This was done in order to allow the singer to ask questions to a loved one who seems to fail in the return of the love offered by the singer. Yes, it is a song of unrequited love but with a double meaning. It can be understood as a lover trying to encourage the loved one to believe not only in oneself but also to trust in the love the lover has offered. In like manner, it may also be understood as Our Blessed Lord Jesus asking the loved one to trust in Him for true meaning in life. If life is seen as a card game then only God should be your dealer. Somewhere in my mind I felt influenced by Mozart thinking that if he were alive today he might write a pop song with similar chord changes. This song was published in 1929 and was included in the musical revue Murray Anderson's Almanac which ran for 69 performances at Erlanger's Theatre on Broadway in 1929. It is said that the song was written on-demand for John Murray Anders. 'Of His Holiness' would be best played with solo piano and maybe a synthesizer in the background. Obviously one good have drums, bass and other instrumentation but I think the feel of the song would best come across with solo piano. The lyric are directly taken from scripture; namely Psalm 96 KJV. The lyrics don't follow the order of the psalm verses and is effectively jumps around the psalm. This arrangement, in the key of E-flat major, matches the key sung by Blake Shelton as he covered this track on his album, Cheers It's Christmas (Deluxe Edition). The piano accompaniment is accessible, but musically presented and incorporates elements of the original production. A similar arrangement is also available from this publisher in the key of A Major, which is faithful to Gwen Stefani's original recording on her own album. Gwen has mentioned in several interviews that she came up with the inspiration for this song, almost in totality, during a run on Blake Shelton's ranch. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2017, she remarked, When I think of the holiday season, I'm always going to think of this song, because this is a song that I wrote when I was on Blake Shelton's ranch, Stefani explains. This arrangement is in the original key from their first album The Chicago Transit Authority. The trombone and trumpet solos are written in the piano part.
