Published by Ian Calvert (A0.1298966). This is the first publication of a new Christmas song, set for voice and piano. The words are those of a poem by Leonard Clark (1905 – 1981). He was an English poet who was raised in The Forest of Dean, in the west of England. In 1972 he published a slim little book of Christmas poems, of which ‘The Birth’ is one. What I like about this poem is its simplicity and clarity – and its narrative development through the verses. It starts with the poet waking in the pre-dawn. He then realizes that it is Christmas Day and in the stillness of that time his mind turns to the birth of Jesus, as traditionally told. Then he steps out of time and space and looks through his bedroom window to contemplate the mystery of incarnation. And he finishes at the stable, offering devotion to the newborn Lord. This song is also available in a version for SATB a cappella. Drawn from the same book of poems there is available another new Christmas song, called Singing in the Streets; that one is set for baritone and piano. Ian Calvert.

Some are original and some are from the public domain that have added instruments, harmonies, piano accompaniments and in some cases different lyrics or melodies. There are optional instruments on all songs but one - parts are included in the download. The piano pieces are fairly simple so the other instrument and harmony can show the movement. All pieces have guitar chords on top of the pieces. The song list is - Emmanuel, Please Come to Us, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Angels We Have Heard on High, Away in a Manger, It was a Silent Night, O Holy Night, I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day, The First Noel, In the Stillness of the Night and We Three Kings. A new Christmas carol by Philip Le Bas for unison voices (with occasional divisi) and piano, setting the words of William Blake's poem A Cradle Song from his collection entitled Songs of Innocence. The very title of Blake's poem calls out for it to be set to music. Indeed the poem is a straightforward lullaby for the first few stanzas, sung softly by a mother over her sleeping baby, as she marvels at the wonder of this beautiful infant and expresses her love for the child. Her own anxieties and weeping for the child remind her of the Christ-child who also wept as a vulnerable baby. But as God incarnate he wept for me, for thee, for all, and brought peace to heaven and earth. (Blake uses the word beguile perhaps to indicate the paradoxical nature of a weeping God bringing redemption to a suffering world by becoming a vulnerable human baby himself.) The composition aims to avoid unnecessary complexity in the vocal parts, so that it can be sung easily particularly by a parish choir. However, it also attempts to capture some of the beauty, drama and mystery of the scene expressed by Blake. The piece begins and ends in stillness, and there are gentle climaxes here and there, reflecting some of the rise and fall of the poem's lyrics.
