I discovered this ancient Greek hymn from the year 296 and was inspired to create music for it since there was none, and ended up adding original lyrics for a third verse along the way. This song features lilting, minor melodies in a Celtic style, with a flowing piano accompaniment for an altogether ethereal piece of music, perfect for special music during a church service or even congregational singing led by a small choir or lead singer. The main melody is kept very simple and singable to make it easy for a congregation to learn quickly and sing along right away, while the descant and piano part add deep richness and complexity to support the beauty of the lyrics. This is a good song for Trinity Sunday or any evensong or funeral service, as it references evening light and the sun descending, while praising the Father, Son, and Spirit. Originally titled “See How Brown Autumn Spreads the Fieldsâ€, this song is so rare that I couldn’t find any music for it online, and therefore wrote a new melody and accompaniment for it that captures the the solemnity and anguish of the lyrics. It’s one of the songs of harvest off of my album entitled “Hymns of Autumnâ€, but doesn’t talk about harvest in the traditional sense we normally sing about these days.Not many talk about the judgement of God in today’s church, and this hymn will send chills down the spine of the most devout believer as we realize the full spectrum of God's character, including His wrath and power on Judgement Day. I found this in an old hymnal that was so old that the “Sâ€s were still written as “Fâ€s, and I had to squint to read it while learning to sing for this recording. I hope this ancient and powerful hymn finds a place to minister to today's church and believers around the world, perhaps after a sermon on God’s judgement, or for a Lent or Advent service about repentance and turning to God, both individually and as a nation.This version is in B Minor to match the original recording, and includes the full piano accompaniment as played in the recording. Also available, by searching Stacey Plays Hymns and the song title on this site is a lead sheet version for those who prefer to play off a chart.For other formats including large print, or extended choral harmony versions, please write me at staceyplayshymns@gmail.com and I'll be glad to make them especially for you. If playing for a congregation you may wish to skip the repeated line at the end for a more traditional feel, but the flowing, rich piano chords will support any singing in a really lovely, tasteful way. A new Christmas carol by Philip Le Bas for unison voices (with occasional divisi) and piano, setting the words of William Blake's poem A Cradle Song from his collection entitled Songs of Innocence. The very title of Blake's poem calls out for it to be set to music. Indeed the poem is a straightforward lullaby for the first few stanzas, sung softly by a mother over her sleeping baby, as she marvels at the wonder of this beautiful infant and expresses her love for the child. Her own anxieties and weeping for the child remind her of the Christ-child who also wept as a vulnerable baby. But as God incarnate he wept for me, for thee, for all, and brought peace to heaven and earth. (Blake uses the word beguile perhaps to indicate the paradoxical nature of a weeping God bringing redemption to a suffering world by becoming a vulnerable human baby himself.) The composition aims to avoid unnecessary complexity in the vocal parts, so that it can be sung easily particularly by a parish choir. However, it also attempts to capture some of the beauty, drama and mystery of the scene expressed by Blake. The piece begins and ends in stillness, and there are gentle climaxes here and there, reflecting some of the rise and fall of the poem's lyrics.
