When played with 12 ringers, the piece is rated at Level 5.Filled with interesting and contrasting rhythms and techniques, this arrangement is fun to play and thoroughly enjoyable to hear. Each range of the bells is featured in different ways at different times in the piece. The middle bells have a lot of rhythm and technique changes which are not very difficult and will keep the ringers smiling. The super bass bells sometimes play the part of the timpani or strong brass, and at other times have a counter melody all their own. The high bells may carry the melody (often doubled in octaves), but that same melody is often echoed in the other bell ranges as well just a beat or two later.The arranger recommends that ringers listen to an orchestral recording of this composition. It is arranged in the same key, and (if you can) could be rehearsed together.  If you have enough hands available, the arranger provides suggestions for an added triangle part.This arrangement is dedicated to Bay Bells, an advanced community handbell choir that the arranger Cheryl (Sutton) Baker (also known as Cheryl Woldseth) directed from 1986 to 1997. Under her leadership, Bay Bells and the subset Bay Bells Ensemble performed throughout California, Oregon, Nevada, and Hawaii, plus they toured Indonesia in 1996 and also performed at the 1996 International Handbell Symposium in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is Maestro’s favorite advent carol, for as he frequently recalls, I sang a solo in ‘Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus’ when I was in a renowned boy choir many years ago. I understand, from Maestro, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. I’ll reserve comment on that one! This one-octave piece has bells that range from G4 – F#5. For church, school, or civic organizations. Key of A, two pages, 1:22 minutes performance time at 90 bpm, but it can be taken faster or slower.Â

One of three popular Thanksgiving hymns, Now Thank We All Our God makes a great BEGINNING HANDBELL piece since the melody is primarily all quarter notes. My friend Maestro encourages directors to work on the steady rhythm at a slower metronome reading, around 60 bpm, and working up to 90 bpm. The fermatas should be held for two beats, and there's only one measure that contains any eighth notes. If your players can count, they've got this in a couple of rehearsals, just in time for a Thanksgiving service. There are only 8 bells needed, which means you could cover this piece with only four ringers, two bells apiece. Key of Ab with no key changes, two pages. Performance time: 1:09 minutes.

Published by C.E. Walz (A0.767636). The patriotic tune America (My country 'tis of thee...) is arranged here for a BEGINNING HANDBELL CHOIR. All notes fall within one octave:  G4 - F#5. Practice suggestion:  begin at a slow steady pace, around 60 bpm, and work up to 90 bpm. For school, church, or civic organizations. My friend Maestro had two suggestions for arranging handbells for beginners:  use a familiar melody with the lyrics included (this helps beginning musicians follow along) AND make sure all rhythms follow that melody (there are no extra passing tones to throw players off the beat). I always follow Maestro's musical advice. His fashion advice, not so much!  Key of A, two pages, 1:00 minute performance time.

Walz (A0.767673). This piece could utilize up to 12 members, but usually many members play two bells, so it could be a piece for six ringers. We Gather Together is one of my favorite hymns, and I'm sure Maestro would agree that it has a lovely melody. Key of D, two pages, no key changes. Performance time is 1: 25 if you take the repeat, shorter without it. PRACTICE HINT:Â The dotted quarter note in the melody may be unfamiliar to some beginning handbell ringers. Some clapping exercises with the melody might be helpful. In addition, the second layer (those notes with stems going down) does not play the dotted rhythm. It would be wise to have those ringers practice their smooth, consistent lines before pairing them with the more syncopated melody.

The arrangement is for 5, 6, 7, or 8 ringers using two octaves of handbells or handchimes. Assignments are included according to the quantity of ringers, and the piece is Level 2 when played with seven or eight ringers. This piece may also be performed by four- or six- in-hand ensembles without tables.Combining flowing lines with block chords, this arrangement of the familiar hymn tune is reminiscent of a music box. The melody is played both in the bass and the treble lines, and the easy rhythms never advance beyond the eighth note value. Every ringer is kept busy with lots of ringing, LV, some shakes, and minimal accidentals. The text of Of the Father's Love Begotten is an ancient Roman poem by Prudentius but the tune often used is the Plainsong Divinum myserium. This arrangement is for 12 bell ensemble by Mark R Lewis and even though there are several time signature changes, it is relatively simple. The changes in time signature are simply an artifact of the fact that old chants make the music follow the text and do not force the text to fit the music. In the accompanying video, we have added singing bell on C4 and G4 but this addition is optional for the performance. ​ Range: F5 - C7.

'When I Survey the Wondrous Cross' is an excellent choice for any time in the Christian Liturgical year, but is especially appropriate for Lent and Holy Week. This arrangement uses a basic 2 octave set of handbells, tone chimes, hand chimes or belle plates. Beginning simply and building to a triumphant finish, it is three and a half minutes of inspiring music! This piece uses 22 bells, and would work for a small intermediate ensemble (8 or 9 member group who can switch out bells during key changes) or would be an excellent piece for a larger beginning group, where the stately tempo can help build strong ringing skills. It has been published using large print, to facilitate reading in darkened spaces.This is a reproducible product. This piece may be purchased as a score for one performing group, and copies made for the members of that one performing group. Save money and space while allowing for more flexibility in annotating from year to year.
