An air and four contrasting variations on ’Brother James’ Air’, a hymn tune composed by James Leith Bain, who was a Scottish minister at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century and known as Brother James. The first three variations are in the style of John Stanley, the fourth variation is a two part canon. Although the suggested stop registration is for three manuals and is only a guide. All movements only require a small number of light stops and therefore can very effectively be played on a small two manual instrument.

The first theme starts with the G minor scale that reaches to a perfect fifth above the tonic before descending to the home key. The second theme is related to the first one, but it begins with the perfect-fifth upward movement followed by its stepwise descent, and is written in a fugal manner. The latter half of the work is a toccata written in the style of the late 19th century and early 20th century French organ music; in that section, the pedal division states the main theme against the rapid 16th notes on the manuals in the key of G Major. Technical demands include a good sense of rhythm, a steady beat and a slight legato touch. This movement is suitable for recital and education uses; it may also be performed as a postlude in church services. I wish you the best in taking a look at this piece; so, enjoy it.

Key: E flat major.The American musical patrons Mildred and Robert Wood Bliss were considering which distinguished composer to commission to create a work in celebration of their 30th wedding anniversary in 1938. The couple had made the acquaintance of Igor Stravinsky in April the preceding year at the première of his ballet Jeu de Cartes in New York and had subsequently invited the composer to their country home ’Dumbarton Oaks’ in Washington D.C. to talk about a new composition. Stravinsky only just managed to complete the work in time for the anniversary celebrations: its date of completion was also the date of its first performance. For his classically styled three-movement work, he selected the title Concerto in E flat, adding the subtitle Dumbarton Oaks as a dedication. The structure of the work references the concerto grosso: it features a soloist ensemble which unites in the tutti sequences but also plays in concertino groups during the solo episodes. Broken chordal structures characterise the central movement whereas the outer movements are distinguished through their use of fugato. Dumbarton Oaks went on to become one of Stravinsky’s most successful works, performed widely and delighting Mildred Bliss so much that she immediately issued another commission, for the Symphony in C. Its composer’s very public commitment to American cultural life helped pave the way for Stravinsky’s emigration to the USA in 1945. As early as 1952 Leif Thybo created an arrangement for organ which Stravinsky probably did not know at the time of his life.Inspired by Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, Igor Stravinsky’s three-movement concerto ‘Dumbarton Oaks’ is a musical monument to two major American patrons: Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss commissioned this work to mark the 30th anniversary of their wedding. It was performed for the first time at a private celebration at their country house Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C. under the direction of Nadia Boulanger in 1938. As early as 1952 Leif Thybo created an arrangement for organ which Stravinsky probably did not know at the time of his life.

Though the work bearing this title is a portrait of childhood, it is a childhood quite different from the purely gameplaying and dreamlike childhood that is customarily represented. The childhood described here is carrying the seed, in all its purity, of all positive and negative qualities to be found the fully-grown men: a childhood both angelic and diabolical, and indeed very close to Henry James' The Turn of the Screw which was the direct inspiration for this monodrama. Its growth follows the innumerable sudden changes, turns and contrasts of the unsophisticated spirit. There is hardly any development at all, as each idea gives birth to the next or rejects the previons one, being object to every impulse, every tempest, every flux, every fear and delight. After a dreamlike introduction, in which two simple melodies stand out, comes a sudden awakening, Allegro, stamped all over with lavish and forever regenerating dynamism. A sudden halt leads a kind of outburst from the most simple folklore is singing, in regular, repeated notes. Again the question mark leads us to another melody, Tranquillo, of a sweet tempo, but brilliantly decorated with counter-point, its cursive traits leading this time to a kind of roguish march (Vigoroso). Yet soon there emerges a melancholic chant, Largo, in the Cromorne's timbre, and then, in the highest register of the Trumpet there reappears like a metamorphosed memory, the theme of the second movement. Passing other episodes, we come to Tempo giusto, insistent and glorious, interrupted by other passionate figures, cut off by unsettling silent moments and taken up again in always accelerating volleys.

