This is one of a suite of organ pieces composed by David W Solomons performed by David Carlston Williams Registrations are as suggested by the performer. (the sound sample is from the CD, available from this site) The suggested order for this suite is: 1. Passacaglia: based on an ostinato passage in 3 time. The idea behind the passacaglia relates to the origin of the word, it is basically a gentle stroll down the street (pasar la calle in Spanish, which was converted into Passacaglia in Italian) 2. Dorina: a descriptive piece in Dorian mode based on a song about a cat, from the aptly named village of Chattevoix, who stalks, but never catches, a little bird. 3. Playtime: also about a cat, the composer's own cat who is playful and rushes around the house but occasionally stopping to pummel the soft furnishings. 4. Early Evening in Camden Town: a more serious and sad piece - in 3-3-2 time. It is an evocation of the poor folk in Camden and their dreams of what could be, if only….. It was originally a song, which the composer wrote when he was living in London, based on a poem by fellow Londoner Sandra Erös The streets are part of a toy town, waiting to be played with…. 5. The Bishop's Dance: a curious and comical piece in 11 time (3, 3, 3, 2). It comes from the legend of Robin Hood, in which Robin meets the bishop of Hereford, who had hoped to get the better of him, but Robin prevails and forces him to dance. The clumsy attempts of the ungainly Bishop to obey Robin's commands cause great merriment among the merry men To quote our vicar, Rev Barbara, after the recital For me music paints a picture, and, for that, I have got this picture of someone going for a stroll in their village and then they came across a very old cat wandering down the street imaging it could catch birds but never catching them. And then it would lie down for a sleep and dream of the days when it was a kitten.... It was a very reflective programme and turns our mind about What for the Autumn, what do we need to do next.. it really did fit in with the mood of the year, as we turn towards building up the programme for next year... So thank you, it gave us time to reflect in a very beautiful manner.... UPC: 000308048834.These little interludes are designed for moments in the worship service when the organist is obliged to play short improvisations, yet feels improvisationally challenged. Whether the need is to cover the sound of shuffling feet as latecomers are seated or simply to establish a contemplative ambience, organists will find many uses for these short interludes in all keys. While some organ registrations and dynamic levels are suggested, the organist is advised to select stops that best suit the immediate moment of use. The majority of interludes in the service call for Flute or string celestas and other soft stops. A few of these pieces also present possibilities for using fuller or brighter combinations. It is hoped that this collection will serve well when there is a sudden need for the organist to provide (as a colleague so apply puts it)ecclesiastical traveling music.

The selection of postludes during the Lenten season is always a challenging one, particularly when searching for hymn-based works. This compilation of ten arrangements by ten arrangers seeks to alleviate this challenge for the organist. This collection of extant works is eclectic in its selection of hymn tunes, textures, and general styles, while retaining the plaintive and reflective elements of Lent. Dynamic contrasts are also present with some beginning intimately and building to a strong finish, others are grandiose throughout.

