Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6218). This is the name given to the ancient tales and legends of Scandinavia, mostly drawn up in Iceland. The term itself is of Germanic origin, form the verb 'sagen' which means to say, to recount. The title also has to do with what is said, what is recounted, in a musical epic of today. Three of these pieces, Sagas 2, 4 and 6, have the particularity of being improvisations. In Saga 1, the instrument seems to awaken out of a dream of which the two opposing elements gradually become ordered. Pedal staccati soon take control and come to predominate as they build up while, in a spirit of contradiction, various solo steps, Cornet, Cromore, unfold their melismas. The dream then reestablishes itself, this time for good. The second Saga is a sombre, frenetic dance based on groups of five semiquaves. It dies away, then, after a long silence, a note emerges, and this lone note, on three different solo stops, beaten, hunted by its two neighbouring notes in increasingly animated accents, anacruses and appoggiaturas, disappears, giving way to the sombre dance which then broadens out. It is interrupted all of a sudden by the irritated, exasperated, fuming tone of that harshness that overdoes itself and vanishes. The sombre dance appears one last time, letting itself go into paroxym. The third Saga unfolds as a very ancient chant, the memory of an Ossianic chant of the earliest times. The fourth Saga develops the lyricism of a tale to be told. But in midway comes a sort of destructive outburst of which the ever tighter links give way for a moment to pure narrativity, which, after a few upsets, ends the piece with the memory of great danger overcome by candour. The fifth Saga is a kind of quiet walk, interspersed with a few controversies, interceptions and demonstrations that are rather more lively. The sixth Saga develops a kind of theme in runs, whose constantly rhythmic rebounding might bring out the idea of apologetic or exalted acclamation.Jean Guillou (*1930) gilt als einer der bedeutenden Organisten und Orgelkomponisten der Gegenwart. Though the work bearing this title is a portrait of childhood, it is a childhood quite different from the purely gameplaying and dreamlike childhood that is customarily represented. The childhood described here is carrying the seed, in all its purity, of all positive and negative qualities to be found the fully-grown men: a childhood both angelic and diabolical, and indeed very close to Henry James' The Turn of the Screw which was the direct inspiration for this monodrama. Its growth follows the innumerable sudden changes, turns and contrasts of the unsophisticated spirit. There is hardly any development at all, as each idea gives birth to the next or rejects the previons one, being object to every impulse, every tempest, every flux, every fear and delight. After a dreamlike introduction, in which two simple melodies stand out, comes a sudden awakening, Allegro, stamped all over with lavish and forever regenerating dynamism. A sudden halt leads a kind of outburst from the most simple folklore is singing, in regular, repeated notes. Again the question mark leads us to another melody, Tranquillo, of a sweet tempo, but brilliantly decorated with counter-point, its cursive traits leading this time to a kind of roguish march (Vigoroso). Yet soon there emerges a melancholic chant, Largo, in the Cromorne's timbre, and then, in the highest register of the Trumpet there reappears like a metamorphosed memory, the theme of the second movement. Passing other episodes, we come to Tempo giusto, insistent and glorious, interrupted by other passionate figures, cut off by unsettling silent moments and taken up again in always accelerating volleys.

The Finale from Sonata In C For Organ is suitable for recital use, and may be used for teaching students on techniques of incorporating thematic materials from other movements or other works to their compositions.This last movement opens with a slow and quiet registration, depicting an anticipation of some good event to come. One may associate this section (measure 1 to 51) with the expectation of Christ’s resurrection from the dead. The theme opens with a motivic variation of bugle theme that was stated in the first movement of the sonata. The exposition part of this work begins at measure 52, where the TRSCH motive repeats continuously in the pedal part against the main theme. Other thematic materials from previous movements occur in this movement. From measure 111 to 118, the first theme from the first movement appears against the main theme of this movement, and the former one is restated at bar 182 to 185. The second theme from the scherzo movement appears against the main theme of this movement at bar 120 to 123. The final section of the piece that commences from measure 195 to 211 contains the TRSCH motive, stated in the pedal part; the motive, originally written in quarter-note notation, is augmented rhythmically to whole note notation, giving one an impression of triumphant splendor. What brings the sonata to a triumphant close is that the TRSCH motive is stated three times, using the full organ registration. I hope that you enjoy this work.

The left hand and pedal parts play asynchronous ostinato motives around the tune producing colourful harmony. The piece ends with the last phrase of the hymn in the D major key. My Prelude on the Christmas carol tune Stille Nacht (Silent Night) was created with a 3-manual organ in mind, though it might be possible to play it on a 2-manual instrument, depending on the stop list. The three different settings of the tune are intended to be played as a unit, though the cadence that concludes the second setting allows the performer the option of omitting the final setting. The tune appears first in the left hand, then in the pedals, and finally in the soprano voice. The middle setting, in the dominant key, is harder to play than the outer sections, primarily because of the trio texture and quicker rhythmic movement. As one might expect, the three settings are distinguished from one another primarily by their accompanimental styles and suggested registrations. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music DIrect website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

It appears twice in full - first as a reharmonization of the melody in F major and second in D major with a countermelody added in the second half or the melody. Between these apperances is an imitative section based on the beginning of the hymn tune over a sustained D in the pedal. At the end, reed stops usher in a brief flourish for a grand finish. The manual parts are more active and more difficult than the pedal part, making this an ideal piece for an experienced keyboard player transitioning to the organ.

My Variations on the hymn tune St. Elizabeth (Fairest Lord Jesus) present the tune with an original harmonization followed by four variations. The first two settings (Theme and Variation I) give out the tune in unaltered form, undergirded by two different harmonizations. Variation II is a duo cast in baroque style with an ornamented melody accompanied by a rhythmically repetitive pattern in the manual bass. In Variation III, a continuously moving accompaniment played by the feet and the left hand provides a backdrop to another ornamented version of the hymn tune, again in a somewhat baroque style. The final variation is more challenging to play. After a brief introduction, the tune appears in the soprano voice, harmonically supported by the alto and pedal bass, while the left hand provides a continuous stream of eighth-note triplets. After a couple of modulations, the final section (marked grandioso) presents the tune with a 4-voice harmonization punctuated at the end of each phrase by a trumpet-like rhythmic pattern played on a state trumpet stop. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

German • English • French.Orpheus is one of 12 symphonic poems composed by Franz Liszt between 1848 and 1858. Liszt regarded these compositions as representing a higher form of musical creation. Their genesis in what he described as a poetic idea allowed him to favour freedom of expression over the constraints of form. The score of 'Orpheus' was first performed on 16 February 1854, under the baton of the composer, as the curtain rose for a production of Gluck's opera 'Orpheus' in Weimar. It had been inspired in particular by the contemplation in the Louvre museum in Paris of an Etruscan vase despicting Orpheus as a symbol of beauty and civilisation, mitigating the brutality of the world through the power of his art. This symphonic poem was first transcribed for organ in about 1860 by Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalk (1827-1908), one of Liszt's pupils. It appears that Liszt was moved to make radical modifications to that version, in spite of which it still remains unsatisfactory. It does, however, give us the benefit of proving that Liszt, who also transcribed the work for piano duet, was not against the idea in itself of a transcription for organ. Jean Guillou's transcription is more than a simple adaptation. As far as Romantic music is concerned, he is responsible for finding appropriate equivalents to the dramatic function of instrumentation to create an atmosphere which comes as close to that of the original composition as possible, to enrich the contrapuntal texture and to contribute to the simulation of the orchestral sound.
