This charming, thought-provoking chamber opera is set during the Second World War, and tells the story of Stanislaw Hempel, a Polish chemist and revolutionary socialist, who came to Scotland in 1943 attached to the Polish Armed Forces in the West. The opera was commissioned by the University of Edinburgh School of Chemistry to celebrate its Tercentenary year in 2013. The other characters in the opera are Chrissie Miller (a trailblazer for gender equality in the sciences) and James Kendall (an expert in chemical warfare). The libretto is comprised of the insightful observations of a young Jewish boy—Abraham “Abramek” Koplowicz—who was trapped by the Nazis in the Lodz ghetto and who later died in Auschwitz. The libretto appears before each scene in the scores.This may be a relatively brief piece, but it is a major one for me and posthumously for the author. I am fortunate to be the only person given blanket gratis permission to set the words of Abraham Koplowicz to music. He composed a book of poetry, plays, and artwork while imprisoned in the Lodz Ghetto before perishing later in Auschwitz before he could become a Bar Mitzvah. The contents of that book are quite good, sophisticated for his age. Abraham's late half-brother, Eliezer Grynfeld—who found the book in the 1990s—and I eventually became good friends. The Pope once kissed Eliezer's hand. That is how highly regarded this collection is and, by some stroke of luck or fate, I have got exclusive musical rights to the book until it enters the public domain. In my settings of AT THE CLOTHING DEPARTMENT and TO GET A RATION, I combine the musical language of Schoenberg's A SURVIVOR FROM WARSAW very nearly with the instrumentation of Stravinsky's A SOLDIER'S TALE - only the percussion instruments differ. The musical language of these brief opera scenes is appropriately terse, very much in keeping with the oppressiveness of imprisonment. Please have a look and a listen. Esta obra es claro reflejo de las corrientes artísticas que impactaban a los escritores, músicos e intelectuales de la República Dominicana a principios del siglo pasado. Por un lado, encontraremos la lírica característica del modernismo latinoamericano impregnado en cada letra del libreto. Desde el nombre de la obra nos hace referencia al símbolo más claro de este movimiento, el «azul» coloreado por el gran Darío que dejaría entintado todo el continente. Dentro de la temática y el lenguaje se busca decididamente la refinación aristocrática mediante la creación de imágenes cargadas de flores, adornos, joyas y delicadeza. Por otra parte, en la música, encontraremos a un compositor consumado dominando de manera holgada el estilo de la zarzuela, la cuál desde los primeros años del siglo XX, había realizado su entrada en la palestra cultural dominicana a través de las diferentes compañías que llegaban principalmente de Italia, España y Estados Unidos.1 Si bien esta obra está escrita originalmente para orquesta, las partes de dicho arreglo se encuentran en parte extraviada. Lo que se presenta aquí es el score vocal conservado, el cuál contiene las diferentes voces utilizadas en las canciones, y una reducción para piano de la música. Así mismo, debido a la vinculación de esta obra al municipio de San Pedro de Macorís, hemos decidido, a través de la visión creativa de la ilustradora Ana Gerardino, visualizar el escenario de «La Góndola Azul» dentro de una imaginación simbólica de las costas de esta localidad.

From about sixty songs for voice and piano, to almost twenty adding a cello, to several (though small) choral works. This edition kickstarts the unearthing of these unfairly forgotten gems, with the Canto Piatti wrote using the Exercise n° 7 from Duport’s Essai. This most famous etude, which every cellist will know by heart, provides the base over which the text by poet and librettist Felice Romani is shaped into a dramatic musical line.Also included is a rich preface with a thorough analysis of how Piatti interwove text and music together. The original text of Romani’s poem is included as well. The full score is accompanied by a cello part and a solo vocal part, as it was customary at the time.

There are a wide range of characters represented and various musical styles. The first is from High Fidelity which has been adapted from Anton Chekhov’s The Bear and George Bernard Shaw’s How He Lied to Her Husband. There are also references to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Cosà fan tutte later in the score. In this opening scene, Aurora Wentworth is practicing the mourning she believes society expects of her while her cousin, Georgina, from Milwaukee arrives to spice up the summer morning.The second scene from Dorabella’s Daughters finds Anabella trapped in a woodsman’s cottage the day after her wedding. The opera opens at the wedding reception for her stepsister Cinderella where Annabella is particularly spiteful. In a fury, she marries the next man who walks in the room — as it happens,  a woodsman — or so she thinks. In this scene she is mourning her fate. Her younger sister, Brendella comes to visit and the two are joined later by their very happy stepsister, Cinderella.The third scene from The Passion of John presents three women with their own perspectives on Jesus in this stylized presentation of the Gospel of John. The first singer offers the perspective of the gospel, the second presents a firsthand narrative of the Samaritan woman and the third is the woman who was accused of adultery. All three are accompanied by a women’s choral ensemble, flute, classical guitar and cello.The final scene in this collection comes from The Proposal. The opera is composed as two loosely joined acts where the first is sung by four women and the second by three men. The action concerns the aftermath of a proposal of marriage where the woman, Eve, asks for time to consider. The unexpected response sends Sam into a bit of a tailspin. In this scene, from the end of the first act Eve is arguing with three versions of herself in the middle of the night: the romantic, the maternal and the one focused on career. The scene opens right after Eve-Romantic has just waxed poetic about the perfect fairytale romance.