Passacaglia: based on an ostinato passage in 3 time. The idea behind the passacaglia relates to the origin of the word, it is basically a gentle stroll down the street (pasar la calle in Spanish, which was converted into Passacaglia in Italian) 2. Dorina: a descriptive piece in Dorian mode based on a song about a cat, from the aptly named village of Chattevoix, who stalks, but never catches, a little bird. 3. Playtime: also about a cat, the composer's own cat who is playful and rushes around the house but occasionally stopping to pummel the soft furnishings. 4. Early Evening in Camden Town: a more serious and sad piece - in 3-3-2 time. It is an evocation of the poor folk in Camden and their dreams of what could be, if only….. It was originally a song, which the composer wrote when he was living in London, based on a poem by fellow Londoner Sandra Erös The streets are part of a toy town, waiting to be played with…. 5. The Bishop's Dance: a curious and comical piece in 11 time (3, 3, 3, 2). It comes from the legend of Robin Hood, in which Robin meets the bishop of Hereford, who had hoped to get the better of him, but Robin prevails and forces him to dance. The clumsy attempts of the ungainly Bishop to obey Robin's commands cause great merriment among the merry men To quote our vicar, Rev Barbara, after the recital For me music paints a picture, and, for that, I have got this picture of someone going for a stroll in their village and then they came across a very old cat wandering down the street imaging it could catch birds but never catching them. And then it would lie down for a sleep and dream of the days when it was a kitten.... It was a very reflective programme and turns our mind about What for the Autumn, what do we need to do next.. it really did fit in with the mood of the year, as we turn towards building up the programme for next year... So thank you, it gave us time to reflect in a very beautiful manner.... Over the past couple of years I have written a number of film music transcriptions on and for the organ of the Royal Albert Hall in London. While the transcriptions are written with this organ in mind, often calling for specific colours such as the bass drum, carillons or tubular bells, they are adaptable on a number of different instruments and I’ve loved tweaking them in order to play them on organs all across the world. I hope you enjoy playing them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them! When I was a teenager, my dad and brother would often choose the films we’d watch. When they chose Pirates of the Caribbean I was a bit sceptical at first because I thought it might be too scary, but I quickly fell in love with the film and its soundtrack – it became my favourite film series and I ended up listening to the soundtrack almost every day on the walk to and from school. In the films, the character of Davy Jones plays an iconic organ on his ship, the Flying Dutchman – I think it’s one of the most well-known organ references in contemporary cinema, and so it is one of my most requested pieces. I I also love the fact that Hans Zimmer includes a little nod to Bach’s Toccata in D minor, another piece which sits at the top of my request list. In the film, the start and end of this piece is played by a musical locket, perfectly replicated by the Celeste stop on the organ, although if a Celeste stop isn’t available then a soft 8’ flute would do the job!  - Anna Lapwood.

In addition to the trombone and organ parts, there is a treble clef part provided that can be used by a trumpet, baritone, or tenor sax player. This work for trombone and organ is part of the 2024 Suite for Trombone and Organ, which is geared toward the younger, less experienced player, with works that can be performed at church services and other occasions. This Festive March on the Old Hundredth is based on the hymn tune, known to most as Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow. It is written in joyful fashion, and could work well as a festive prelude or joyful postlude. The range is one that a typical high school player (or advanced middle schooler) could play, with rhythms well within the reach of players at that level. The solo part is well-supported by the organ part, with hopes that rehearsals can be minimal in putting this together for performance. There are two other movements to this 2024 Suite, both available on this site as well. Please give that young musician the chance to shine! Also included is a treble clef part that could be played by trumpet, treble clef baritone, or tenor sax.

Rather than compose on the computer as I usually do, I wrote by hand as I determined the best four-part canonic treatment for each of the phrases of the chant. Composing this was akin to assembling a puzzle, both in mindset (this note fits best here) and addictive quality (need to finish this now!). Originally conceived as a short organ piece, I quickly chose to add the English text from the Hymnal 1982 then text directly from the Liber Usualis, a Catholic book of Gregorian chants commonly used until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). This piece is similar in style to an Italian Renaissance canzona or early German Baroque kanon. It should be performed with performance practice of those eras in mind, including lifts after dotted notes, metric accents, and minimal vibrato, especially at cadences. It may be performed in alternatum with one of the choral versions (SATB English, SATB Latin, SSA/TTB Latin, or SSA/TTB English) or with a soloist(s) on the chant or as an organ solo. I have provided the first line of chant below and all six verses in Latin with translations on the next page. The SSA Latin version was adapted from the original SATB version for the women of the Hillcrest High School choral program under the direction of Dr. Khristi Motley in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It reduces the original four-voice setting to three voices without sacrificing any canonic entrances. Either the two-staff or single-staff version may be performed by solo organ. In the single-staff version, stem direction decisions were made primarily for readability, not to show voice leading. Refer to the four-part, two-staff version for voice leading questions.Also available as SSA/TTB in Latin or English. SATB Latin/English versions coming soon!
