This morning your being wokeIn knowledge of your heart’s lossAs the night had no dreamsBut only a thousand falling stars.Then the richness of a busy daySeemed to you the work of evil witches.– Guðfinna Jónsdóttir from Hömrum (1899–1946)This quote, taken from the poem “The Golden Momentâ€, showcases some of Guðfinna’s writing’s distinct qualities: Profound sadness with a layer of beauty, and a juxtaposition of the mundane and the colloquial with grand imagery and the supernatural. Throughout her poetry we see these strong contrasts: A once-upon-a-lifetime moment that passes you by, but also the infinite beauty of a new-born baby. The wild Icelandic nature presented metaphorically like a protective Viking ship, but also great evil hiding under a sweet, romantic exterior. The life-long journey to a place of great beauty that was always inside you, yet also man’s desperate and futile attempts to bend a great mountain to their will. Her colourful and imaginative writing evokes the dramatic landscapes of her homeland in careful detail, as we’re presented with situations that carry both the great beauty and danger that the volcanic island holds.Guðfinna lived most of her life in Northern Iceland, working as a church musician and writing beautiful texts that unfortunately never made it outside of her native country during her lifetime. We get some small hints about her personal life through her poetry, such as the tragic and early death of her sister Hulda, who died from tuberculosis shortly after getting engaged. Helga Ragnars, being from the same town as Guðfinna and already familiar with her poetry, introduced Knut Rygnestad to it in 2019, after he expressed interest in writing settings of little-known poetry by women. The first two she sent were “Hið gullna augnablik†and “Tvær systurâ€, and Knut found these a joy to work with and quickly requested more, eventually leading to nine songs in total. Each of the three movements showcases the range, control and expression of all three performers. The first is a somber lament featuring lush chords and soft high A for the soprano soloist. The second is a fast and frenetic, high-energy presto in compound meter with a forte high B. The final piece is an emotive, stirring and heart-rending anthem taking the soloist to a high C at the soaring climax. The cycle ends as it began. A challenge for exemplary musicians. Contains full score, piano/vocal part and cello part.

California Rose is a playful portrait of one of my favorite flowers. A group of pine trees created a Wooded Dell, a song exploring the timelessness of romance. An Asian lantern inspired Garden Teahouse, a story told through Haiku. February 2021 links the hope of the early California springtime with the poignant optimism inspired by the availability of the first COVID vaccines.

To Get a Ration (9:00) - vocal soloists & piano or chamber ensemble (cl, bn, tpt, tbn, perc, vln, vc) with live or prerecorded crowd noise - 2021, 2024. The libretto is comprised of the insightful observations of a young Jewish boy—Abraham “Abramek” Koplowicz—who was trapped by the Nazis in the Lodz ghetto and who later died in Auschwitz. The libretto appears before each scene in the scores.This may be a relatively brief piece, but it is a major one for me and posthumously for the author. I am fortunate to be the only person given blanket gratis permission to set the words of Abraham Koplowicz to music. He composed a book of poetry, plays, and artwork while imprisoned in the Lodz Ghetto before perishing later in Auschwitz before he could become a Bar Mitzvah. The contents of that book are quite good, sophisticated for his age. Abraham's late half-brother, Eliezer Grynfeld—who found the book in the 1990s—and I eventually became good friends. The Pope once kissed Eliezer's hand. That is how highly regarded this collection is and, by some stroke of luck or fate, I have got exclusive musical rights to the book until it enters the public domain. In my settings of AT THE CLOTHING DEPARTMENT and TO GET A RATION, I combine the musical language of Schoenberg's A SURVIVOR FROM WARSAW very nearly with the instrumentation of Stravinsky's A SOLDIER'S TALE - only the percussion instruments differ. The musical language of these brief opera scenes is appropriately terse, very much in keeping with the oppressiveness of imprisonment. Please have a look and a listen. She wrote beautiful poems about her life, filled with with tragedies, death and unrequited love. In her own time her work wasn't well known outside of her hometown, and today she is more or less forgotten.In collaboration with the singer Helga Ragnarsdóttir, the composer Knut Rygnestad has set several of her poems to music for voice and piano, with the aim of making them better known in Iceland and throughout the world. The project received funding from the Norwegian Arts Council and Hljóðritasjóður RannÃs, and an album of nine recorded songs, Ótal stjarna hröp, was released in 2023.
