Published by MorningStar Music Publishers - Digital Sheet Music (MQ.10-365-1E). “These are written-out improvisations that were a part of the Good Friday noon liturgy at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Minneapolis. It is a service based on stations of the cross from the Anglican tradition, in our case, with a procession to each of nine stations. At each station there is a mini-liturgy which consists of a reading, prayer, interpretive improvisation on the organ, and the singing of a stanza of a hymn. For the improvisation, I weave in images from the reading with the hymn. For example, at the sixth station, the reading includes the phrase “His yoke is easyâ€, and the hymn is “Go to Dark Gethsemane.†The improvisation alternates between the theme from the chorus “His yoke is easy†from Handel’s Messiah and a very dark and thick chordal setting of the hymn. The improvisations are full of imagery which are evocative and emotionally charged.â€-David CherwienThis unified set represents nine Stations of the Cross, but the pieces can also be used individually as preludes, hymn introductions, or worship interludes. It consists of 16 meditations contemplating Jesus' suffering and death at the cross. Musical language is colorful but not too dissonant. Each meditation is around 1.5-2 minutes of duration. Difficulty level is Easy Intermediate. This cycle will be very effective in musical devotations around the time of the Holy Week. Dedicated to James Flores.

The association of the twelfth Organ Symphony with Pentecost began with the Regensburg Cathedral organist Franz Josef Stoiber giving its first performance on the 2009 Rieger organ immediately in front of the great Pentecost window by Josef Oberberger in Regensburg Cathedral. Pentecost represents a consummation in Christianity, a manifestation of the Trinity, intense spirituality, baptism and the development of community among all Christians. It is a passionate celebration of inner joy, yet always surrounded by an aura of reverence and spirituality. 1st movement: A powerful invocation using the Gregorian Pentecostal hymn Veni, Creator Spiritus. 2nd movement: The white dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, representing gentleness and love. In the 3rd movement, Water is the ‘fons vivus’ (living fountain) of all life. Flowing figures on the organ frame the quasi-Gregorian variations on the melody of ‘Komm, Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott’ (Ebersberg c. 1480), inspired by the 11th Century antiphon ‘Veni Sancte Spiritus’. 4th movement: Breath and wind have been used as images of the spirit of God ever since the story of the Creation. At Pentecost they come together in a conflagration. This ‘Tempesta di fuoco’ begins with hovering tonality (over a twelve-note motif) with bright and shrill harmonies, but then leads into the tonic key as the Pentecostal hymn ‘Veni, Creator Spiritus’ shines through - a programmatic credo for the twelve Organ Symphonies, asserting a universal awareness of tonality.

As a counterpart to the Organ Symphony No. 1 Pater Noster (ED 9937), the Organ Symphony No. 2 offers softer and more mysterious (Marian) sound worlds, sketching stages of Mary's life: an adoring Salve Regina grows from the mystic source, followed by Berceuse pour Marie as a lullaby of the Christmas events. The third movement Mater Dolorosa falls back on the well-known Gregorian sequence Stabat Mater, taking Mary's pain at the cross as its central theme. The finale treats the Ave Maris Stella in a crescendo from pp to ff in a positive and solemn manner, in memory of Mary's assumption.
