A short piece for solo unaccompanied tuba, Miniature No. 1 is a playful and light piece that shows the fun and technical side of solo tuba music, but it's also short enough to program as a breather piece between longer solos. It shares a rhythmic motif with another of my pieces, Fallen for unaccompanied tuba, both of which were written at the same time and influenced each other as a sort of positive/negative experience, this being the positive and brighter of the two pieces. Remember to have fun with it.

Published by Modrana Music Publishers Ltd (A0.966280). Serenade For Solo Tuba Review Serenade for solo Tuba by David Golightly Modrana Music Publishers Ltd. The Serenade for solo Tuba was premiered by James Anderson, Professor of Tuba at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, England in May 1980. My only question is, why did it take so long to get published and into the repertoire of serious tubists all over the globe? It is definitely a welcome addition to the library of the solo tubist. Good solo pieces that are entertaining for audiences are quite hard to come by. This piece will most assuredly be one of those to join the ranks of Penderecki's Capriccio and Gregson's Alarum. The Serenade is set up in three movements and is metered throughout. The range of the work is from DD-g1. Movement One entitled March, is in 2/4 and m.m. equals 112. It is quite spirited in style and will require a performer with agile abilities to navigate through wide intervals and varied articulations. Movement Two is not your typical slow, melodic song that one would imagine from a title such as Elegy. It is extremely doloroso in nature and has the soloist soaring into the extreme upper range (g1) utilizing strict rhythmic patterns. The Gallop, movement three, is quite animated and encompasses mixed meters with the majority of the piece being in 6/8. Just when you think your triplets are moving along, a duple figure is thrown in to add variety to the melodic lines, which is actually quiet refreshing and prevents it from becoming a boring, technical exercise. As was stated before, this work will require a performer with great technique. Not for the less than advanced tubist. If you have conquered the other reputable solo tuba pieces, then this one should definitely be next. Raul I. Rodriguez Tuba Journal 1998. For a college composer, not every day is a bright and cheery day. Music is our magical language, though, that lets us convey our mood or how we feel in general. Fallen, an unaccompanied tuba solo, was one of my pieces that expressed how I felt on one of those down days. It was written alongside Miniature No. 1, another unaccompanied solo of mine, so it does share rhythmic motifs, but that also shows how I was able to express myself in both a positive and depressing light. Fallen will show you just how distant and stressed being down can be, featuring tuba multiphonics and intense syncopated rhythms.

Howard #6572657. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998893). This sixth and final piece in the series of 'Mosaic' works is written for solo tuba. As in the other Mosaic works (all available via Sheet Music Plus), a series of early, unrelated sketches were reworked to create this piece. Mosaic VI continues the preoccupation with arch form. It features and juxtaposes six highly contrasting ideas. The first theme explores snap rhythms as well as semitone and tone steps. The second idea is a chromatic and jaunty 6/8 scherzando, followed by a modal third theme in 2/2. A fourth theme explores rhythmic displacement, as well as fast octatonic scales, while a major key fifth idea is more conventionally song-like. The final, striding sixth theme is then followed by varied recollections of the previous themes in reverse, adhering to the arch-like structure of the work. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for advanced tuba players.

Performance Notes from the Composer Édesen Édesen translates to sweetly in Hungarian, and is this movement’s purpose: to be a centering, calming moment before the following tumult.The first 10 bars serve as an introduction to warm up to the melody. The melody has three contrasting articulations that must be respected: staccato, legato, and normal. The melody easily leads to high and low range notes-excellent for beginner/intermediate tubists to expand and solidify their range. Give more air for the range’s extremities so pitches don’t become too thin or muddled. The second theme in the dominant (E major) should be played with luscious legato and bright staccato. LassanLassan translates to slowly in Hungarian usually conveying stateliness or seriousness. This argumentative movement breaks the former’s idyll and sets the case for the next movement’s defiance and victory.The first section is to be played serious and strong. Increase air support for the higher pitches. Make the descending scales resound and bounce off the lowest notes. The second theme starting at 81 should be played with great charm and ease. For the solo passages, show-off but slow the tempo into the fermatas: (m77-80, m102-103, and m132-133). Friska Friska translates to fresh in Hungarian and in this case, it’s a duality of turbulence and final elation.Start the piece fast, but not too boisterous-embellishments are added in the repeat demanding boisterousness. Epitomizing the turbulence, the con moto sections (at m161 & m260) emphasize a 1 beat per measure feel-accelerate the tempo as is comfortable. The digressionary, crab-like sections (at m176 & m275) should be played as light as possible to help build up to the elated sections. The first elated section (m188) should be played as if gleefully discovered but not yet won; the second elated section (m291), with a victorious finality that cannot be diminished or tarnished.

The main theme is a connected line ascending through the most lyrical range of the instrument; in between theme statements are quasi-polyphonic lines which use the full range of the tuba to create the illusion of bass, harmony, and melody. The singsong nature of the theme invites rubato interpretation, and expressive annotations throughout the score encourage this further. A majestic theme appears briefly towards the end of the work, which the player should clearly convey as a brilliant and triumphal outcry. The final statement is a long series of delicate, uninterrupted arrpegios decrescendoing to ppp, and is best circular-breathed. This piece demands a high technical level and is for the advanced player seeking to expand their musicality.

Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018891). Programme Notes: Icarus Also Flew takes its title from the first line of the poem Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert. He is referring to the classical myth of Daedalus and Icarus, an inventive father and son who bravely escape from their imprisonment in a tower by collecting the disposed feathers of seabirds, then fashion wings out of them and fly away. While the story is often treated as a morality tale--listen to your elders, don’t get cocky like the young man, Icarus, who, in such an understandable state of elation, ascended too close to the sun thus causing the wings to melt and his tumbling to his Mediterranean death--what Jack Gilbert reminds us is how regardless of one’s failure, the sheer transcendental experience of mortal flight remains glorious and unforgettable. Icarus’s fall was not into a legacy of disdain and oblivion, but in truth, he had come to the end of his triumph. This piece was the first of a series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his celebrated fifth symphony in C minor--the Fate symphony, as it is commonly known. I’ll let the listener find their own connections.About the Composer:Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Tango for unaccompanied tuba is, to no one's surprise, a tango. Inspired by Jim Self's performance of Polka.com, I wanted to write a similar-but-"serious" piece in the style of a tango. This piece fleshes out several iconic and some stereotypical tango themes while still maintaining its own flow from start to finish. Feel the bass, hear the trumpets and violins, and even the percussion is there when you get in the groove - all in a small solo tuba packet.
