Published by Maria Thompson Corley (A0.846529). The title alludes to the classic Joni Mitchell song, however, this is a piece of classical music. The poem refers to the burning of Notre Dame, then the inevitable physical decline inherent in aging, then the unexpected crumbling of our democratic institutions. The original melodic material echoes the fragments taken from the two masters of the Notre Dame school of organum, however, the dissonant, challenging piano accompaniment deconstructs them. The middle section is wistful and less dissonant, followed by a return to the earlier musical material. The piece ends with the quote from Perotin with which it begins, the vowel O, however, at the end it is a moan of regret. Words and music by Maria Thompson Corley, incorporating Leonin's Haec Dies and Perotin's Beata Viscera.

This morning your being wokeIn knowledge of your heart’s lossAs the night had no dreamsBut only a thousand falling stars.Then the richness of a busy daySeemed to you the work of evil witches.– Guðfinna Jónsdóttir from Hömrum (1899–1946)This quote, taken from the poem “The Golden Momentâ€, showcases some of Guðfinna’s writing’s distinct qualities: Profound sadness with a layer of beauty, and a juxtaposition of the mundane and the colloquial with grand imagery and the supernatural. Throughout her poetry we see these strong contrasts: A once-upon-a-lifetime moment that passes you by, but also the infinite beauty of a new-born baby. The wild Icelandic nature presented metaphorically like a protective Viking ship, but also great evil hiding under a sweet, romantic exterior. The life-long journey to a place of great beauty that was always inside you, yet also man’s desperate and futile attempts to bend a great mountain to their will. Her colourful and imaginative writing evokes the dramatic landscapes of her homeland in careful detail, as we’re presented with situations that carry both the great beauty and danger that the volcanic island holds.Guðfinna lived most of her life in Northern Iceland, working as a church musician and writing beautiful texts that unfortunately never made it outside of her native country during her lifetime. We get some small hints about her personal life through her poetry, such as the tragic and early death of her sister Hulda, who died from tuberculosis shortly after getting engaged. Helga Ragnars, being from the same town as Guðfinna and already familiar with her poetry, introduced Knut Rygnestad to it in 2019, after he expressed interest in writing settings of little-known poetry by women. The first two she sent were “Hið gullna augnablik†and “Tvær systurâ€, and Knut found these a joy to work with and quickly requested more, eventually leading to nine songs in total. In looking for texts which expressed something of the love and admiration I have for my dear lady, I found some beautiful poems by the late Australian poet, John Shaw Neilson. French.These songs by Emile Naoumoff are squarely in the tradition of French lied composition such as by Gabriel Fauré. Here, Naoumoff chose texts by late 19th-century French lyricists: Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Emile Verhaeren, Charles Baudelaire and René-François Sully-Prudhomme. In their elegance and suppleness, the four songs sound typically French. As they are all easy to sing and have not been composed 'against' the voice, they are perfectly suited for both music lessons and concert programmes. Naoumoff was born in Sofia in 1962. At the age of eight, he began his career as a pianist and composer; he was a student of Nadia Boulanger for ten years until her death. At the age of ten, Naoumoff composed and performed his own piano concerto under the direction of Yehudi Menuhin. He then received numerous awards and prizes and gave performances as highly acclaimed pianist. Today, Naoumoff lives and works as an associate professor at the School of Music of the Indiana University at Bloomington. He gives master classes in the USA, Europe and Japan and is director of a music academy.

This extended through-sung song cycle was composed at the request of the remarkable Turkish-Australian soprano, Ayse Goknur Shanal, to include in a 2015 recital program by her to commemorate the 100th anniversary of origin of ANZAC, being the date Australian & New Zealand armed forces entered into combat in WW1.  The date is focused annually to commemorate those Australians who have served & those who have died in war.For the words I located some striking, even emotional, poems by Leon Gellert who, as a poet & a Lance Sergeant with the 10th Battalion, landed at Gallipoli, Turkey, on 25 April 1915. Wounded by shrapnel, and suffering from septicaemia and dysentery, he was evacuated to Malta in July and thence to London. He was repatriated and discharged medically unfit on 30 June 1916.Gellert created his overseas verse. Songs of a Campaign (1917) which was hailed by the Bulletin as one of the best verse collections to have come out of the war in the English language; it won the Bundey prize for English verse, and, before the year was out, Angus & Robertson Ltd published a third and enlarged edition, illustrated by Norman Lindsay.Ms Shanal premiered These Men in the recital collection curated by her in April 2015.  In 2016 she recorded the complete program to CD. In 2018 & 2019 she gave performances of the program in the Melbourne Recital Centre, Sydney Opera House & other venues throughout eastern Australia & Germany.
