Edward Elgar composed his Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, popularly known as the Enigma Variations, between October 1898 and February 1899. It is an orchestral work comprising fourteen variations on an original theme. Nimrod (Adagio) was the 9th variation. The name of this variation refers to Augustus J. Jaeger, who was employed as a music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar's, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. Nimrod is described in the Old Testament as a mighty hunter before the Lord, Jäger being German for hunter. It is built on a series of leitmotifs, developed from melodic and rhythmic ideas as featured in the opening section. These reappear in different guises throughout the music. The piece follows an arch form – each section is referenced again later on in reverse order, with the ending an exact repeat of the opening five bars - hence the title 'Waterwheel'.The piece itself is reasonably slow, usually taking around 6 minutes to perform at the suggested tempo marking. This makes it appropriate for Intermediate/Advanced Intermediate players, either in a school environment or elsewhere.

Published by Phil Steadman (A0.992171). The Soprano concerto is a modern composition based on traditional styles and can be played by quartets of all standards. The faster movements work equally well at the stated tempos or at slower or faster tempos as desired. There are 5 movements plus an introduction. The first 3 movements should be segue including the introduction. There should be a comfortable break between the 3rd/4th and the 4th/5th movement. Introduction – Adagio The dynamics should be exaggerated in the lower 3 parts giving large crescendos and diminuendos. Segue. Movement I – Allegro Set by the soprano, care should be taken note to take the tempo too fast as it gets a little trickier later on. The soprano cadenza can be ad-libbed and played at any tempo. The lower instruments should come off the dotted minim in strict time in bar 81. Segue. Movement II - AndanteWhile it is segue, take care not too rush into this movement. The lower parts should be played gently to avoid overpowering the soprano lead. Make the most of the accents. Segue. Movement III – AllegrettoThis movement should be played lightly in the accompaniment, particularly in the slightly comical middle section. Movement IV – LentoThe quieter it is played, the more effective this movement sounds. Allow the soprano to play as quietly as possible but the soprano should become animated in bar 235 before dying back down. The lower instruments can come out in the section at bar 241 (with the lead on tenor) but must die down completely at to the end of the movement. Movement V – AllegroTake care not to allow the accompaniment to overpower the soprano and try to avoid any accelerando for the last 9 bars.

It would be a welcomed addition to any music library. This short composition, which lasts less than two minutes, will provide many students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long phrases, and to help them to continue to develop good intonation because many of the phrases cadence on a unison note. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (7 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble’s extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quartet version of this composition for many church services, especially funerals, when we were asked to supply something more somber and introspective rather than the louder, more festive music which many people come to expect from a Trumpet Ensemble. Francesco Durante was an Italian composer who was born on March 31, 1684 at Frattamaggiore, in the Kingdom of Naples. At an early age he entered the Conservatorio dei poveri di Gesu Cristo, in Naples, where he received lessons from Gaetano Greco. Later he became a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio. He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant’Onofrio and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Nicola Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria de Loreto, also in Naples. He held this post for thirteen years, until his death on September 30, 1755. His fame as a teacher was considerable, and, unlike his Neapolitan contemporaries, who attracted international notice with their operas, Francesco Durante achieved recognition through his church music, along with some vocal chamber and instrumental works. His concern was not quantity. A complete collection of Durante’s works, consisting almost exclusively of sacred music, was presented by Gaspare Selveggi, a Neapolitan art collector and music theorist, to the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. The imperial library of Vienna also preserves a valuable collection of Durante’s manuscripts. The fact that Durante never composed for the stage brought him an exaggerated reputation as a composer of sacred music. He was considered one of the best church composers of his style and period. In his masses, requiems, litanies and Lamentations, he could provide strong expressive moments, as he does in this “Kyrieâ€. In addition to this arrangement for a Woodwind Quartet, Regis Bookshar has also made other arrangements of this selection. The Overture Suite was a form and style of music popular in the 17th and first half of the 18th centuries. The early suites consisted of sets of the popular dance movements at the time and would have been used to accompany dancing. The overture was a later addition - probably for more formal occasions - and enabled the composer to show off his skill before the dancing began. Telemann developed the form over the first half of the 18th century composing suites for a wide variety of instrumental combinations from groups of wind instruments for outside events, solo instruments with string orchestra, to string quartet, which was the original version of Overture Burlesque and one of the first string quartets.Instead of the usual dance titles, Telemann used characters associated with Scaramouche, a stock clown character - Harlequin the Joker, Columbine, Pierrot, Mezzetin en turc, the Narcissus of pantomime - and a pair of Menuets. The suite would have been staged and the music played robustly to suit the characters as they danced. Players of intermediate standard and above will have fun playing this.The suite is arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon to play as a concert piece or as an accompaniment to a stage performance.The tempo indications are suggestions in parentheses ( ) as are the additional dynamic markings. Some additional cadential trills have been added without comment. Fun trivia about the opening theme song is that during the first season the show opened with their sponsor Philip Morris’ animation of stick figure cartoons of Lucy and Desi climbing down a pack of Philip Morris cigarettes. It was scored with Ferde Grofé’s Jr. The Grand Canyon Suite theme (a composition from 1931).From the second season onwards, the I Love Lucy signature tune we all know so well became the main theme, and one of the most recognizable pieces of music on the planet. It was written by composer Eliot Daniel who cranked it out in an afternoon as a favor to his old Coast Guard buddy Jess Oppenheimer, the show’s producer. Since Daniel still had another year under his exclusive contract to Fox, he asked Oppenheimer to keep his name out of it. Consequently his name does not appear on first or the second season TV credits for what became one of the most popular TV themes. Later, Daniel did seek credit and received royalties from syndicated reruns for the rest of his life.The lyrics were written by Harold Adamson for an episode in the third season in which Lucy believes everyone has forgotten her birthday. The piece appears in various late sixteenth and early seventeenth century manuscript collections and is mentioned in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, which was written around 1597. The founder of the Mr Whippy ice cream company had a particular interest in Henry VIII and, believing him to be the composer of Greensleeves, chose the tune to use as the jingle heralding the arrival of his ice cream vans.

The Death of Åse was originally composed as part of the incidental music for Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt. Over 10 years later, Grieg selected certain elements from this work, organising these into two orchestral suites. The Death of Åse features in the first suite, Op. 46, along with Morning, Anitra’s Dance and In the Hall of the Mountain King. Åse is the mother of Peer Gynt. When her son absconds with the daughter of an affluent local farmer, Åse sacrifices everything to pay the penalties on his behalf and, left destitute, dies of poverty and illness. Cheery stuff!Although fairly straightforward in terms of notes and rhythms, this piece has been classed as 'intermediate' as it requires good intonation and ensemble skills to perform effectively.
