The Arts and the Hours is an interlude from Rameau's last opera, Les Boréades.  The libretto, attributed to Louis de Cahusac (1706–1759), is loosely based on the Greek legend of Abaris the Hyperborean. This particular work has recently gained traction after being recorded by Vikingur Ólafsson on piano, reviving one of Rameau's most beautiful works. This minuet is the third movement from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik – the Serenade No. 13 for Strings in G Major, K.525 – one of Mozart’s best known works. Scholars suspect that the piece was written under commission, although no records exist of who might have commissioned it, or when it was first performed. Eine Kleine Nachtmusik was not published during the composer’s lifetime – it was one item in a bundle of works that his widow Constanze sold to a publisher some time after Mozart's death.This minuet from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik makes a charming recital piece or appealing addition to general repertoire. The semi-flexible instrumentation allows for use with several slightly different player line-ups.

During his period at the court of the Esterházy family, Joseph Haydn spent time working alongside gypsy musicians. The influence of Hungarian folk tunes is evident in some of his best known works. String Quartet Op. 20, No. 4 is often known as the ‘Gypsy’ quartet and the concluding movement of his Piano Trio in G Major (Hob. XV:25) is a rondo in traditional folk style. This ‘Gypsy Dance’ is one of a set of 8, originally written for piano but arranged here for semi-flexible mixed woodwind quartet.This piece has been classed as 'intermediate' as, despite the alarming opening key in the clarinet parts, it is actually fairly approachable.

Solage is an obscure composer, and aside from what can be deduced from the pieces attributed to him in the Chantilly Codex, nothing else is known about him. There are several interpretations of his name, and it is not clear whether his first name was Jean or Charles. The ars subtilior was a manneristic compositional school centered on Avignon at the end of the 14th century. It was characterized by complex rhythms and pitch, and it was a transitional period between the late medieval and Renaissance periods. Feierlicher Einzug by Richard Strauss for Brass Ensemble Arranged by Jari Villanueva Feierlicher Einzug (Solemn Processional) was written by Richard Strauss in 1909. The occasion was an investiture ceremony for the Knights of St. John, a fraternal organization with roots going back as far as the 11th Century. Today, offshoots of this venerable order still exist, doing charitable works–primarily in aiding the poor and the sick–around the world. The original scoring of this piece included parts for 15 Eb Trumpets, 4 Eb Horns, 4 Trombones, 2 Tubas, and Timpani. Strauss later scored the work for full orchestra, including organ and optional chorus. An arrangement by Max Reger (1873-1916) for organ, 2 trombones, and timpani is still frequently performed today. This arrangement was originally done for the US Air Force Band and has been performed by the New England Conservatory Brass and Texas Christian University Wind Symphony.

He is best known for his symphonic works, but also wrote many piano pieces based on dances. I have taken his piano Gavotte and freely arranged it for Instrumental Quartet. Â This brisk piece is lively with a busy texture. I have crafted 4 independent lines that are each of equal importance and the focus quickly shifts from one part to the other. The lines rhythmically weave together, answering each other. The real interest in the piece is the constantly changing and contrasting dynamics and articulation. Often every beat of the bar has a different articulation, and the individual parts rarely have the same articulation at the same time. (i.e., One part might be slurred while another part is playing staccato and yet another is accented.) This complexity of texture creates energy and excitement. A great piece to spice up any concert with a fun smile. Â This composition is a fusion of multiple eras; originally written during the Romantic period, but with many Classical elements and a Baroque form and style, to which I add some Contemporary touches. Â Notes and rhythms are Intermediate, but adding all of the markings at this pace makes it Advanced Intermediate.6 page score, 2 page parts2:10 minutes
