It appeared a year later in the film ‘Moulin Rouge’. Tony Bennet revived this song, making it a signature song, with his debut single in 1950; and subsequently recorded it 3 more times. It has earned its place in The Great American Songbook. This arrangement is an homage to “Boulevard’s†diversity: it can be a sad ballad, it can be a Bennet/Sting duet, it can be a Tango, it can be typically-French, it can be a soundtrack… mostly it is just a great piece of music. The voice is lyrical and theatrical, with spoken words andhumming, as well as singing. The accompaniment implicates solidity, predictability,strength of the nature of God; but also wonderment, freedom and being light-hearted.The composer chose to title this song using a line in the poem, rather than the mostused title — which begins the cycle of key elements of the poem used to title andcomprise songs 2 and 3 — thereby placing importance as Cummings recited.2. of life and of love and wings, is more lyrical and lighter in nature than song #1. A new Christmas carol by Philip Le Bas for unison voices (with occasional divisi) and piano, setting the words of William Blake's poem A Cradle Song from his collection entitled Songs of Innocence. The very title of Blake's poem calls out for it to be set to music. Indeed the poem is a straightforward lullaby for the first few stanzas, sung softly by a mother over her sleeping baby, as she marvels at the wonder of this beautiful infant and expresses her love for the child. Her own anxieties and weeping for the child remind her of the Christ-child who also wept as a vulnerable baby. But as God incarnate he wept for me, for thee, for all, and brought peace to heaven and earth. (Blake uses the word beguile perhaps to indicate the paradoxical nature of a weeping God bringing redemption to a suffering world by becoming a vulnerable human baby himself.) The composition aims to avoid unnecessary complexity in the vocal parts, so that it can be sung easily particularly by a parish choir. However, it also attempts to capture some of the beauty, drama and mystery of the scene expressed by Blake. The piece begins and ends in stillness, and there are gentle climaxes here and there, reflecting some of the rise and fall of the poem's lyrics. This morning your being wokeIn knowledge of your heart’s lossAs the night had no dreamsBut only a thousand falling stars.Then the richness of a busy daySeemed to you the work of evil witches.– Guðfinna Jónsdóttir from Hömrum (1899–1946)This quote, taken from the poem “The Golden Momentâ€, showcases some of Guðfinna’s writing’s distinct qualities: Profound sadness with a layer of beauty, and a juxtaposition of the mundane and the colloquial with grand imagery and the supernatural. Throughout her poetry we see these strong contrasts: A once-upon-a-lifetime moment that passes you by, but also the infinite beauty of a new-born baby. The wild Icelandic nature presented metaphorically like a protective Viking ship, but also great evil hiding under a sweet, romantic exterior. The life-long journey to a place of great beauty that was always inside you, yet also man’s desperate and futile attempts to bend a great mountain to their will. Her colourful and imaginative writing evokes the dramatic landscapes of her homeland in careful detail, as we’re presented with situations that carry both the great beauty and danger that the volcanic island holds.Guðfinna lived most of her life in Northern Iceland, working as a church musician and writing beautiful texts that unfortunately never made it outside of her native country during her lifetime. We get some small hints about her personal life through her poetry, such as the tragic and early death of her sister Hulda, who died from tuberculosis shortly after getting engaged. Helga Ragnars, being from the same town as Guðfinna and already familiar with her poetry, introduced Knut Rygnestad to it in 2019, after he expressed interest in writing settings of little-known poetry by women. The first two she sent were “Hið gullna augnablik†and “Tvær systurâ€, and Knut found these a joy to work with and quickly requested more, eventually leading to nine songs in total. With funding from Hljóðritasjóður RannÃs and the Norwegian Arts Council, they were able to record and release these songs in 2023, and hope that this will help to make Guðfinna’s poetry reach a wider audience.This book contains sheet music for nine songs: Hið gullna augnablik Vöggubarnsins maÌl AÌfangastaður Tvær systur LjoÌssins knörr Hver ert þuÌ Mannsbarn Fjallið blaÌtt Mig dreymir enn