The first section is written in a North German toccata style where the opening measures are treated in a canonic manner and played in a series of thirds and sixths against the main theme stated in the pedal division; this compositional approach is somewhat reminiscent of the organ compositions of Dietrich Buxtehude (Prelude and Fugue in G Minor BUXWV 149). The second section is contrapuntal in nature and depicts a humorous moment; that moment may depict a comedy show or a circus event at a fair. Following that section is the recurrence of the main theme of the first movement. The fourth section is quiet in sound intensity and is the most chromatically oriented than other parts. Following that is a fugue, derived from the main theme of the first movement, and a transitional passage leading back to the recurring main theme. The work concludes triumphantly in the key of G Major. The Scherzo requires attention to articulation, phrasing and timing. This work is suitable for educational and recital uses: it introduces organ students to major works of Buxtehude and Johann S. Bach and many more composers; organists of various expertise may play the work to lighten up the audience's mood after listening to more difficult organ works. The classical form is respected, dwon to the smallest details, so that the various development sections lead to a recapitulation of the two themes and to a more asservative conclusion. Throughout the work the style is extremely sparse and straightforward. The nostalgia expressed by the theme of the second movement leads us towards effects of perspective that modify the light thrown on the melody, at first distand and soon more insistent, more dominant, before dying away in the gentle mist. Used as a place of worship for centuries, first by Christians and then by Muslims (from 1453), the Hagia Sophia (Istanbul) still amazes people from all over the world. Since 1934, it is a museum – but more than that, the Hagia Sophia, a unique architectural work of monumental proportions in Christian Antiquity and the Middle Ages, is described as a mystical place. Monumental, yet mysterious, a 'miracle of space', a symbol, a sign. 'Sophia', the holy wisdom, accompanies us through the whole Bible history. The present music has to be regarded against this background: A reflection, contemplation with music and poetry. The Creation is powerful, but the truth about it is powerful as well. And the realization that the path to truth is reached through wisdom. As a consequence, this piece has to cross the powerful for half its duration, monumental. It is the cupola over all following (observing) verses (sections). From bar 371, the path leads back into the powerful, into the rejoicing (bar 406). It must not be forgotten to mention the suggestion of 'singing in a mosque' (bar 510) which is answered by a simple prayer (bar 511). This is reminiscent of the mosaic above the imperial door of the building portraying Jesus Christ sitting on a jewelled throne. He holds an open book in which one can read 'Peace be with you. I am the light of the world'. The line and sound of Hagia Sophia are based on a symmetrical eight-note row (mode B) with the notes B, C sharp, D, E/F, G, A flat (G sharp), B flat (A sharp). Although the major-minor relations are removed, harmonic connections (colours) emerge nevertheless.

Although the suggested registration is for three manuals, the piece can easily be played on two manuals, e.g. with the solo played on a trumpet stop (or 8 4 22/3 2 diapasons if there is no trumpet stop) and the accompaniment played on 8 &4 diapasons (or 8 diapason & 4 gemshorn) on the second manual coupled to the pedals. All movements only require a small number of light stops and therefore can very effectively be played on a small two manual instrument.

The choralepreludes in this volume combine traditional classical form with stilistic elementsof Celtic folk music such as dance rhythms, syncopation, and ornamental figuresthat give them a certain lightness.
Almost allchorals, almost all of which are ecumenical, were composed for practical use. Therefore,they are mostly kept quite short (about 1 min.) and quote the chorale melodycompletely as cantus firmus in the approximate singing tempo. Some preludes have a quasi baroque design, but most also have a certain Celtic flavor. Indications aboutstops have been omitted, the indications SW (Swell) and HW(Great) just indicatewhere the c. f. is to be emphasized. The preludes arefollowed by accompanying movements.
