar. The first four were published between 1901 and 1907, when Elgar was in his forties; the fifth was published in 1930, a few years before his death; and a sixth, compiled posthumously from sketches, was published in 1956 and in 2005–2006. They include some of Elgar's best-known compositions.

Toccata & Fugue for Organ (2018)Composed by Aris AntoniadesRunning time: approx. 7' 50'' Writing for Organ always seemed like a very distant dream for me. Born and raised in Cyprus, an isolated Mediterranean island-state in Europe where the religious musical tradition (Greek Orthodox Christianity) relies solely on voices (no instruments used during services), I never had access to an Organ. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, there’s not a single Organ in my entire country. The first time I ever saw one was during my college years in New York – and it was love at first sight! I was fascinated by its sound capabilities, its mechanism, and the sheer skill required to play it. You can, therefore, understand how thrilled I am to have had the opportunity to write for this great instrument. I would like to sincerely thank Shannon Murphy and Austin Philemon for believing in my work, and for commissioning this piece. Both the Toccata and the Fugue are based on the same (but altered) motivic materials. The Toccata is a piece that was inspired by the idea that life is a continuous marathon, represented by the ‘mechanical’ sixteenth-note ostinato figure which never stops – despite the contrapuntal obstacles that are thrown within its path. The motive, however, does transform and adapt along the way, in order to make the best of the situation. The Fugue, on the other hand, represents the cerebral aspect of life: the concept of choices. The ostinato motive of the Toccata has now morphed into the subject of the Fugue, which will be attacked by some violent chromatic enemies.
