My Prelude on the Christmas carol tune Mendelssohn (Hark! the Herald Angels Sing) opens with a brief introduction based on the first measure of the third phrase of the tune. An original harmonization of the entire tune follows, anchored by a repetitive rhythmic pattern of alternating rests and chords. An interlude ensues, which is a rhythmically intensified reworking of the initial introduction. Then the first phrase of the tune sounds in a new key in the pedal bass, accompanied by parallel triads in the hands. Another interlude follows, also based on parallel triads, and leading to a statement in the pedals of the second phrase of the tune. Slightly modified versions of the third and fourth phrases with varied accompaniments lead to a strong cadence. The final section follows, beginning with an extended introduction that increases the rhythmic pace to the point where a constant stream of rapidly moving sixteenth notes drives forward to the final statement of the carol tune, and lends a sense of urgency as the flow continues underneath the melody. The tempo slows slightly during a brief postlude in which the state trumpet reiterates a rhythmic pattern heard earlier. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

The variations explore sounds, textures, styles, and techniques of different organ traditions, from the German Baroque to early twentieth-century French. Harmonically, too, the variations cover a wide range, from fully diatonic to heavily chromatic. After the last variation is an extended finale, which presents the hymn tune, in augmentation, in canon between bass and soprano while the other voices provide dense counterpoint in between. The piece concludes with a blistering pedal solo under a series of unexpected and pungent chords. This is a work that strives to inspire awe and wonder.Technical note: the variety of textures and styles in this piece requires a well-rounded technique. Likewise the variety of sounds and styles will be better served by a larger instrument.

A well known French Noel (Quand Jesus naquit à Noël) from the Baroque era, arranged by many of the big French Baroque composers like Balastre and Beauvarlet-Charpentier. It is also a very populair Christmas song in The Netherlands (Midden in de Winternacht). I made an accessible Basse de Trompette over this beautiful melodie. However it’s written in C major however it requires some skills to play the solo with the left hand. A lovely tune as a prelude or any other occasion around Christmas. And of course, you can sing the the words on this one as well.

Written in E, the work consist of two themes that have hymn-like and chorale qualities interspersed with lighthearted passages that depict the strength and weakness of human nature. The first theme resembles a melody of the ancient church; the melody has a mystical quality depicting God's majesty. The transition is light in content as it gives a listener a break from the serious mood of the first theme. The second theme is a chorale and is chordal in texture; it resembles a church hymn sung in many churches. Moreover, the second theme is written in B Flat Major, depicting one's praising God in spirit; the general mood is quiet. Following that section is the transition that gradually builds up excitement before the restatement of the first theme. The second theme is restated in E Major, but its longer note values are placed over the repeated bass and chordal patterns, a style that many composers use in their works, including Igor Stravinsky's L'Histoire Du Soldat. Once again, the lighthearted transitional passage recurs before the chimes start to strike four times. Following the chimes, the chorale is stated in E Major and begins quietly and builds up power as the work nears its ending; the chorale, unlike its first statement depicts the singing of praise with joy. Passacaglia (2000-2012) for Organ - 6 minutes This piece exists in versions for organ (this one - the original version in 2000) and orchestra (performed by Bristol University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of John Pickard in 2001), and finally a piano duet version completed in 2012. The theme is based on the ground bass from Bach’s stonking Passacaglia in C minor for organ. However, the implied harmonies of Bach’s original ground bass are treated to some twisted harmonies – where each chord is altered using a system of harmonic substitution - swapping each chord implication for a newly chosen one (Cm=C, Fm=F#, G=A, Dm=A¨, Eb=F and on it goes around the 12 chromatic notes). Each key therefore has a ‘dominant’ and ‘subdominant’ that are not the actual chords V and IV in that key, so the traditional cadences and chord relationships are supplanted by 12 individual 3-chord relationships – one set of three chords for each of the 12 (now almost exclusively major) keys. In an attempt to recreate the pulls of the traditional tonic-dominant-subdominant relationships, each key then also has a particular mode/scale with particular added notes that are designed to recreate the sense of moving away from and back towards the home chord of that key. This results in a lot of rich added harmonies and some idiomatic voice-leading. Bach’s original theme in Cm is: C G - E¨ F - G A¨ - F G - D E¨ - B C - F G - C, and in the opening statement of the ground bass this has become: C A - E F# - A B¨ - F# A - D# E - C# C - F# A - C. There are then 21 variations which modulate through a range of keys, during which the ground bass is constantly re-adjusted to fit the new harmonic areas. It starts in C major, then goes through ‘closely’ related keys (eg A major and A¨ major), and then back to C in variations 6, 9 and 11. This kind of arch then happens again but going through more distant keys before returning to C in variations 18, 19 and the final climactic variation 21. Leaving aside the structural and tonal nuts and bolts, my aim was to compose a piece that attempts to recapture some of the nobility and beauty of Bach's Passacaglia, with rich added note harmonies, and exuding an exuberant joy.

Both pieces are in the Key of C, both are binary, and both are written in a style reminiscent of Mozart. Both are for manuals only, no Pedal part. They both have an upbeat, happy feel and are fun to play. One is a Minuet and the other is a Gavot. The Gavot introduces Alberti bass, triplets, and different phrasing between the hands. Repeated sections alternate loud-soft, detached-slurred, major-minor. The Minuet has an easy fanfare theme of repeated notes, scales, and arpeggios, then 6 variations which introduce neighbouring notes, tonic minor, inversions, light syncopation, staccato, and octave. Minuet - 5 pages, 2:30 minutes Gavot - 2 pages, 2:00 minutes with cover, 8 page booklet.

The brief was to compose a Postlude to be played at the end of the Easter Day service, and to use a well known Easter melody. The piece begins with an introduction based on piling fourths, around the opening three notes of the ensuing theme upon which the work is based: 'Melchoir Vulpius' (1609), otherwise known as the hymn tune 'The Strife is O'er'. There follows a set of variations on this theme; initially featuring an Alberti bass, then a variant with the melody in canon in the pedals, then followed by a tonic minor key version, and then a 'scherzando' variation using 5/8 metre in the subdominant. After a return of the introductory build-up, a final 'brillante' version of the theme is stated, complete with fanfares, followed by a victorious coda. The work also may be used for educational purposes in that it teaches students on how a theme is transformed rhythmically and arranged melodically.Theme And Variations On TRSCH For Organ by Thomas R. Schadl consists of seven variations that are based on TRSCH (B flat, D, E flat, C, and B or A# D D# C B). It is written using the serial technique, the compositional method where a row of notes are arranged in direct, reverse, inverse and retrograde-inverse orders. The technique employed is not as strict as the 12-tone system used in the compositions of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. In a standard theme and variations form, the melody may be altered by adding or subtracting notes, or changing it rhythmically, but it is not the case in the piece being discussed. Most variations do not follow the rhythmic pattern of the main theme; rather, the theme in each variation is treated in fragments, lengthened note values, shortened note values, inversions and reversed orders.
