Organ - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.890713 Composed by John Pitts. Baroque,Christian,Contemporary,Sacred. Score. 20 pages. Intensely Pleasant Music #3424723. Published by Intensely Pleasant Music (A0.890713). Passacaglia (2000-2012) for Organ - 6 minutes This piece exists in versions for organ (this one - the original version in 2000) and orchestra (performed by Bristol University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of John Pickard in 2001), and finally a piano duet version completed in 2012. The theme is based on the ground bass from Bach’s stonking Passacaglia in C minor for organ. However, the implied harmonies of Bach’s original ground bass are treated to some twisted harmonies – where each chord is altered using a system of harmonic substitution - swapping each chord implication for a newly chosen one (Cm=C, Fm=F#, G=A, Dm=A¨, Eb=F and on it goes around the 12 chromatic notes). Each key therefore has a ‘dominant’ and ‘subdominant’ that are not the actual chords V and IV in that key, so the traditional cadences and chord relationships are supplanted by 12 individual 3-chord relationships – one set of three chords for each of the 12 (now almost exclusively major) keys. In an attempt to recreate the pulls of the traditional tonic-dominant-subdominant relationships, each key then also has a particular mode/scale with particular added notes that are designed to recreate the sense of moving away from and back towards the home chord of that key. This results in a lot of rich added harmonies and some idiomatic voice-leading. Bach’s original theme in Cm is: C G - E¨ F - G A¨ - F G - D E¨ - B C - F G - C, and in the opening statement of the ground bass this has become: C A - E F# - A B¨ - F# A - D# E - C# C - F# A - C. There are then 21 variations which modulate through a range of keys, during which the ground bass is constantly re-adjusted to fit the new harmonic areas. It starts in C major, then goes through ‘closely’ related keys (eg A major and A¨ major), and then back to C in variations 6, 9 and 11. This kind of arch then happens again but going through more distant keys before returning to C in variations 18, 19 and the final climactic variation 21. Leaving aside the structural and tonal nuts and bolts, my aim was to compose a piece that attempts to recapture some of the nobility and beauty of Bach's Passacaglia, with rich added note harmonies, and exuding an exuberant joy.

Organ - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.951999 Composed by James Leith Macbeth Bain, John Hughes. Arranged by Steve Stanfill. Christian,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Score. 4 pages. Steve Stanfill #6536431. Published by Steve Stanfill (A0.951999). This is an arrangement for organ of the Brother James Air and the Welsh Hymn tune of CWM RHONDDA. It is suitable for postlude in a church setting, or as a solo rendition. It is of intermediate difficulty and can be performed on a modest instrument. Full AGO pedalboard is recommended. Note that this piece is arranged as an aaba stanza arrangement rather than the original aab triple stanza tune most current interpretations use. It just seemed better balanced to me to add the 4th stanza.Dedicated to my oldest son Michael, who loves this hymn tune.

Organ - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1347007 Composed by John Burkett. Arranged by John Burkett. Classical,Contemporary,Sacred. Score. 7 pages. John Burkett #931797. Published by John Burkett (A0.1347007). My setting of the hymn tune Diademata ('Crown Him with Many Crowns') consists of three treatments of the tune. The first begins with a brief introduction, followed by the tune (played on a trumpet-en-chamade stop), contrasted with a rhythmically active accompaniment. After a brief modulatory interlude, the second treatment offers a stately 4-voice harmonization for manuals alone. Another brief interlude then modulates back to the original tonic. The final treatment in 12/8 meter presents the tune in long, ponderous notes in the pedal, while a 2-voice accompaniment in the hands provides a sprightly stream of eighth-notes that serve as a counterweight. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

It is written using the serial technique, the compositional method where a row of notes are arranged in direct, reverse, inverse and retrograde-inverse orders. The technique employed is not as strict as the 12-tone system used in the compositions of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. In a standard theme and variations form, the melody may be altered by adding or subtracting notes, or changing it rhythmically, but it is not the case in the piece being discussed. Most variations do not follow the rhythmic pattern of the main theme; rather, the theme in each variation is treated in fragments, lengthened note values, shortened note values, inversions and reversed orders. Each variation explores moods and the work is organized this way:Main Theme: m 1-6 TRSCH is stated in the bass.Variation I: m 7-22 FugatoVariation II m 23-50 Mystical quality and lyrical Variation III m 51-88 Scherzo, lyrical section, scherzoVariation IV m 89-116 ToccataVariation V m 117-224 Mystical mood, scherzo, mystical moodVariation VI m 225-297 Toccata, brief lyrical section, toccataVariation VII m 298-317 Variation I but at a slower speed.Forward ReverseA# D D# C B F F # A G# EF# A# B G# G C# D F E CF A A# G F# C C# E D# BG# C C# A# A D# E G F# DA C# D B A# E F G# G D#

