I wrote this song to describe my feelings about the atonement of Jesus Christ. It's a conversation with the Savior about His role in my life and my desire to follow Him. It was greatly inspired by the October 2012 General Conference address The First Great Commandment by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland. Elder Holland states: My beloved brothers and sisters, I am not certain just what our experience will be on Judgment Day, but I will be very surprised if, at some point in that conversation, God does not ask us exactly what Christ asked Peter: 'Did you love me?' I think He will want to know if in our very mortal, very inadequate, and sometimes childish grasp of things, did we at least understand one commandment, the first and greatest commandment of them all—'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind' (Luke 10:27; see also Matthew 22:37–38). And if at such a moment we can stammer out, 'Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee,' then He may remind us that the crowning characteristic of love is always loyalty. My brother died suddenly in 2011 at the age of 42. He left all of us behind including his daughters, my nieces, when they were ages six years and six months. My father and mother died a short time later, within months of each other in 2013 and 2014. Finally, in 2017 my 27-year-old nephew died of a drug overdose. This intense period of loss brought and continues to bring about many feelings of regret in addition to so much more. When my nephew died, my son Jonah, developed an intense anxiety about losing us, his parents. I felt compelled to express my feelings, the fear of my own mortality, the anxiety of leaving behind loved ones, combined with words said and unsaid to those lost. “Love letters†is my gift to the six young people I care most about. Â I have created an arrangement with 4 variations with each variation getting further from the original theme and each progressing further into jazz. Â Variation I - I utilize rich chords of the ballads of that period while keeping the sung melody close to the original. Â Variation II - I rhythmically augment the melody, simplify the texture, and add chromatic passing tones and progressions. Â Variation III - I set this in stride jazz with syncopated riffing in the melody. Â Variation IV - I make this one a slower, bolder jazz with various triplet patterns on fragments of melody and a strong jazz chord progression based on fifths. Â This is a gentle jazzy update to the most popular wedding song of all time; perfect for any wedding today, whether vintage or modern. Â Variation III - I set this in stride jazz with syncopated riffing in the melody. Â Variation IV - I make this one a slower, bolder jazz with various triplet patterns on fragments of melody and a strong jazz chord progression based on fifths. Â This is a gentle jazzy update to the most popular wedding song of all time; perfect for any wedding today, whether vintage or modern. The voices told me that they loved me, but wouldn't wait for me if I went on a mission. All of those voices were demeaning of me if I went on a mission. They also promised me joy, but only if I decided not to go on a mission. I ultimately decided to go on a mission. By going on a mission I was put in a situation where I could testify of God's gospel truths. Those people hearing the truths had the opportunity to pray to God to find out for themselves if what they had been taught was true. Those people that talked to God in prayer joined the church. Why? Because God answered their prayers. Some of those new members went on missions to other lands converting through the spirit of the Holy Ghost others, who in turn went on missions to other lands. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1218745). The Hand of You is an arrangement of the 1920 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond. Â The lyrics are a tender love story about how throughout our relationship everything is fine as long as I can touch the hand of you. Â In order to emphasize this simple and powerful emotion, for the first verse I simplified the original ballad's thick chords into a more shaped and expressive two part writing, just single notes in each hand; then for the second verse I did a reharmonization of the melody, adding some simple harmony and octaves for the climax; then back to two part for a slower, softer ending. Â I also wrote a new slow introductory section with my own lyrics and melody that is based on what follows. Â An incredibly beautiful piece, this is perfect for any wedding today, whether vintage or modern. Â 4 page score; 2:15 minutesI have published it in 3 different vocal ranges on this site: Â High - low E to high F; Medium - middle C to high D; Low - low A to high B.
