Mark R Lewis #942954. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1358497). In Bleak Midwinter's Moonlight is a medley of two Christmas carols, In the Bleak Midwinter and Twas in the Moon of Wintertime. The first carol was originally written as a poem by Christina Rossetti and published in 1872. It has been set to music several times, but the tune most associated with the text, Cranham, was composed in 1906 by Gustav Holst. The second carol is a French Canadian Christmas carol first written by a Jesuit missionary in 1642. This tune is also called the Huron Carol.This medley is written for 3-5 octave bell choir and goes back and forth between the two carols several times. Every time there is a key change, sometimes between related major and minor keys, and sometimes between two closely related keys. The melody is carried by the low, middle, and high ranges of the bells at some point in the piece and the accompanying voices are quite active throughout most of arrangement.In Bleak Midwinter's Moonlight is between the level 3 and level 4 range of difficulty. There are definitely passages that will require work and the multiple key changes require multiple handbell changes, but bell changes are never very abrupt and accidentals only happen in the transition passages. The most difficult part will probably be making sure the melody is always heard even when it is buried below active accompaniment. A few times the bass bells have quick passages that will require sharing of bells or a lot of practice.Season: ChristmasRange: 3-5 octaves.

I understand, from Maestro, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. I’ll reserve comment on that one! This one-octave piece has bells that range from G4 – F#5. For church, school, or civic organizations. Key of A, two pages, 1:22 minutes performance time at 90 bpm, but it can be taken faster or slower.Â

Caravan is one of Duke Ellington's (1899-1974) most famous compositions—although he didn't actually write it. That credit goes to Puerto Rican trombonist Juan Tizol (1900-1984), a member of the Ellington's big band from 1929 to 1944. Tizol composed the theme in 1936 and promptly sold the rights to lyricist Irving Mills for only $25. The song became an instant hit—jazz critic Ted Gioia expllains that it fit perfectly with the musical exoticism that patrons were demanding at [Ellington's] regular gig at the Cotton Club in Harlem. Indeed, much jazz from this era, especially Ellington's, was steeped in Orientalist aesthetics. Although we hear it now as a self-contained musical phenomenon, we must acknowledge this music's problematics even as we continue to celebrate its progressive and revolutionary qualities. Part of my interest in this piece is in its capacity as a vessel in which I can explore my own multiform identity as an expatriate of the Middle East, a carillonist, and a lover of jazz. This arrangement reflects what might happen when these three perspectives collide. Ellington recorded Caravan more than 100 times, and the names of its additional interpreters reads as a history of jazz itself: Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Nat King Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis and dozens more all brought their own spin to the tune. What makes it particularly special, though, is its appeal to listeners outside the jazz fandom. The 2014 film Whiplash introduced mass audiences to the song's unique atmosphere and to the genius of the Duke and his sidemen, thanks to an outstanding big band arrangement by John Wasson. My setting of the tune for the carillon recalls both Duke and Tizol's original version and this more recently popular edition.In this arrangement, I hope to highlight the carillon's capacity as a percussion instrument, and to use this as a bridge into the world of jazz. It is thought to date from some time in 1800s from near the city of Culmore, but not much else is known. The city of Culmore was a center for emigration and the lyrics of the song discuss a young man and the search for his love who had moved to America. This version is arranged for 12-bell ensemble by Mark R Lewis for the AGEHR 2022 Composing Masterclass. If played by a quintet or sextet, the piece is simply a matter of counting and keeping track of the melody but if this is played as a trio or quartet, the arrangement will be quite challenging with many instances of a player switching between melody and accompaniment parts multiple times a measure.

Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1144852). Beach Spring is an old American hymn-tune usually attributed to B. F. White, the co-editor of the music collection The Sacred Harp. Among the hymns that use this tune are Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service and Wash, O God, Our Sons and Daughters. The melody of the tune itself is pentatonic though many harmonizations end up disguising this. This particular arrangement by Mark Lewis actually embraces the pentatonic aspects of the melody and extends them throughout the harmony as well, causing the piece to require a 10 bell ensemble which is rather unusual and easiest to realize with five players. The time signature also is modified throughout the piece, starting in 8/4, moving through 7/4, and ending up in 6/4 which is basically the 3/2 time signature usually associated with the tune. By feeling the whole piece in variations of a Three Pattern the tempo marking of quarter-note = 200 is actually much more reasonable than it would first appear.

The waltz was written sometime between 1843 and 1848, but was not published until 1860, after the composer's death. The piece shows great sadness, while enclosing some episodes that hint at happiness and hope. The first theme of the piece uses a simple but effective melody, conveying a sad portrait, with decorative ornaments used throughout. The second theme is more interesting and lively, although it still has a certain sadness. About halfway through the piece, there is a modulation into A major, featuring a happy and joyful melody. The piece concludes with the main theme, followed by a short coda. The Level is Intermediate/Advanced Intermediate and the duration is approximately 2.40 minutes. It could be played in any type of recital/concert.

It is flowing and meditative, with colorful LV patterns and melody both in the bass and treble.The arrangement is for full bell choir using 3-6 octaves of handbells. Rated at a Level 2 when played with 11-12 ringers because of its slow tempo and easy rhythms, “A Stroll on ‘Duke Street’†can be interpreted very musically, with crescendos and spiritually high moments. Its three verses are each treated differently, with the last verse raises the key signature a half step and then yet another half step as it grows with intensity. Although based on a hymn tune, the title allows this arrangement to be used for any audience.For sacred environments, the arranger suggests that the text be studied for inspiration. There are several words set to the tune “Duke Street,†although the arranger favors the text that begins, “I know that my redeemer lives.†When performing the piece, use the first verse as a humble (and somewhat hesitant) prayer, the second verse more confident (by relying for God's promises), and the third verse as if obtaining divine reassurance. This would place the prayer-giver in a place of wonder – a spiritual mountain-top experience. This lively Sea Shanty Medley is a combination of two different sea shanties, Fish in the Sea from Scotland and Santiana from the Americas.Fish in the Sea is quite simple but has dozens of verses. It takes the form of a chorus that is identical every time and a verse that describes various fish. The idea being that everyone would sing the chorus and each individual sailor would basically ad-lib new lyrics when it was their turn to sing a verse.Santiana actually tells the story of the Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during the Mexican-American war in the 1840s. However, the various exploits described in the song have very little to do with historical reality. There are of course dozens of version of the song, each associated with different shipping lanes, and there are even a wide variety of shanties from other countries that seem to be adaptations of this tune with different stories.This arrangement by Mark Lewis is for 3 to 5 octave handbell choir and makes extensive use of both malleted and normal ringing techniques. There are some very quick transitions between the two techniques. The piece moves along at a pretty good clip with some portions in 6/8 and others in cut time with various duplet and triplet patterns to help with transitions, leading to a difficulty rating of 4+. While the piece should be playable by most intermediate groups, they will definitely need to put in enough practice time to perform it properly.Season: ConcertRange: 3-5 octaves.