Organ - advanced to difficult - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q6218 Composed by Jean Guillou. This edition: Sheet music. Downloadable. Op. 20. Duration 36 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6218. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6218). This is the name given to the ancient tales and legends of Scandinavia, mostly drawn up in Iceland. The term itself is of Germanic origin, form the verb 'sagen' which means to say, to recount. The title also has to do with what is said, what is recounted, in a musical epic of today. Three of these pieces, Sagas 2, 4 and 6, have the particularity of being improvisations. In Saga 1, the instrument seems to awaken out of a dream of which the two opposing elements gradually become ordered. Pedal staccati soon take control and come to predominate as they build up while, in a spirit of contradiction, various solo steps, Cornet, Cromore, unfold their melismas. The dream then reestablishes itself, this time for good. The second Saga is a sombre, frenetic dance based on groups of five semiquaves. It dies away, then, after a long silence, a note emerges, and this lone note, on three different solo stops, beaten, hunted by its two neighbouring notes in increasingly animated accents, anacruses and appoggiaturas, disappears, giving way to the sombre dance which then broadens out. It is interrupted all of a sudden by the irritated, exasperated, fuming tone of that harshness that overdoes itself and vanishes. The sombre dance appears one last time, letting itself go into paroxym. The third Saga unfolds as a very ancient chant, the memory of an Ossianic chant of the earliest times. The fourth Saga develops the lyricism of a tale to be told. But in midway comes a sort of destructive outburst of which the ever tighter links give way for a moment to pure narrativity, which, after a few upsets, ends the piece with the memory of great danger overcome by candour. The fifth Saga is a kind of quiet walk, interspersed with a few controversies, interceptions and demonstrations that are rather more lively. The sixth Saga develops a kind of theme in runs, whose constantly rhythmic rebounding might bring out the idea of apologetic or exalted acclamation.Jean Guillou (*1930) gilt als einer der bedeutenden Organisten und Orgelkomponisten der Gegenwart. Schott Music - Digital #Q6227. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6227). In his 'Art of Fugue' Bach himself introduced a theme based on the four letters of his name: the notes we know as Bb A C B correspond to the German note names B A C H. Since that time, many composers have expressed their admiration for incomparable master by writing their own pieces of music on this theme. The work based on this theme by Franz Liszt is without any doubt the most important of them all - indeed, it represents a major landmark in the whole of the organ repertoire. It was composed in 1855 and given its first performance in the cathedral of Merseburg by Alexander Winterberger, to whom the work was dedicated. Liszt produced a second version of the work in 1869/70 and in 1870 he also wrote a piano transcription. It was a pity that the organist should not be able to use the ideas with which Liszt subsequently enriched his own adaptation. That is why, without adding anything that was not written by Liszt himself, Guillou has incorporated everything contained in the organ composition and the piano transcription in this 'syncretic' version of the work.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q19995). Used as a place of worship for centuries, first by Christians and then by Muslims (from 1453), the Hagia Sophia (Istanbul) still amazes people from all over the world. Since 1934, it is a museum – but more than that, the Hagia Sophia, a unique architectural work of monumental proportions in Christian Antiquity and the Middle Ages, is described as a mystical place. Monumental, yet mysterious, a 'miracle of space', a symbol, a sign. 'Sophia', the holy wisdom, accompanies us through the whole Bible history. The present music has to be regarded against this background: A reflection, contemplation with music and poetry. The Creation is powerful, but the truth about it is powerful as well. And the realization that the path to truth is reached through wisdom. As a consequence, this piece has to cross the powerful for half its duration, monumental. It is the cupola over all following (observing) verses (sections). From bar 371, the path leads back into the powerful, into the rejoicing (bar 406). It must not be forgotten to mention the suggestion of 'singing in a mosque' (bar 510) which is answered by a simple prayer (bar 511). This is reminiscent of the mosaic above the imperial door of the building portraying Jesus Christ sitting on a jewelled throne. He holds an open book in which one can read 'Peace be with you. I am the light of the world'. The line and sound of Hagia Sophia are based on a symmetrical eight-note row (mode B) with the notes B, C sharp, D, E/F, G, A flat (G sharp), B flat (A sharp). Although the major-minor relations are removed, harmonic connections (colours) emerge nevertheless.

