Full Performance. Duration 165. School Sisters of St. Francis #977269. Published by School Sisters of St. Francis (A0.1393797). Sister Mary Hueller (1921-2017), DMA from the Eastman School of Music, colleague of Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF, was professor of organ, piano, and liturgical music at Alverno College (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) throughout her professional career. At various times Sister Mary chaired the Fine Arts Division, coordinated the Music Department, and served on many college committees. After Sr. Theophane Hytrek's passing in 1992, Sr. Mary succeeded her as organist at St. Joseph Chapel for several decades. “Tribute†was written in response to Sr. Theophane Hytrek’s choral compostion “Canticle of the Creatures†(SSAA) sung by the School Sisters of St. Francis choirs regularly for community celebrations since it was written in 1949. The choral composition will soon be published in both SSAA and SATB arrangements. “Tribute†is of intermediate difficulty but has a challenging pedal part. At the time of composition Sr. Mary had learned to use Finale software and engraved the original score herself. This editor enjoyed spending time with Sr. Mary once a week as tutor while she developed this skill. Unfortunately the original computer file is no longer available and extant copies are not of sufficient quality to publish. Dr. Masiakowski produced the following edition based on Sr. Mary’s score. Fingering and pedal suggestions are those of Sr. Mary Hueller. Though the work bearing this title is a portrait of childhood, it is a childhood quite different from the purely gameplaying and dreamlike childhood that is customarily represented. The childhood described here is carrying the seed, in all its purity, of all positive and negative qualities to be found the fully-grown men: a childhood both angelic and diabolical, and indeed very close to Henry James' The Turn of the Screw which was the direct inspiration for this monodrama. Its growth follows the innumerable sudden changes, turns and contrasts of the unsophisticated spirit. There is hardly any development at all, as each idea gives birth to the next or rejects the previons one, being object to every impulse, every tempest, every flux, every fear and delight. After a dreamlike introduction, in which two simple melodies stand out, comes a sudden awakening, Allegro, stamped all over with lavish and forever regenerating dynamism. A sudden halt leads a kind of outburst from the most simple folklore is singing, in regular, repeated notes. Again the question mark leads us to another melody, Tranquillo, of a sweet tempo, but brilliantly decorated with counter-point, its cursive traits leading this time to a kind of roguish march (Vigoroso). Yet soon there emerges a melancholic chant, Largo, in the Cromorne's timbre, and then, in the highest register of the Trumpet there reappears like a metamorphosed memory, the theme of the second movement. Passing other episodes, we come to Tempo giusto, insistent and glorious, interrupted by other passionate figures, cut off by unsettling silent moments and taken up again in always accelerating volleys.

Published by Whole Tone Press (A0.773995). The Solid Rock utilses fragments of the well-known hymn tune to create a powerful, original modern work for organ solo. Beginning quietly, introspectively, on manuals alone, at first employing a 5-note, then a 4-note motive, hinting at the first four measures of the hymn tune, slowing building to the finale which begins fortissimo, with grandeur, now echoing the first four measures of the hymn tune's refrain. Here the pedal finally enters, encompassing merely three different pitches (A, D and E). The piece ends with a strong flourish on an E6(add 9) chord, adding a 32' reed in the pedal. An impressive, but moderately easy work for church and concert. Anthony Giamanco is a member of ASCAP.
