It features two distinctive crescendos, the second one should lead to a full organ sound. I had the idea of that motif two years ago and just took notes of the first five or six measures. Some weeks ago I ran into these notes once again after I had forgotton them completely. Then in one creative evening I was able to write the whole piece. Never had been more in such a creative flow state of mind before. I hope this piece will find its audience. I love it very, very much.I created a video on YouTube if you want to see which stops I used to create the crescendos. But feel free to find your own perspective on registrations.Â

Alternatively, these compositions can also be used as postludes. Some of these are also suitable as preparation for the congregational song before the service. The numbers in the videos are examples of the hymn book of the New Apostolic Church.

Veni Emmanuel (composed 2022, duration ca. 5’ 10â€) builds on the mystery inherent in the season of Advent, the text that presents us with many different visions of Christ (God with us, Wisdom from on high, etc.), and in the ancient, minor-mode tune itself. There are two complete statements of the tune with its refrain, one quiet and sedate, the other loud and joyous. The rest of the piece is essentially a free fantasy, culminating in an enigmatic right-hand solo a dozen or so bars before the end. This piece is contemplative and moody, with plenty of opportunity for colourful registrations.

He was born in Speinshart, some 150 km from Nuremberg, but spent most of his life in Augsburg, where he worked as cathedral organist for two years. His only surviving music is a 1693 collection, Ars Magna Consoni et Dissoni, which includes toccatas, Magnificat versets and variations in south German style. Speth was born in Speinshart, Bavaria, to teacher Heinrich Speth and his wife Margareta (née Vichtl). Past scholars established that Speth must have received music lessons from the abbot of the Premonstratensian monastery at Speinshart, one Dominikus Lieblein, however, this has recently been disproven. Nothing is known about his life before 1692, when he applied for the position of organist of Augsburg Cathedral. The application, which contained Speth's compositions, was accepted, and he was appointed organist on 4 November 1692. The music he supplied with the application was published the next year in Augsburg as Ars magna Consoni et Dissoni. In the files of the cathedral administration there is a note from 1705 showing that Speth had also to work in the office of the cathedral chapter. The exact date of Speth's death is unknown, but there is a document that shows that in 1719, he still lived with his wife and a maidservant in Augsburg. The composer's only surviving work is the collection published in 1693 in Augsburg, Ars magna Consoni et Dissoni. The title may be a reference to Athanasius Kircher's famous book, Musurgia universalis, sive ars magna consoni et dissoni (1650). An early description of the work was included by Johann Gottfried Walther in his Musikalisches Lexicon; Walther claimed Speth only compiled the pieces but did not compose. This hypothesis is now generally considered false. Ars Magna contains music intended for organ or clavichord: 10 toccatas (subtitled Musicalische Blumen-Felder), 8 Magnificat settings, and three variation sets. The music has clearly traceable Italian influences, with direct borrowings: one of the variation sets is built on a theme by Bernardo Pasquini, there is also a passage from Bernardo Storace in the Spangioletta variation set, and a verset by Alessandro Poglietti (quinti toni no. 3). The influence of contemporary southern organists is also apparent, particularly that of Georg Muffat and Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer. The toccatas are unusually short for the genre; most consist of three (toccata-fugue-toccata) sections. There are some interesting features such as dynamic indications in Toccata quarta. The Magnificat settings are, like similar pieces by Johann Kaspar Kerll and others, short versets for alternatim practice.

The registration for this edition was devised in the Church of the Resurrection in Fürth. In medieval times much was made of things like numerology and words, and one day it was discovered that Ave (Hail) spelled backwards was Eva (an archaic spelling of Eve). Thus Ave Eva was Hail, Eve! and Mary was seen as a type of Eve. In other words, Ave Eva read the same forwards and backwards, giving us Hail Mary in both directions. This was seen as a miraculous sign and songs and poems were written about it. The piece given here is my original work for pipe organ, and following the lead of the title and history, it gives the descending figure F-E-D to provide the thematic material, developing into a canon-like style, then reverses the figure later to an ascending D-E-F, eventually playfully mixing both versions of the theme before exploding into an exciting end. The work itself is relatively easy to perform, with perhaps the exception of the duple-over-triplets passage near the end which may require a little more attention than the rest of the piece. For clarity of the lines I have suggested a Principal Chorus, with some contrast provided by passages using Flutes and soft Strings. Thank you for performing this work, and God bless!