Published by Thomas R. Schadl (A0.912504). The Finale from Sonata In C For Organ is suitable for recital use, and may be used for teaching students on techniques of incorporating thematic materials from other movements or other works to their compositions. This last movement opens with a slow and quiet registration, depicting an anticipation of some good event to come. One may associate this section (measure 1 to 51) with the expectation of Christ’s resurrection from the dead. The theme opens with a motivic variation of bugle theme that was stated in the first movement of the sonata. The exposition part of this work begins at measure 52, where the TRSCH motive repeats continuously in the pedal part against the main theme. Other thematic materials from previous movements occur in this movement. From measure 111 to 118, the first theme from the first movement appears against the main theme of this movement, and the former one is restated at bar 182 to 185. The second theme from the scherzo movement appears against the main theme of this movement at bar 120 to 123. The final section of the piece that commences from measure 195 to 211 contains the TRSCH motive, stated in the pedal part; the motive, originally written in quarter-note notation, is augmented rhythmically to whole note notation, giving one an impression of triumphant splendor. What brings the sonata to a triumphant close is that the TRSCH motive is stated three times, using the full organ registration. I hope that you enjoy this work.

Concepts of watching, waiting, meditating, and remembering are all associated with the various forms of 'vigils' that have and do exist worldwide. The piece is based on 8 ascending and varied cycles of a 9-bar added-note chord sequence and theme. Only the white notes are used, in the modal aeolian scale (A-A), within a slow, reverential tempo. There is an aspect of symmetry roughly about the centre, or apex of the work; dynamics and rhythmic complexity increase until the central variation, before receding until a quiet, reflective ending and quasi resolution.Duration: 6 minutes.Registered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1134049). 3 Pieces for Beginning Organist is a collection of 3 pieces which could conveniently be used as a Prelude, Offertory, and Postlude. Intended for the Beginning Organist, all pieces are written in Classical style, all are in Rounded Binary form (ABA), all are in the Key of C, all have very limited pedal use. In other words, these pieces are perfect to have in your repertoire when you need something to pull out at the last minute. Prelude - Soldier's Fanfare is an energetic organ fanfare made up of triads, scales, and arpeggios in very basic form. Pedaling is mostly on the chord root and usually changes just once per bar, and there is no pedaling at all during the middle Swell section. 2 pages, 1:30 minutes Offertory - Music Box Minuet is a delightful Organ Solo for manuals/hands (no pedal part). Both hands are in the Treble Clef. The RH has the melody of mostly quarter notes (crotchets) played on a Flute stop. The LH has mostly 2 note chords, one chord per bar, played on Strings. The A Theme is in 4/4 and the B Theme in 3/4. Each Theme is repeated. 1 page, 1 minute Postlude - Classical Euphoria is an Organ Solo of pure fun. Euphoria--a temporary feeling of excessive happiness and intense joy. That certainly describes this piece of music. This piece puts a smile on my face every time. And it is definitely classical. It is in the Key of C with broken triads and is in Rounded Binary form. The B theme is minor but still happy and energetic. The complete song is Intro-AABBAA-Coda. There is no pedal part except a drone in the Coda. 1 page, 1 minute Each of these three pieces may also be purchased separately on this site.

Organ - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.912466 Composed by Thomas R. Schadl. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Score. 16 pages. Thomas R. Schadl #1910845. Published by Thomas R. Schadl (A0.912466). Written in E, the work consist of two themes that have hymn-like and chorale qualities interspersed with lighthearted passages that depict the strength and weakness of human nature. The first theme resembles a melody of the ancient church; the melody has a mystical quality depicting God's majesty. The transition is light in content as it gives a listener a break from the serious mood of the first theme. The second theme is a chorale and is chordal in texture; it resembles a church hymn sung in many churches. Moreover, the second theme is written in B Flat Major, depicting one's praising God in spirit; the general mood is quiet. Following that section is the transition that gradually builds up excitement before the restatement of the first theme. The second theme is restated in E Major, but its longer note values are placed over the repeated bass and chordal patterns, a style that many composers use in their works, including Igor Stravinsky's L'Histoire Du Soldat. Once again, the lighthearted transitional passage recurs before the chimes start to strike four times. Following the chimes, the chorale is stated in E Major and begins quietly and builds up power as the work nears its ending; the chorale, unlike its first statement depicts the singing of praise with joy. This piece may be performed in concert halls and churches; it could give people fond memories of recitalists who enjoy bringing excitement to the public.

