Published by Timbila Music Co. (A0.938904). Also sprach Zarathustra (1896) (Thus Spoke Zarathustra) is a tone poem by Richard Strauss (1864-1949). This piece pays homage to the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. A tone poem is a piece of orchestral music, usually in a single continuous movement, which illustrates or evokes the content of a poem, short story, novel, painting, landscape, or other non-musical source. This tone poem exhibits the entitlements of man and nature by the use of contrasting and opposing tonalities (C Major and B Major). Although, the first movement is Straus’s most famous selection, this arrangement is from the lesser known second movement translated: Of Those at the Back of the World. This lullaby type song conjures a slow emotional music that rises and fall. Perhaps it could be a type of love story. The arranger is Brian Leverett. He has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education from Wayne State University and has now retired from teaching band in the Detroit Public Schools. He also have been an avid handbell choir member for twenty years.

The first carol was originally written as a poem by Christina Rossetti and published in 1872. It has been set to music several times, but the tune most associated with the text, Cranham, was composed in 1906 by Gustav Holst. The second carol is a French Canadian Christmas carol first written by a Jesuit missionary in 1642. This tune is also called the Huron Carol.This medley is written for 3-5 octave bell choir and goes back and forth between the two carols several times. Every time there is a key change, sometimes between related major and minor keys, and sometimes between two closely related keys. The melody is carried by the low, middle, and high ranges of the bells at some point in the piece and the accompanying voices are quite active throughout most of arrangement.In Bleak Midwinter's Moonlight is between the level 3 and level 4 range of difficulty. There are definitely passages that will require work and the multiple key changes require multiple handbell changes, but bell changes are never very abrupt and accidentals only happen in the transition passages. The most difficult part will probably be making sure the melody is always heard even when it is buried below active accompaniment. A few times the bass bells have quick passages that will require sharing of bells or a lot of practice.Season: ChristmasRange: 3-5 octaves.

The text of Of the Father's Love Begotten is an ancient Roman poem by Prudentius but the tune often used is the Plainsong Divinum myserium. This arrangement is for 12 bell ensemble by Mark R Lewis and even though there are several time signature changes, it is relatively simple. The changes in time signature are simply an artifact of the fact that old chants make the music follow the text and do not force the text to fit the music. In the accompanying video, we have added singing bell on C4 and G4 but this addition is optional for the performance. ​ Range: F5 - C7.

Hosanna, Loud Hosanna is a well-known Palm Sunday hymn that celebrates Jesus' special relationship with children and his triumphal entry into Jerusalem at the beginning of Holy Week. Jeanette Threlfall wrote the text as a devotional poem in the mid-1800s. ​The tune most associate with the text, Ellacombe, comes from songbook of the Württemberg ducal court and was harmonized by W. H. Monk in the mid-1800s as well. The name Ellacombe is thought to be in honor of Henry Thomas Ellacombe, a specialist in bell ringing and an Anglican clergyman. This version was arranged by Mark R Lewis for 12-Bell ensemble. While the melody line for this arrangement is quite straightforward, the accompaniment part can be very active. Despite this, the piece should be quite manageable by most intermediate bell ringers. In the provided video of the performance, the bell tree is simply doubling the melody line and while this is a nice touch, it is not required for a faithful performance of the arrangement. Range: F#5-C7.

This delightful arrangement of the first movement of The Spring is perfect for any energetic moment, regardless of season.  Its charm comes from its quick tempo and dynamic contrasts, complete with the sounds of the spring season (perhaps add a bird whistle, rainstick, props, poem, or a nature slide show). The arrangement is for 4, 5, or 6 ringers using two or three octaves of handbells (or handchimes).  Complete assignments and performance notes are enclosed, and the piece is Level 3 when played with six ringers.  This piece may also be performed by four- or six-in-hand ensembles without tables.The piece is in rondeau form, which means that it has a recurring theme (similar to a refrain) and verses that extremely differ from one another.  Rondeau form is usually explained by letters, where A equals the recurring theme, and each other letter like B or C indicate completely differing verses.  The form then looks like this: ABACADAE etcetera. Because of its consistency, both audience and performers alike will look forward to the next time that the A theme appears. Performance time:• 3 minutes.
