With cascading seventh chords and a hymn-like melody, Twilight reflects a peaceful evening as the last sunlight fades into a star-studded night sky. Storm opens with swirling fourths and a dramatic melody in the bass. The whirling winds of the trebles are frequently broken by musical thunder in the bass and an ascending lightning motif-the storm lulls and surges, reaching a rapid and dramatic finale. Scott R. Hummel is a composer and musician from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Scott holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Music in Audio and Music Production from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania. He has performance experience in keyboard instruments, choral music, and percussion. His introduction to the carillon came through listening to the 62-bell instrument housed in the Chimes Tower at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Scott also serves as an instructor for the North American Carillon School where he teaches music theory. In addition to carillon, Scott has written for various other mediums, including choir, pipe organ, and percussion. His involvement in the music industry extends beyond composition and performance to audio engineering and lighting design. Scott continues to compose and arrange new works for carillon. It is a religious custom in which people climb to remote sites to fast, pray and commune with nature. Individuals may pray to each of the four directions, seeking certain benefits from each. This four-movement original work illustrates a prayer by David Dillon, which he used on his own vision quest. The movements use recurring but evolving themes, reflecting each petition of the prayer. A myriad of percussion instruments enhance the mystical quality of the music. The movements are entitled: I. I pray to the West which gives us rest and reflection; II. I pray to the North which gives us patience and purity; III. I pray to the East which gives us energy and emotions; IV. I pray to the South which gives us discipline and direction. Caravan is one of Duke Ellington's (1899-1974) most famous compositions—although he didn't actually write it. That credit goes to Puerto Rican trombonist Juan Tizol (1900-1984), a member of the Ellington's big band from 1929 to 1944. Tizol composed the theme in 1936 and promptly sold the rights to lyricist Irving Mills for only $25. The song became an instant hit—jazz critic Ted Gioia expllains that it fit perfectly with the musical exoticism that patrons were demanding at [Ellington's] regular gig at the Cotton Club in Harlem. Indeed, much jazz from this era, especially Ellington's, was steeped in Orientalist aesthetics. Although we hear it now as a self-contained musical phenomenon, we must acknowledge this music's problematics even as we continue to celebrate its progressive and revolutionary qualities. Part of my interest in this piece is in its capacity as a vessel in which I can explore my own multiform identity as an expatriate of the Middle East, a carillonist, and a lover of jazz. This arrangement reflects what might happen when these three perspectives collide. Ellington recorded Caravan more than 100 times, and the names of its additional interpreters reads as a history of jazz itself: Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Nat King Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis and dozens more all brought their own spin to the tune. What makes it particularly special, though, is its appeal to listeners outside the jazz fandom. The 2014 film Whiplash introduced mass audiences to the song's unique atmosphere and to the genius of the Duke and his sidemen, thanks to an outstanding big band arrangement by John Wasson. My setting of the tune for the carillon recalls both Duke and Tizol's original version and this more recently popular edition.In this arrangement, I hope to highlight the carillon's capacity as a percussion instrument, and to use this as a bridge into the world of jazz. Maestro gives his seal of approval for these beginning handbell arrangements of three traditional worship hymns (Come, Christians, Join to Sing, Holy, Holy, Holy, and O Worship the King.) Created to insure quick success for new ringers, WORSHIP BELLS hymn trio does not include hymn melody or intricate rhythm patterns. Ringers play 'simple to count' chords for the most part. I use the color-coding method of highlighting the ringer's notes in the handbell chart and then highlighting with the same color the notes in the hymn. Each measure is numbered and if your ringer can count and follow the colors, he/she can ring! For those new to reading music, music instruction begins with identifying 1/4, 1/2, whole notes, dotted notes, repeat signs, and practicing specific rhythm patterns for each hymn. Identifying note names comes later. You'll have a great sounding handbell choir in no time, especially when you add in your piano/organ accompaniment of these hymns and a soloist, ensemble, or congregational singing! Seven pages total. The first page of the set gives more helpful information, so as Maestro would say, Go ring those bells!.