Johann Speth (1664-1719) - Toccata Prima oder erstes musikalishes Blumen-Feld Transcribed by Guido Menestrina - youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8huOtZ9bQak From Wikipedia: Johann (Johannes) Speth (9 November 1664 – after 1719) was a German organist and composer. He was born in Speinshart, some 150 km from Nuremberg, but spent most of his life in Augsburg, where he worked as cathedral organist for two years. His only surviving music is a 1693 collection, Ars Magna Consoni et Dissoni, which includes toccatas, Magnificat versets and variations in south German style. Speth was born in Speinshart, Bavaria, to teacher Heinrich Speth and his wife Margareta (née Vichtl). Past scholars established that Speth must have received music lessons from the abbot of the Premonstratensian monastery at Speinshart, one Dominikus Lieblein, however, this has recently been disproven. Nothing is known about his life before 1692, when he applied for the position of organist of Augsburg Cathedral. The application, which contained Speth's compositions, was accepted, and he was appointed organist on 4 November 1692. The music he supplied with the application was published the next year in Augsburg as Ars magna Consoni et Dissoni. In the files of the cathedral administration there is a note from 1705 showing that Speth had also to work in the office of the cathedral chapter. The exact date of Speth's death is unknown, but there is a document that shows that in 1719, he still lived with his wife and a maidservant in Augsburg. The composer's only surviving work is the collection published in 1693 in Augsburg, Ars magna Consoni et Dissoni. The title may be a reference to Athanasius Kircher's famous book, Musurgia universalis, sive ars magna consoni et dissoni (1650). An early description of the work was included by Johann Gottfried Walther in his Musikalisches Lexicon; Walther claimed Speth only compiled the pieces but did not compose. This hypothesis is now generally considered false. Ars Magna contains music intended for organ or clavichord: 10 toccatas (subtitled Musicalische Blumen-Felder), 8 Magnificat settings, and three variation sets. The music has clearly traceable Italian influences, with direct borrowings: one of the variation sets is built on a theme by Bernardo Pasquini, there is also a passage from Bernardo Storace in the Spangioletta variation set, and a verset by Alessandro Poglietti (quinti toni no. 3). The influence of contemporary southern organists is also apparent, particularly that of Georg Muffat and Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer. The toccatas are unusually short for the genre; most consist of three (toccata-fugue-toccata) sections. There are some interesting features such as dynamic indications in Toccata quarta. The Magnificat settings are, like similar pieces by Johann Kaspar Kerll and others, short versets for alternatim practice.

Transcription by Guido Menestrina, follow the score on youtube: https://youtu.be/A0riyf_X3P4 Jan Zach, called in German Johann Zach (baptized 13 November 1699 – 24 May 1773) was a Czech composer, violinist and organist. Although he was a gifted and versatile composer capable of writing both in Baroque and Classical idioms, his eccentric personality led to numerous conflicts and lack of steady employment from about 1756 onwards. Zach was born in ÄŒelákovice, Bohemia into a wheelwright's family. In 1724 he moved to Prague and started working as violinist at St Gallus and at St MartÃn. According to Dlabacž, he studied organ under Bohuslav MatÄ›j ÄŒernohorský, who lived in Prague from 1720 to 1727. Zach's career as organist started at St MartÃn, and by 1737 he was also playing the organ at the monastic church of the Merciful Brethren and the Minorite chapel of St Ann. In 1737 he competed for the position of organist at St. Vitus Cathedral, but was not successful. Details of what happened next are unknown: he was reported to have left Bohemia, but apparently remained in Prague at least until 1740. By early 1745 he was living in Augsburg and then on 24 April 1745 he was appointed Kapellmeister of the Electoral orchestra at the court of Johann Friedrich Karl von Ostein, Prince-Elector of Mainz. He visited Italy in 1746 and, briefly, Bohemia in 1747.[1] Zach evidently had a complex and eccentric personality, which led to numerous conflicts that plagued his life at Mainz. He was suspended from his position in 1750 and finally dismissed in 1756. From that point on it appears that Zach never again had steady employment. He traveled through Europe and supported himself financially by performing and selling copies of his works, teaching, dedicating his compositions, and so on. He visited numerous courts and monasteries in Germany and Austria, stayed in Italy in 1767 and between 1771and 1772, and may have worked as choirmaster at the Pairis Abbey in Alsace. He stayed several times at the Stams Abbey at Stams, Tyrol, where he may have had connections, and served as music teacher at the Jesuit school in Munich, for several brief periods of time. The last mentions of Zach in contemporary sources indicate that in January 1773 he was at the Wallerstein court, and according to the Frankfurt Kayserliche Reichs-Ober-Post-Amts-Zeitung of 5 June 1773 he died on a journey, at Ellwangen. Zach was buried in the local church of St Wolfgang. Zach's surviving oeuvre comprises a wealth of both instrumental and sacred music: some 30 masses, 28 string sinfonias, a dozen keyboard works and other pieces. Due to the nature of Zach's life it is difficult to establish a precise chronology. His work reflects the transition from the old Baroque style to the emerging Classical music era ideals. Zach was equally adept at strict counterpoint and the style galant, and was also influenced by Czech folk music. Zach was fond of chromatic modulations. Scholar Johann Branberger, writing in the early 20th century, noted Zach's preference for chromatic, and often exotic, themes. Only a few of Zach's pieces were published during his lifetime: a harpsichord sonata (in Oeuvres mêlées, v/6 (Nuremberg, 1759)), a harpsichord concerto (Nuremberg, 1766; GS C13), and the collection Sei sonate for harpsichord and violin or flute (Paris, 1767).

