First published in 1958, this organ suite has four movements based on Gregorian Chants. The first three movements are derived from the introit, offertory and communion of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception— December 8th. The final movement is based on the Kyrie and the Dismissal from the Mass for Feasts of the Blessed Virgin (Beata Virgine) Missa Cum Jubilo. All are found in the Liber Usualis. An image of each chant precedes its corresponding movement in this score. The compositional style is tonal. It is representative of Sr. Theophane's earlier work though the Communion may have been written later than the other movements. Medium difficulty.

During my compositional preparation, I repeatedly found myself returning to this work. I had a number of different formal models in mind, but felt myself gravitating towards the rhapsodic character of toccata form so that my new composition for organ ultimately became a toccata developing from a pedal point on the fundamental note ’D’. As is appropriate to the volume of a large modern organ, my concept focuses on symphonic tonal layers whose suggestive maelstrom originates from the inner strength of repeating elements and their register- like augmentation, culminating in the unleashing of polyrhythmic progressions. This striking arrangement is a hugely rewarding piece to play on a large organ with a big Tuba or other solo reed! This is truly epic music which can be lifted to a whole extra dimension in a large cathedral or concert hall. The arrangement is both engaging and playable - even the central toccata section sits nicely under the fingers of the average player. The concept behind this particular arrangement is a rocket being charged for lift-off and then finally breaking free of the lauchpad and heading skywards. So the piece eventually ends in a striking succession of exuberant, gravity-defeating chords. A hugely uplifting piece to play as a concert opener or closer, or even as a striking final voluntary after a service to supercharge your emerging congregation!

For many years I have enjoyed playing the simpler manualiter chorale preludes of Zachau and J. G. Walter in the old Peters edition many organists will be familiar with. Then there are the delightful little preludes of Ernst Pepping which I first heard as a teenager in a recording by E. Power Biggs. I had something of a cross between these two influences in mind for this new set of English preludes. There are some finger-twisting moments here and there, but by and large these manuals-only pieces are meant to be shorter, more direct, and simpler (in concept, if not execution!) than my larger sets of preludes. The hymns dealt with here represent a useful mix of liturgical purposes and include Holy, Holy, Holy!, Come, Thou Almighty King, When Morning Gilds the Skies, Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates, All Things Bright and Beautiful, Beneath the Cross of Jesus, The Church’s One Foundation, and Christ the Lord is Risen Today. As always, sources and timings are included and the score prints in landscape format.

Toccata & Fugue for Organ (2018)Composed by Aris AntoniadesRunning time: approx. 7' 50'' Writing for Organ always seemed like a very distant dream for me. Born and raised in Cyprus, an isolated Mediterranean island-state in Europe where the religious musical tradition (Greek Orthodox Christianity) relies solely on voices (no instruments used during services), I never had access to an Organ. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, there’s not a single Organ in my entire country. The first time I ever saw one was during my college years in New York – and it was love at first sight! I was fascinated by its sound capabilities, its mechanism, and the sheer skill required to play it. You can, therefore, understand how thrilled I am to have had the opportunity to write for this great instrument. I would like to sincerely thank Shannon Murphy and Austin Philemon for believing in my work, and for commissioning this piece. Both the Toccata and the Fugue are based on the same (but altered) motivic materials. The Toccata is a piece that was inspired by the idea that life is a continuous marathon, represented by the ‘mechanical’ sixteenth-note ostinato figure which never stops – despite the contrapuntal obstacles that are thrown within its path. The motive, however, does transform and adapt along the way, in order to make the best of the situation. The Fugue, on the other hand, represents the cerebral aspect of life: the concept of choices. The ostinato motive of the Toccata has now morphed into the subject of the Fugue, which will be attacked by some violent chromatic enemies. There is no obligation to perform these as a suite, although for concert programming I thought that something faster and less pastoral would be in order, hence the scherzo for No. 3.The mp3 file is a Sibelius playback with generic sounds so this should not be used as a guide to the organ registrations. These are specific enough in the score and should be adhered to as much as practical.The Trois Vignettes would suit moderate to advanced players.Flute part available on request

This Good Friday composition of 2 minutes uses the accompanying figure for the JS Bach composition A Voice Saith 'All Are Mortal' is used with this hymn with melody in pedal. The concept is by the men doing their job of performing crucifixions seem to have had no idea who was one of the men they were to crucify that day--Jesus was just another victim of their day's work. The voix celeste is indicated because if this were orchestrated in the baroque period, the accompanying figure would be strings so it is here. Great for congregations where music is restricted to hymns people know, also good for students learning use of pedalboard because slow meter yet relatively constant movement. Hymn tune: Herzliebster Jesu.

Using the concept of the French toccata, a triplet pattern accompanies the melody with melody in canon with pedals and restating first half of melody, the composition develops the melody sections in order of the hymn with no reprise of first phrase at the fifth, the full melody commences the recapitulation. This 5:22 piece flies and is considered a difficult level piece. This accompaniment is happy with various imitation treatments of the various phrases throughout the development. This could be used as the prelude for a rousing start of the worship but more probably a postlude.
