Alan Bullard's song 'The Solitary Reaper' is printed here in four separate versions, for high voice and piano, or violin, or oboe, or treble recorder/flute. Originally written for soprano and violin, this setting of Wordsworth’s well-known poem has since been performed in three other versions. The lyrical portrayal of a maiden working in the fields, singing 'as if her song could have no ending' inspired the composer to write a delicately flowing setting of the words supported by a 'never-ending' instrumental ostinato. ‘The revelation, when listening to this admirable CD, was the music of Alan Bullard. To celebrate this milestone I decided to set a poem by the great British Jesuit poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins. In my search for a text I came upon his monumental work, The Wreck of the Deutschland. The poem is in two parts. Part The First deals with faith and God. Part The Second concerns the five Franciscan nuns who perished in the sinking of the ship. I decided to set Part The First only, for soprano and piano. There are ten stanzas. Each stanza has its own musical texture and mood. 1. THOU mastering me God! 2. I did say yes 3. Unfortunately he did not, but in the process of my research I stumbled upon Cesare Pavese, 1908-1950. To know a bit more about this person, I contacted my Italian colleague, Giorgio Rimondi, who is a professor in Ferrara, Italy. Giorgio gave me a nice summary of Pavese's life and work. So I went on Amazon and bought a bilingual book of his poems: Disaffections. The poems that intrigued me the most were the ones he wrote for his paramour, the American model and actress, Constance Dowling. The last poem he wrote before he committed suicide at the age of 41 was dedicated to her: Death will come and will have your eyes. I chose that poem as the anchor of a set of eight poems for the song cycle. 1. Ancora tu sei l'amore 2. To C. from C.*** 3. In the morning you always come back 4. Verrà la morta e avrà i tuoi occhi 5. Passerò per Piazza di Spagna 6. The night you slept 7. I gatti lo sapranno 8. Last blues, to be read some day*** NB: Two of the poems with *** are originally in English. I thought an English setting within a song cycle that is Italian would be a bit jarring. So I asked my friend Giorgio if he could make me an Italian version of the poems. He instead informed me that Italo Calvino had already made a literal translation of those two English poems. Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826) was a man of many things: lawyer, judge, Mayor of Belley, author and professional violinist. He is most famous for his book, Physiologie du goût (The Physiology of Taste). According to Wikipedia, it is a book of his culinary reminiscences and reflections on the craft and science of cookery and the art of eating. Incidentally, the cheese Brillat-Savarin is named after him. I am a foodie and I have written quite a few works whose subjects are food related. My magnum food opus is Apicus de re Coquinaria (2023). Debussy's Trois Chansons de Bilitis was one of the works we studied in a seminar taught by Professor Earl Kim when I was a graduate student at Harvard University, 1977 to 1981. I then recently discovered that Debussy took twelve of the 158 poems from Pierre Louÿs' Les Chansons de Bilitis and wrote Musique de scéne pour les chansons de bilitis.' The texts in this version is not sung but recited by a narrator accompanied by two flutes, two harps and celesta. The poem A Birthday begins with the most delightful set of words, My heart is a like a singing bird ... Looking for something to set for my next song cycle I rediscovered Christina via his brother, the poet and painter, Dante Gabriel Rossetti. IMHO, he is much more brilliant as a painter, and his sister is the true genius poet!!! Christina's father emigrated to England from Italy in 1824. Consequently, all four children (Maria, Dante, William and Christina) spoke Italian at home when they were young. To my delight many of Christina's early poems are in Italian. There must be some cosmological link between us because he has always intrigued me - philosophically and musically. Recently I was in my colleague Prof. Jeremiah McGrann's office waiting for him to join me for a martini lunch after a day of teaching. I noticed on his desk a hardcover copy of John Cage I-VI. I asked what it was and he said it is John Cage's Charles Elliot Norton Lecture he gave at Harvard University in 1988-89. I looked inside and there were these mesostics. Very sparsely distributed on each page, and it looked fascinating, like some hieroglyphic art. I was immediately intrigued by it and thought right on the spot that I should buy a copy and maybe create a song cycle from the texts. Upon further research, I found out that John Cage compiled the content for his lecture using excerpts from works by Thoreau, Emerson, Wittgenstein, McLuhan, Buckminster Fuller, plus passages from The Wall Street Journal, The Christian Science Monitor and The New York Times. He then created the final text for his lecture by using chance operations with the assistance of a computer program that he created. And so I did the unthinkable, create a song cycle of words that has no meaning nor narrative in the traditional sense. Quoting John Cage: I have nothing to say, I am saying it, and that is poetry. John Cage I-VI (2023) is in six movements, scored for soprano and piano.

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.1261426). I first came upon Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem translated into Italian by Roberto Ascoli in a chamber work by Ottorino Respighi entitled Il Tramonto. I was so taken by this work for mezzo-soprano and string quartet that I did my own version of the Shelley-Ascoli text for soprano and piano, also called Il Tramonto. In the meanwhile, I found at an antique bookstore online a first edition copy of Poesie di P. B. Shelley (Milano Fratelli Treves, Editori, 1905) with more translations into Italian by Roberto Ascoli. The Italian versions are so much more beautiful than the English that I was compelled to create another song cycle of some of these poems in Italian for soprano and piano. I. Canto II. Versi III. So I picked up his Collected Poems in English and French and there I discovered several lovely poems by Paul Éluard, 1895-1952. This led me down the rabbit hole of seeking out Éluard's poems, and there are tons of it.I was especially intrigued by the collection called Mourir de ne pas mourir - Dying of not dying!!!