Organ - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1350882 Composed by John Burkett. Arranged by John Burkett. Classical,Sacred. Score. 5 pages. John Burkett #934160. Published by John Burkett (A0.1350882). My arrangement of the hymn tune Lyons (O Worship the King) is a relatively simple setting that requires only a two-manual organ and modest playing ability. Like the original tune, this setting is cast in 3-part, or ABA, form. The first, second, and fourth phrases of the tune are notated in elongated note values to allow for a more rhythmically active accompaniment. The third phrase, notated in the original quarter-note values, is elaborated upon, thus bringing the middle B-secion into better balance with the outer two A-sections. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

Organ - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.763737 Composed by Nigel Williams. Contemporary,Easter,Lent,Sacred. Score. 2 pages. Nigel Williams #6431035. Published by Nigel Williams (A0.763737). Based on the opening verse of psalm 130, and freely composed using a 12 note scale, and brilliantly performed here by Carson Cooman. To help understand the structure of the piece, the 12 note row is seen in the first three measures and you can see how that pattern works throughout the piece. The angular melodic material combined with the dramatic cluster chords paints a vivid picture of 'the Deep'. While this music would sound well on a larger instrument, this music can easily be performed on a two manual organ with pedals. Toccata & Fugue for Organ (2018)Composed by Aris AntoniadesRunning time: approx. 7' 50'' Writing for Organ always seemed like a very distant dream for me. Born and raised in Cyprus, an isolated Mediterranean island-state in Europe where the religious musical tradition (Greek Orthodox Christianity) relies solely on voices (no instruments used during services), I never had access to an Organ. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, there’s not a single Organ in my entire country. The first time I ever saw one was during my college years in New York – and it was love at first sight! I was fascinated by its sound capabilities, its mechanism, and the sheer skill required to play it. You can, therefore, understand how thrilled I am to have had the opportunity to write for this great instrument. I would like to sincerely thank Shannon Murphy and Austin Philemon for believing in my work, and for commissioning this piece. Both the Toccata and the Fugue are based on the same (but altered) motivic materials. The Toccata is a piece that was inspired by the idea that life is a continuous marathon, represented by the ‘mechanical’ sixteenth-note ostinato figure which never stops – despite the contrapuntal obstacles that are thrown within its path. The motive, however, does transform and adapt along the way, in order to make the best of the situation. The Fugue, on the other hand, represents the cerebral aspect of life: the concept of choices. The ostinato motive of the Toccata has now morphed into the subject of the Fugue, which will be attacked by some violent chromatic enemies. Organ - Moderately Difficult - Digital Download SKU: MQ.10-038-E Composed by Gerald Near. Organ Dedication. 24 pages. MorningStar Music Publishers - Digital Sheet Music #10-038-E. Published by MorningStar Music Publishers - Digital Sheet Music (MQ.10-038-E). The Third Sonata by composer Gerald Near displays the masterful compositional skills that has come to be expected from this noted composer. The Sonata begins in a buoyant 6/8 with open harmonies and a prominent pedal line. The Adagio that follows in the second movement is beautifully expressive and is followed by a fiery third movement that culminates with a flourish in the pedal. A wonderful recital piece.
